The Quiet Between Claws

Summary:

Inside the Golden Castle, Izutsumi finds herself softening toward Marcille, and letting down walls she'd long forgotten how to lower. But once the castle fades and reality returns, Izutsumi recoils, haunted by her own vulnerability. What happened between them was real… but it can't last.

Chapter Text

The walls hummed with quiet magic. It was not the raw, dangerous kind that threatened to swallow them whole, but something warmer and older, like the light from the sun. The kind that clung to corners and brushed your skin like distant lullabies.

The Golden Castle was too still, too perfect, and Marcille didn’t entirely trust it. But even she couldn’t deny the soft pull of it, or the strange comfort it offered.

She glanced to her side, and there Izutsumi was again, curled up like a cat on a tapestry-covered bench. Her head rested lazily in Marcille’s lap, her eyes half-lidded, watching the ceiling through strands of her unbrushed hair.

This had been happening more and more lately. I t had started with a touch, brushing dust from Izutsumi’s ear, with a murmur of thanks. Then a nudge, then a lean, and now this... The proud, prickly beastkin who used to snarl at any show of affection now melted at the smallest stroke of fingers on her hair.

Marcille’s hand moved instinctively, combing gently through the dark strands. Izutsumi made a low, pleased sound in her throat, her ears twitching beneath the touch. “You’re very affectionate today,” the blonde elf murmured, tone light and teasing, but not unkind.

Izutsumi gave a little shrug, her voice muffled. “Don’t get used to it.”

Marcille smiled faintly. “I won’t. But I’ll still enjoy it while it lasts.”

There was something solemn in that. The way Marcille looked at her now, as though she knew this tenderness was only borrowed... It had an expiration date stamped somewhere behind Izutsumi’s bright eyes.

“I don’t… usually like people touching me,” Izutsumi said after a pause. Her voice was low and uncertain. “Maizuru used to hold me down when I got too wild. She said it was for my own good.”

Marcille’s fingers stilled for a breath. She didn’t say, ' That’s horrible.' She knew Izutsumi didn’t want pity. So instead, the elf whispered, “Is this different?”

Izutsumi’s ears lowered. “It’s soft,” she said finally. “Warm. Like... like a memory I forgot I had.”

Marcille swallowed against the tightness in her chest. Her hand resumed its motion, but more tender this time. It was like touching the ghost of a wounded thing that had dared to trust again. “You’re safe here,” she said softly, “with me.”

Izutsumi didn’t answer. But she shifted, pressing her face deeper into Marcille’s lap, and let her tail curl contentedly over Marcille’s knee.

A strange calm bloomed between them. No monsters, no hunger, no running... Just stolen peace. The castle may have been full of illusions, but this moment was real.

And Marcille, knowing how fleeting it would be, held it with quiet reverence.

The room had no proper windows, but light spilled through it anyway; thick and golden like syrup, pooling in the folds of ancient cushions and bathing the cracked tiles in quiet warmth.

Marcille sat cross-legged near a slumped tapestry, its once-brilliant patterns faded to muted reds and violets. Her spellbook lay unopened in her lap, her hands idle. Her attention was fixed on the girl curled up in a sun-drenched patch across the room. Izutsumi, dozing in a nest of old velvet, her head tilted just enough to catch the light.

Marcille had seen her sleep before, but not like this. Izutsumi was relaxed. Her tail twitched in slow, almost dreamy sweeps. Her face, usually drawn in sharp lines of suspicion or snarling pride, looked younger somehow.

When the beastkin shifted suddenly, blinking blearily, she found Marcille watching her. “You’re staring again,” she muttered, her voice thick with sleep.

Marcille flushed. “Sorry. You just looked... peaceful.”

Izutsumi stretched, her long limbs folding and unfolding like a cat basking in warmth. She didn’t seem upset, more amused. Or maybe too relaxed to bother bristling. “It feels weird,” she said, settling again. “All this stillness. Like my body knows it’s not real, but doesn’t care.”

Marcille hesitated. Then, softly: “You look beautiful in this light.”

That made Izutsumi blink, slowly, like the words had moved through water to reach her. “Do I?” she asked. Not teasing, just... curious.

Marcille nodded, her voice low. “You always do. But it’s different here. Like this place lets you breathe deeper.”

Izutsumi watched her for a long moment, her ears flicking forward. Then, with an effortful movement, she uncurled and crawled across the cushions toward Marcille.

She didn’t speak, she just came close. Close enough that their knees brushed. Close enough that Marcille could feel the warmth radiating from her skin and fur.

“Can I...?” Izutsumi asked, eyes half-lidded. Her voice trembled slightly. “Would it be okay if I-?” She didn’t finish. She didn’t have to.

Marcille opened her arms without a word.

Izutsumi moved into them like a wild thing recognizing home. It was natural, silent, and inevitable. She pressed her face to Marcille’s collarbone, her breath warm against the elf’s neck. One of her arms looped loosely around Marcille’s waist. The other hand hesitated at her side for a moment, then took Marcille’s hand and held it gently, like she wasn’t used to holding anything soft.

Marcille let her cheek rest against Izutsumi’s temple. Her heartbeat echoed loudly in her own ears. “You’re trembling,” she whispered.

“I know,” Izutsumi murmured. “It’s just... nice. Too nice. I keep waiting for it to turn sharp.”

“It won’t,” Marcille said. “Not here, not with me.”

There was a long silence.

Izutsumi nuzzled closer, then pulled back just enough to look up at her. Her pupils were wide, catching the gold. Her voice barely a breath. “If things were different... I think I’d let you kiss me.”

Marcille froze, the words like a warm hand wrapping around her heart. Then, just as quietly: “If you wanted me to, I would.”

Izutsumi didn’t answer. She didn’t lean forward, and she didn’t close the distance. She just rested her forehead gently against Marcille’s and whispered, “Let’s stay like this... just a little longer.”

Marcille, breathless, nodded. Her arms tightened around the girl who had once flinched from every kindness.

No kiss.

Just the hum of warmth in a place where time didn’t touch them. Where softness could be dared without fear.

Just for now.
