Work Text:
Rook was laid down on his couch-bed, curled up like a cat would be. He drifted between sleep and consciousness, barely catching the sound of the door to his room opening.
"Rook?" As soon as he heard Lucanis's voice, he sprang up.
"Oh, Lucanis! Hey, just uh, taking a nap."
"For two days?" Lucanis teased with a smirk on his face, but there was an undertone of concern.
Rooks face fell, letting out a quiet sigh as he turned away to face forwards.
"I was just.... Waiting for everyone to be.. ready, to take on the next elven god."
Lucanis seemed disappointed at his response, not saying anything until he walked over and sat next to him on the couch, facing the wall.
"Rook.... Everyone else is ready to fight, they all told you they were. They were getting worried.."
Lucanis turned his head to look over at rook but he turned away. Lucanis frowned.
"Rook?"
He tensed, rook grabbed his own arm, digging his nails into his skin.
"What's wrong, rook?" Lucanis put a hand over Rooks, intertwining fingers so rook couldn't hurt himself that way.
Rook glanced over to Lucanis, a pain in his eyes. He quickly looked to the wall instead.
"Please speak to me, id like to hear your voice at least." With his free hand, Lucanis brushed a piece of hair out of Rooks face.
He let his head hang. "I'm sorry you have to deal with me." His voice was quiet, barely a whisper.
Lucanis felt a pain in his heart from his words. He took both of Rooks hands in his and held them in-between each other, pulling him close.
"To me it is nothing, I'd spend an entire year with you going through your emotions if it meant you felt better and we'd come out on the other side, together."
Rook smiled warmly, finally holding Lucanis's gaze. "I don't deserve you."
"Don't say that like you're lesser than me, you're Rook! Without you none of us would be here, without you the world would have fallen apart."
Rooks face fell again, looking, hurt. He looked away, down towards the ground.
Lucanis removed one of his hands from rooks to reach up to his face, gently holding the side of Rooks face.
"What's on your mind?"
Rook froze, staying still for a long beat before speaking up.
"...." He sighed quickly. "Varric."
Lucanis's expression turned empathetic, quickly understanding. "I'm truly sorry for your loss, he truly seemed like a good guy, I wish I got to meet--"
"Don't!" Rook cut him off. "Don't... Say you wish you got to meet him. You... I..." Rook groaned and buried his face in his hands. He took a breath, but it wasnt enough, so he stayed like the a little longer, until he could compose himself. He eventually let out a breath, removing his hands and looking to Lucanis.
"I'm fine, we just have to get through this final battle, and we will."
"Rook..." He looked concerned for him.
"I'll gather the others." Rook got up off his couch, turning towards the door swiftly, but stopped by a familiar hand sliding over his wrist.
"It's okay, Rook. You don't have to do this, you can--"
"No! We don't have time, Lucanis, we have to-"
"Rook! Please listen to me."
Those words, maybe simple but they got him to shut up and just look at Lucanis.
"You can do this, we all know you can, but that's not the point. You're strong but your pain still matters, If I could bring back Varric, I would. For you. I know how much he meant to you. This whole situation has taken a huge toll on you, just, come back to the couch, and we can work through it, okay?"
Lucanis's gentle tone chipped at the walls Rook crafted around his heart, the love and care from another that usually would make Rook roll his eyes, think their words were useless, they for once had an affect.
Rook silently walked towards the couch, Lucanis who still had his hand on Rook's wrist, slowly slid it down to intertwine their hands together. A smile slowly appeared onto Rooks face. They sat down together, hand in hand.
"We'll get through this, alright?"
Rook sighed, shifting closer to Lucanis. "...Okay."
Lucanis brought his hand up to Rooks face, resting on the side of his cheek. Lucanis smiled warmly at him. He had to pull rook down a bit, but he planted a kiss on his cheek.
Rooks face flushed, despite having kissed before. A smile appeared on him, and he then rested his head on top of Lucanis's.
"I don't deserve you." Rook whispered.
"I say the same thing about you every night."
There was a long pause before he spoke up again.
"Love you, Lu."
The nickname made him feel warm, as he doesn't really get them.
"I love you too, Roo."
Rook chuckled. "Hey you only removed a 'k' from my name, how uncreative."
"You just removed more letters from mine! What's so different???" Lucanis mocked offense.
"Mine was so creative! Has anyone called you 'Lu' before?"
"Has anyone called you Roo before?"
"Hey I wasn't even talked Rook before Varric"
"..fair point, you have an unfair advantage."
"What's that supposed to mean."
Lucanis shrugged, smirking, that classic look he has. Rook jabbed him with his elbow.
"Hey! What was that for!?"
Rook shrugged, copying his expression.
Lucanis tackled Rook, knocking them both off of the couch and onto the floor.
"Oh shit -- are you okay?" Lucanis quickly asked rook, looking down at him as he laid over him.
Rook just stared at him for a moment, before chuckling. Lucanis sighed with a smile and just set his head down onto Rook.
They both stayed there, Rook running his hand through lucanis's hair. Eventually falling asleep, not quite comfortable, still on the floor, but, they are together, and that's the only thing that's ever mattered to them.
