Work Text:
I'll pick you up at 7
Black tie optional
No I'm not kidding
That was all the texts said.
Tommy already knew they had a date tonight, Evan had mentioned it last week but has been highly secretive about what they would be doing. And now apparently it was going to be fancy. So that's how Tommy found himself dressed in his best suit, wondering if it was already too much or if he should add cufflinks, and waiting for his boyfriend to arrive so he can finally have an answer to where they're going tonight.
When the doorbell rang, Tommy was definitely not about to change his mind for the third time about adding a tie, and went to answer the door.
"Wow," Buck said when the door opened. "You look.... stunning."
"You don't look so bad yourself," Tommy replied with a smile.
Buck smiled, "The uber will be here in a minute. I didn't want to deal with driving or finding parking so I figured I could leave my car parked here."
"I could drive us."
"I don't want either of us to deal with driving or parking."
"Plus you just don't want to tell me where we're going."
"Well it would ruin the surprise." Buck's phone buzzes in his hand. "Come on. The uber's here."
Tommy closes the door behind him and they walk to the car.
Buck opens the car's back door for Tommy to get in.
"Why thank you," Tommy says stepping into the car.
"Ooh wait! I almost forgot," Buck says as he turns and runs back towards his car.
Tommy sits down and slides over to sit behind the driver.
"Do you know where we're going?" He asks the driver.
"I mean, I have the address in the app. This isn't a blink-twice-if-you-need-help sorta situation, is it?"
"No, my boyfriend just won't tell me what the plan is."
"Okay. Ready," Buck says, sitting down in the car and shutting the door. "You didn't ask where we're going, did you?"
"He did," said the driver.
"Tattletale," said Tommy.
"You didn't tell him, did you?" Buck asked, turning his head towards the driver.
"I did not."
"Five stars. Huge tip."
"Evan. Where are we going?"
"Soon. Oh, here. I got you this." Buck opened the box in his lap and pulled out a rose bud.
"You got me a boutonniere? We're not going to a wedding, are we?"
"No, we are not going to a wedding," Buck laughed, pinning the boutonniere to Tommy's lapel. "And I got us boutonnieres."
Tommy takes the second rose bud from the box and pins it to Buck's lapel.
"Okay so, fancy dress. Boutonnieres. But not a wedding. I give up," Tommy says, settling back into his seat.
Buck takes Tommy's hand and shifts his body to look at him.
"I've been thinking a lot about what we talked about a couple weeks ago. About our prom experiences? And I know you can only now admit that you wanted to go to your prom with the captain of the football team, but that means you didn't really get the prom you wanted. And that made me think that there's probably a ton of adults who dealt with similar issues. So I looked it up. And it turns out, there's an all-ages queer prom tonight at the lgbt center in Hollywood. And I thought maybe we could go."
The car pulls to the curb and comes to a stop.
"Evan-"
"Hold that thought." Buck opens his door and runs around the car to open Tommy's door. Tommy takes Buck's outstretched hand and steps out of the car.
"Have fun you crazy kids," the driver says before the door is shut.
"If you hate the idea, we don't have to stay. We can go get dinner instead. It's okay."
"No," Tommy shakes his head, "Evan I don't hate the idea. I love it. It's so thoughtful. So very you."
Tommy thinks if he were a cartoon, he'd have hearts floating all around him as he leans in and kisses Buck.
Buck smiles as the pull apart. "I was gonna pass you a note in science class, but I was worried Mrs. McGuckin would see and confiscate it."
Tommy chuckles.
"Now I know I'm not the captain, but I am on the football team, so I was wondering if I'd do?"
"You'll more than do. Cause I actually spend all game looking at you," Tommy replies, playing along.
"Does that mean you'll go to prom with me, Tommy?"
"Yes Evan," Tommy laughs, "I will go to prom with you."
Buck leans in and kisses Tommy. They both smile as the pull back.
"And you know what?" Tommy asks as they turn to walk inside. "We're finally gonna get to dance."
"I can't wait," Buck says, smile never leaving his face.
