Work Text:

. . . . . . . .

‘Akikoooo! Could you come here for a moment? The back of this damned dress isn’t zipping!’

A sing song voice pulled Yosano from her thoughts, fumbling to put her phone down and poke her head into the bedroom. She had to stifle a slight laugh at the sight that met her, Kouyou was sitting on the edge of the bed (looking fabulous as always) and craning her neck to see over her shoulder while she fumbled with the small bit of metal.

Upon hearing her snort, the the other woman whipped her head around with an icy glare, only gesturing for her to come help instead of simply standing there and watching like a child in need of instruction, as she would later so eloquently describe it. Yosano rolled her eyes as she shuffled over, pulling her wife to her feet and spinning her around for a better view of her troubles.

‘Oh. The zip is bent, that’s your problem. If I can just… ah! There we go, it’s up!’

As soon as the thin strip was straight again, Kouyou waved her away so she could continue getting ready without interruption. The two were preparing for the three year anniversary celebration of a successful truce between the agency and the mafia, and thanks to Mori, an entire public garden was rented out for the party.

Her wife had been rambling for days about how excited she was to see all the flowers, something about spider lilies and lotuses and pansies, something of the like. Really, all Yosano could think of was the fact the three years had passed since the treaty, two since the Singularity incident, and 1 and a half since her wedding with the most gorgeous woman to ever walk the earth.

That, and the fact that the president had informed her that there would be unlimited Kubato Manjo sake and red wine, and who was she to say no to a good bit of free alcohol? She was certainly going to need it, if Kajii, Ranpo, and Dazai were all attending. Poe had her pity, the detective had been bragging all day about how he got special permission to bring his boyfriend to the gathering.

Only once had she ever seen the shorter man drunk, but when she did, he basically turned into Dazai. Minus the suicide jokes of course, but he was irritating, loud, and surprisingly good at reading the room for an intoxicated person, so poor Poe would a LOT to deal with once the two got home. That is, if he didn’t leave before the party ended, bless him.

As she whisked out of the room to leave her wife to her devices, the doctor made a point to stop by the hallway mirror and make sure her lipstick hadn’t been smudged from the small kiss she pressed to Kouyou’s cheek on her way out. Thankfully it hadn’t, and she won’t have to spend another ten minutes trying to get it back to it’s original state of perfection.

Somewhere in the garden, she heard their cat, Nozomi, meowing furiously at what she could only assume is a dog on the other side of the fence, or a particularly offensive squirrel taunting her from the top of the small gazebo tucked off to the side. They adopted the fluffy thing little more than 6 months ago, and already she was one of the most stubborn creatures either of them had ever had the pleasure to meet, let alone cuddle with every night.

When they had seen her, all bristled and hissing at another cat in her living space, it was live at first sight. Not only was her coat the most beautiful mottled calico with flecks of silvery white running all across her back, but her eyes were the most striking gold, as if molten lava and dappled sunlight had combined to one heavenly mix that made Kouyou’s heart melt at the sight.

A minute or so later, the frantic hissing cut off, replaced by a warm, fuzzy ball rubbing up against her leg. Now, normally she would have bent down to sent on the floor with the kitten and cradled her for however long she could until Kouyou called her to help with dinner or something of the like, but his time, Nozomi left behind a trail of ginger and white hairs on her smoky plum dress.

‘Oh, shit… you know, I’d try to mad, but you’re just too damn cute to be frustrated with.’

‘Mreeeeohr’

‘Is that so? Well, I’ll speak to whatever upset you as soon as we’re home, how does that sound?’

Talking to a cat, how ridiculous, she told herself, and Kouyou, being whatever sort of mind reader she was, cleared her throat from behind her. The poor purple eyed woman nearly jumped out of her skin, and this time it was her turn to spin around so fast she could feel her golden flower necklace jostling on her shape collarbones.

And oh, maybe she should have been a little slower because nothing, absolutely nothing could have prepared her for the stunning woman in front of her. The coral colored dress she bought had looked nice enough laid out on the bed, but the way the ruffles fanned out around her legs and how it hugged all her curves in just the right places made Yosano’s mouth go completely dry.

Not only that, but Kouyou’s hair was done up in an intricate bun with a copper flower pin to match her own butterfly, and her eyeshadow was a wonderful creamy orange that made her pale skin practically glow in the early evening light. The few freckles littering her shoulders stood out like tiny bits of glitter smattered across the area, and it took every bit of resolve Yosano had not to leave her own kiss marks on them.

‘You look… stunning, babe. Who gave you permission to look like a goddamn supermodel?’

‘Well, I could say the same for you. If it wasn’t for the fact that the bottom of your dress looks like Cruella De Ville got ahold of it.’

Yosano raised an eyebrow at that statement, any time Kouyou made a reference to western culture it always took her a moment to stop and wrack her brain for any past mentions. She hummed in acknowledgement, gently picking the cat up and setting her on the nearby couch so as not to mess her dress up any further.

‘I’m guessing that’s another one of your American movies?’

‘Mhm. We’ll have to watch it tonight, if you aren’t too tired after the the party.’

‘That sounds great.’

‘Alright then. Now, come on, we only have thirty minutes before we need to leave. Let’s get that fur off, yeah?’
