Maybe this is a bad idea. It’s definitely not a good one, but Gen is certain that Melissa can do it, and who is she to deny her best friend's entertainment. Sadly, that entertainment includes Melissa riding her skateboard off of the main stairs in their school.
Melissa looks down at the empty hall. She knows this can only end with detention (the soccer girls will kill her), a broken bone (the soccer girls and her mother will kill her), or both. If she somehow manages to escape scott-free, well, Gen borrowed Shauna’s camera just for this purpose.
“C’mon, hurry it up!” Gen exclaims. Melissa rolls her eyes, she’s not the one who’s basically committing suicide.
“Are you recording?” Melissa asks. The stairs look steeper than they did before. Have they always been like that? She swallows nervously.
“Yup, go whenever you’re ready.” Easier said than done. Still, Melissa can’t help but think about how cool it would be if she ended up succeeding. Everybody would think she was a legend.
She looks back at Gen, who gives her a thumbs up. All you gotta do is commit , she tells herself. Then, she sends it, closing her eyes for a brief moment before pushing off. She leans forward, praying she doesn’t break every bone in her body.
Melissa can hear Gen’s cheers faintly behind the sound of her beating heart. Then, the board is touching the ground and Melissa has to lean her weight to one side so she doesn’t crash into the wall.
She stops just in time to see Jackie walking down the hall. “Shit. Gen!” She calls out. Her friend is already racing down the stairs with Shauna’s camera in hand.
“Dude, I got it all on video, you’re fucking legendary.”
Melissa elbows Gen, shaking her head. “Not the time.” She points down the hall at Jackie, whose face is scrunched up in anger. Shauna is next to her, a small smile on her face, like she’s trying to hold back her laughter.
“Oh crap. Should we run?”
“Shauna would catch us,” Melissa says, shutting down that idea. Their best course of action is to take their punishment with as much grace as possible. “Besides, how angry could she possibly be?” Melissa asks nervously.
Jackie stomps over to them, Shauna still in tow. “Melissa! Gen! What the fuck do you think you’re doing? Not only is this the third class you’ve missed this week, but you’re also risking your fucking lives.”
Melissa opens her mouth to defend herself but Jackie raises a hand to stop her. “Nope. I don’t wanna hear it. You’re lucky I’m not going to report you two, but Jesus Christ, you could have broken a bone. Then you would be fucking useless at Nationals. What if one of us gets sick and we need a sub for a game? Well, now we’re down on JV girls to fill those spots. You idiots .”
Ouch . “Sorry, Jackie, it won’t happen again,” Melissa says, scratching the back of her head.
“Can I have my camera back?” Shauna asks. Gen nods, handing it to her. Shauna immediately starts watching the video. “Jax, c’mon, this is fucking epic. Van is gonna love this.”
Gen and Melissa high five lightly so Jackie won’t see from where she’s looking over Shauna’s shoulder.
“You’re both doing suicides at practice today.” With that, Jackie turns on her heel and leaves. Shauna follows, laughing hysterically.
Gen and Melissa fall into a fit of giggles. “I think we got off easy,” Melissa says.
