The thing that sucks about living in a conservative society is same-sex marriage not being legalised. That is kind of a problem for Kanade and Mafuyu as they plan their marriage.
"I know the legal part of it is only trivial but... I wanted it to be on paper. Showing that our country approves of our relationship." Kanade said quietly as she fidgeted with the straw in her drink. Ena and Mizuki nodded wordlessly. Mafuyu placed a hand on Kanade's shoulder.
"We've already been having trouble with booking venues. Some places just won't accept couples like us... and the dresses have also proven to be difficult." Mafuyu said, looking a bit more empty than usual.
"But of course, we're not going to give up." Kanade gave Mafuyu a soft smile. "Even if it takes decades for it to get legalised, I'm going to marry Mafuyu."
"Then just do it to spite them!" Ena and Mizuki yelled. Kanade and Mafuyu blinked.
"I mean, same-sex marriage isn't legalised yet, but it's recognised in this city. We can work out the venues and the dresses together, but we should at least try now." Ena said firmly. Mizuki spoke up as well.
"I think you guys forgot that you have me here." Mizuki said proudly as they put their hand on their chest. "I can make the dresses for you guys!"
"That's... Thank you, Mizuki. That's really kind of you." Kanade smiled.
"But what about the venue?" Mafuyu asked bluntly.
"Did you guys know that a lot of couples get married at pride?" Mizuki asked. Kanade and Mafuyu shook their heads. They had been to pride before, however since Kanade was melting in the heat and Mafuyu didn't like the crowd, they never stayed for long.
"Well, they do. It's more for symbolism because at pride they're surrounded by people who support them... safe for the homophobic protestors, I guess. But it is common, and some booths even provide the marriage forms." Mizuki explained. Mafuyu seemed confused.
"What's the point of the marriage forms? It's not going to be approved anyway." Mafuyu asked. Mizuki hummed.
"Well, you submit those marriage forms to the government, and of course they get denied. But now you have concrete records of the government dismissing your relationship. That can be used as evidence when they try to put in a same-sex marriage law." Mizuki added, showing pictures of queer couples at pride.
"That's actually a very nice sentiment. We might become part of a bigger movement." Kanade said, seeming to have cheered up a bit. Mafuyu held Kanade's hand.
"I want to do it. Don't you?"
Kanade looked into Mafuyu's eyes, and gave her a small nod. "Let's do it. Together."
It was supposed to rain that day. Kanade worried about having to hold umbrellas while they kissed, or hogging up a booth for their ceremony. Thankfully, it was sunny with a few clouds here and there. Maybe god wasn't homophobic after all, unlike what the protestors were shouting just a few blocks away.
Kanade held Mafuyu's hand just a little tighter, smiling at how pristine Mafuyu looked with her white dress and white tiara. Mafuyu admired how beautiful Kanade was in her dress, her hair in a braid. Oh, Mizuki definitely had fun playing with Kanade's hair.
Kanade's hand trembles just a little bit as she places the ring on Mafuyu's finger. Mafuyu has a rare hint of nervousness in her eyes when she picks up Kanade's ring. Meanwhile Kanade is whispering soft niceties under her breath, like "You're doing great" or "Thank you, Mafuyu".
Finally, with thier hearts beating out of their chest, they are at the peak of their ceremony, with Ena and Mizuki's shared "You may now kiss the bride."
"CONGRADULATIONS!"
A roar of cheers from unknown people ring through Mafuyu and Kanade's ears. Kanade is smiling so happily and Mafuyu gives a soft smile as well, softly placing another kiss on Kanade's forehead. They're so happy that they doesn't even care that someone is audibly sobbing as they yell "CONDRAGULATIONS" like they're RuPaul.
"How does it feel to be married?" Ena asks as she hands Kanade and Mafuyu a sheet of paper; a marriage form. Kanade takes it in her hands, signing her name on the paper.
"I'm glad. I'm glad that it's with Mafuyu... The person I love the most." Kanade said as she gave the paper to Mafuyu. Honestly, no words could describe what she felt. She was just content, excited.
"I'm... happy." Mafuyu says, which surprises Mizuki and Ena. Meanwhile Kanade hugs Mafuyu, leaning into her shoulder and whispering.
"Did I finally save you?"
Mafuyu carefully write her name on the paper, handing it back to Ena.
"You did a long time ago, Kanade." Mafuyu said as she kissed Kanade again.
"I'm glad I get to marry my saviour."
"I'm glad I get to marry mine."
