Chapter 1: Lost friendship

Chapter Text

It was an early morning, the blinds slicing the light that seeped into your dorm, your alarm ringing annoyingly in your ear. You usually wouldn’t wake up at such an early time, but plans you made with max kept you from sleeping in. “It’s too early for this shit.” you complained to yourself as you sat up, pressing the “stop” button on your alarm instead of snooze–the time read 8:45.

You groaned, deeply wishing you could just lay your head back down on your perfectly fluffed pillow and wrap yourself in your thick comforter. Getting out of bed, you sluggishly walked toward the aged, brown wardrobe that held your thrifted clothes.
Your fingertips scanned every hung clothing item until they ran across a fabric you thought would be comfortable for the day–a plain but comfortable t-shirt. Casting the shirt over your shoulder, you grabbed a pair of sweats along with some underwear, laying the clothes out on your bed for after your shower.

(after showering, brushing your teeth, washing your face and brushing some of the naps out of your bedhead.)

You were dressed, ready to go so you sent Maxine a quick text before leaving the dorms.
“I'm ready, meet me outside the dorms.”
It took ten long minutes that felt like an hour for max to come out, within that time you had almost gotten hit by a football twice as the jocks did early morning warm ups by the bench you sat on.

“Sorry for making you wait, I know I gave you a specific time but I couldn't find my jacket.” Max apologized which made you feel a bit better about nearly getting knocked in the head by a football more than once. You and Max left the dormitories hand in hand as some best friends do.

Unfortunately, neither of you had a car so the bus was the only option of transportation. You both stood there on the sidewalk, waiting. It felt as if you two had been waiting forever, yet the bus still never showed. “Well, there goes the plans for today. I did want pancakes from the diner, but it’s fine.” Max voiced, but before you could even spread your lips to answer, another voice took your spot.

“Holy shit Max it’s been forever!” Some punk girl exclaimed from the driver's seat of an old truck that stopped right in front of us. You had never seen this girl before, she had vibrant blue hair, wore a beanie, and from what you could tell by looking at her threw her rolled down window–she had the style of a punk. Confusion plastered across your face, but Max’s eyes lit up upon seeing the girl. “Oh my gosh Chloe, it's been forever!” Max took your hand and without even knowing if you wanted to follow, tugged you towards the truck with her.
“Chloe, this is my friend, y/n. We were on the way to the diner, the one your mom works at–but the bus never came. Think we could catch a ride in your truck?” Max seemed overly comfortable with this girl, yet you never knew about her. Chloe, with zero hesitation allowed you and Max to hop into the passenger seat of her truck. The whole short ride Chloe and Max talked, catching up on some things as you tried your best not to feel claustrophobic pressing up against Max in the passenger seat you both had to share.

Arriving at the diner, you let out a relieved sigh considering you can finally get out of the cramped truck and stretch your legs. You, Max, and Chloe exited the truck, Chloe’s doors were loudly closed. Entering the diner, there weren’t many people–you silently thanked God it wasn't packed in there, as you hate crowded places. Frank sat in a booth on the far left, as Kate Marsh could be seen writing on her laptop in the booth in front of Franks. Chloe led you and Max to a booth on the far right instead.

“I just noticed I haven’t properly introduced you two. Chloe, this is my friend y/n, and y/n this is Chloe, we've known each other since we were kids.” Max finally introduced you and Chloe to each other, properly. “Sup, nice to meet you.” Chloe greeted you for the first time although you've been around her for the past 15 minutes. “Hey, nice to meet you too.” You said back–but, before anyone else could say anything, Joyce stood by the side of the booth.

“Maxine, Chloe! It’s so nice to see you girls together again, and oh–who’s this young lady?” You felt embarrassed, but pushed it to the side as you responded. “I’m y/n, it’s nice to meet you.” to which Joyce said “That’s a beautiful name, I’m Joyce, it’s a pleasure to meet you as well. What would you girls like to order?” Max ordered pancakes, bacon and eggs with an orange juice, Chloe ordered an omelet, no drink, and you ordered the same thing as Max.

Chloe and Max chatted some more as you all waited on the food. You felt left out, yet didn’t join the conversation as they were just catching up on some things and there wasn’t much you could say. After about 15 minutes, Joyce came out with the food one plate at a time. You all began eating the moment your plates touched the table, “So..” Chloe spoke up, taking a moment to chew before she finished her sentence. “What made you two want to come out to the diner today?” It was obvious she was just making an attempt at starting a conversation that both me and Max could be included in. “Breakfast.” Max said through the food in her mouth, pancakes and bacon stuffed her cheeks. “Yeah, breakfast. It gets tiring eating the food at Blackwell.” You said, Chloe chuckled. “Sucks to be you and Max, I got kicked out of Blackwell, I never have to deal with that food again.” You wanted to ask Chloe how–why she got kicked out of Blackwell, but you left your response simple and plain, “Lucky.”

After the diner, you had to get back into that cramped truck which you weren’t excited about, but had no other way to get back to Blackwell so you dealt with it. The ride was silent other than the faint sound of Chloe’s low radio music, until Chloe spoke up. “Do yall want to chill at my place for a bit?” Max responded with a simple yes, but remembering how they were earlier–catching up on the things they've both missed about each other, sort of acting as if you weren’t there for a brief moment, you said “I think I will just get dropped back off at Blackwell. I hope y'all have fun.” and that was that, you were dropped off in the parking lot of Blackwell, Max and Chloe waved goodbye before speeding off. You went on about the rest of your day, catching up on some work you've been needing to finish for school, not hearing from Max.
