Proposal Panic

Summary:

Requested by Pybro2: Even those in the closest of romantic relationships can find difficulty popping the question. This was true for Honey the Cat and her long-term girlfriend Millie the Fox, two women whose repeated attempts go awry.

Work Text:

“Today will finally be the day.”

This thought continuously raced through Millie’s mind as she gently brushed her twin tails in the restroom of her modest, cliffside home on the outskirts of the Mystic Ruins. Gentle breathing from the queen-sized bed in the adjoining bedroom could be heard as the orange fox put her hair into a ponytail and gave herself a final once over in the mirror, bending her hips and twisting herself around to ensure she had removed as much workshop grease from her fur as possible. Indeed, Millie usually wasn’t this meticulous with her fur, and had been known to leave what others would describe as glaringly obvious oil stains, but the young kitsune made sure her fur was clean as could be, for today was special.

Millie then inspected her outfit: a white sundress with floral designs and a matching sunhat. Once again, not her usual overalls perfect for a messy mechanic, but this outfit was much more appropriate for today’s festivities.

Placing a gloved hand in her pocket, she pulled out a small ring box from within, smiling before placing it back in her dress.

The orange fox’s ears perked up as she heard rustling from the bed. After giving herself one final review, Millie left the bathroom to find her girlfriend sprawled out across the bed.

“Honey…” Millie said in a whispered voice, low enough as to ease the cat out of sleepiness. “Do you wanna get up?”

“…nooo…” Honey flipped herself over, covering her head with her pillow.

“Can we share some tea?” Millie asked, tilting her head in anticipation as her tails fluttered from behind.

“Sure,” Honey replied before delivering a long yawn.

“Tea coming up!” Millie exclaimed, still in a soft voice, before departing for the nearby kitchen.

Moments later, Honey pulled herself out of bed, grabbed her signature red skirt off the floor, and changed in the restroom. Like Millie, Honey took her turn to brush her long, ebony hair, making sure to avoid her triangular ears.

As Honey made her way to the kitchen, following the scent of freshly brewed tea, she briefly halted to ensure the gift she was waiting to give Millie was still resting in her dress pocket. Pulling it out, she opened the ring box to confirm the small diamond ring was still within before putting it back in her dress. Patting her pocket for reassurance, the cat smiled and stepped into the kitchen, a cup of tea awaiting her on the counter as Millie finished preparing her own. Instead of going for her mug, however, the cat approached Millie from behind, giving her a gentle hug. Millie froze for a few seconds before realizing she was caught in a loving embrace. The fox relaxed her muscles, comforted by the touch and feel of the cat as she allowed her head to rest against her shoulder.

Finally, as Honey released her embrace, Millie sighed softly before raising her tea to her lips, taking a light sip as the steam from the cup warmed her furry muzzle.

“If only we could take off work every day,” Honey said, earning a gentle chuckle from the fox.

“That doesn’t stop you from working off the clock,” Millie replied, staring at the cell phone which, as if on cue, began to vibrate on the kitchen counter. Honey approached it and found the vice president of her company calling.

“Damnit…” Honey complained. “I specifically had my assistant email my staff asking everyone to leave me be this week.”

“Thank you for that,” Millie replied, a smile across her face. She recalled just days earlier when the young fox made this request to the cat, who was heavily reluctant but ultimately caved in to her girlfriend, knowing full well that the ambitious cat needed time away from her job as president of one of the largest clothing companies in the world.

“I’ve told you for the longest time that you should give yourself more breaks,” Millie opined. “I’ve made it an absolute priority at my company that nobody works weekends with the exception of major order fulfillments, and everyone gets a month of vacation leave per year, no questions asked.” Indeed, as the president of her own company, which develops parts for commercial jets (originally conceived when Millie had to repeatedly make her own biplane parts due to the inadequate quality of what was available for sale at the time), she made work/life balance a core component of her company’s business model.

“Don’t think I don’t see you working remotely from your workshop past midnight,” Honey retorted.

“Caught red handed,” Millie playfully responded, raising a gloved palm as if to show her guilt. The young fox was well known for being a workaholic, both on her own personal projects in the workshop adjoined to their house as well as the work she performs leading her company.

“Of course,” Honey continued, “we’re both on vacation for an entire week. I can’t remember the last time I’ve been away from work for so long.”

“Yeah, same here,” Millie replied before cracking a smile, a light blush appearing across her muzzle. “I’m happy to finally get to spend more time with you.”

“Ditto,” Honey said as she sipped her tea. “So what’s on the agenda, sweetie?”

“Oh, nothing super extravagant,” Millie replied as she turned to the window overlooking the kitchen sink. “It’s a lovely day today; the sun’s shining bright, and there’s no rain in the forecast at all, so I figured it’d be the perfect opportunity for us to take a nice stroll through the Station Square Municipal Park.”

“I’m down,” Honey replied as she nodded her head. “As long as we don’t fly over HC Headquarters.”

“Don’t worry,” Millie reassured as she placed a palm behind her head, “I’ve mapped it out to where we’ll get to Station Square while completely bypassing Honey Clothing and Prower Performance Parts.” As the two tall office buildings both overlook such a large metropolitan city employing thousands of staff, the orange kitsune wanted to make sure they’d be staying a good distance away in the off chance an executive would flag them down requesting their immediate return to the office…not that these presidents would need to listen to them, but they’d be more likely than not to cave into the request and return to work through a combination of obligation, guilt, and simply being too nice.

Finishing their beverages, the two ladies left for the garage and pulled themselves into the Tornado, Millie’s signature biplane. With a few button clicks and safety checks, Millie soon took off, letting the plane accrue speed down the runway before taking flight just yards before the track gave way to the edge of the mountainside.

The mid-morning, refreshing air whistled through Millie and Honey’s fur, and the sun provided relaxing warmth, as the two leisurely strolled through the well-paved walking path that cut through the mile long municipal park at the heart of Station Square. Despite it being a weekend, there were only a few Mobians and humans dotting the park, with some kids playing on the swings while their parents watched on nearby benches and older people watchers quietly feeding the flickies. Squirrels dashed between the trees, and the occasional sounds of barking and children broke what was otherwise a quiet and serene morning.

Millie and Honey enjoyed each other’s company as they held hands, the latter nibbling on the last remnants of a breakfast bagel from a nearby café while the former was deep in thought, quietly concocting a plan withheld from her feline girlfriend.

“Is everything okay, Millie?” Honey asked, tilting her head in concern.

“Oh, yeah,” she replied as she scratched the back of her head, chuckling nervously as a large sweat droplet rolled down her forehead in traditional anime fashion. Satisfied with this response, the cat shifted her focus on the environment around her as she loosened her grip on Millie’s hand.

The fox took this opportunity to check her pockets, the ring box in one and a remote in the other. Sticking her tongue out slightly in concentration, she performed several last minute calculations in her head, triple checking the computations she performed several nights prior at this very spot, in the hopes that she’d get the timing perfect.

Taking a deep breath, and sighing gently, the orange kitsune clicked the button on her remote.

“Hey Honey,” Millie began as she stopped walking.

“What is it, Millie?” Honey replied.

“We’ve been together for a while, right?”

“Ummm, yes?” Honey was confused by the seemingly random question and noticed the shift in her girlfriend’s demeanor. Indeed, Millie crossed her legs and was no longer maintaining eye contact.

“I’ve thought long and hard about it, and, well…” Millie scratched the back of her head once more. “And, like…I really like you, and…” The fox’s mind blanked as she perked her ears, expecting to hear her Tornado biplane flying over any second, but it was nowhere in sight “and…ummm…”

“Are you sure you’re okay, Millie?” Honey asked, tilting her head in concern once more.

“Y-yeah…” Millie took a deep breath, hoping to buy enough time while making what would be one of the most important moments in her life as unawkward as possible. She cleared her throat. “This time we’ve spent and lived together has made me so, so happy, and I…” The young fox’s ears twitched as the familiar sound of her biplane up ahead. “Oh, look up there!” Millie exclaimed, all but throwing out her weeks long rehearsed speech she hoped would transition seamlessly into what was about to transpire above.

“Your plane is flying itself?” Honey asked, raising a single eyebrow.

“Just watch,” Millie replied with a nervous smile as she slipped a single gloved hand between Honey’s fingers. While the speech was perhaps a bit more awkward than what Millie envisioned, she at least got the two of them to witness the perfect view of the Tornado’s pre-programmed, autonomous flight pattern.

Honey gasped as the plane began to expel white smoke. Performing several sharp swerves in all directions, the smoke began to form legible letters.

“H…O…N…E…Y…”

The plane then began forming a new sentence directly below.

“W…I…L…L…Y…O…”

As the Tornado was about to expel smoke for the next letter, however, a missile rapidly approached the lone biplane, causing a massive explosion.

“What!?!” Millie exclaimed. Her mouth was agape as she and her girlfriend watched helplessly as the plane began a sharp, downward descent, exploding upon impact not too far away across the municipal park.

“Bullseye!” Exclaimed a large, maniacal voice from above, amplified through a speaker attached to a flying mech above.

“Eggman!” The two shouted simultaneously as they pointed toward the mech, which was now making its own descent toward the two lovers below.

“And here I thought I got rid of you for good,” Eggman said from the safety of his mech’s cockpit. The vessel’s head resembled Eggman’s facial features and included large, metallic arms and legs as well as missile launchers and other weapons throughout its body. “At least downing your precious plane is delicious payback for the last mech you and your furball friends vandalized! Woooahoohoohoo!” Eggman’s evil laughter echoed across the park.

“It’s not vandalism when you were literally terrorizing poor little flickies!” Millie exclaimed. “We simply put a stop to your repeated attempt at capturing them for your Badniks.”

“And you assume those stupid little creatures wouldn’t have desired a greater purpose in life, serving their new ruler by providing a cheap and efficient source of energy for the Eggman Empire,” Robotnik retorted.

“You’re delusional,” Honey replied as she cracked her knuckles. “Millie and I will send you packing!”

“It’ll be your own funeral, rodent,” Eggman declared as he pressed a series of buttons on his dashboard, firing off several miniature missiles at the two below.

Millie and Honey nodded to each other with furrowed brows, bending their knees as they prepared their counterattack. Moments before the first round reached their furry targets, the two dove toward the nearest missiles, performing spindashes off each missile until the final explosion propelled the duo high in the air, reaching the height of Eggman’s mech.

Once they reached their apex, Millie unfurled from her ball and suspended herself in the air using her rotary tails. Reaching her arms down, Honey grabbed hold before the orange kitsune flew toward the evil scientist.

“You think you’re so clever?” Eggman jeered, “but wait until you get a load of this!” Pressing a chain of several buttons on his dashboard once more, Robotnik launched a second round of missiles.

Fully synchronized with one another, Millie spun several times in the air before releasing Honey from her grip. The cat entered her spherical form, blasting through the ongoing missiles and penetrating the outer metal shell of Eggman’s mech, creating a clean hole through the torso of the machine and coming out the other end. The impact caused sparks to fly and, ultimately, for the mech to lose its balance.

“Noooo!” Eggman exclaimed as he pressed the abort button on his dashboard, allowing the Egg Mobile to detach itself from the mech and suspend itself in the air, likely avoiding serious injury.

Millie descended to meet Honey near the down mech. “You okay, Honey?”

“Never better!” Honey replied as she dusted off her red dress. “Looks like you got some dirt on your sundress too.” The yellow cat proceeded to dust it off using her gloved palm, causing the orange fox to blush.

“Curse you rats! You rodents! You rapscallions!” Eggman cried from his floating Egg Mobile. “Next time, you won’t be so lucky!” The evil doctor proceeded to fly away, black smoke trailing behind his personal transport, seemingly damaged from the sudden ejection.

“Well, so much for our date,” Honey said as she stretched her legs, “but at least we foiled Eggman’s plans again.”

“Yeah…” Millie replied, her face downcast as a sigh escaped her lips. She patted her pocket, relieved that the fight didn’t result in losing the precious gift.

“I guess today’s not the day,” she said to herself as the two went to inspect the damage to the Tornado.

Later that week, still on vacation from their corporate jobs, the two planned a different kind of activity.

“Hiiiyaaaa!” Millie exclaimed as she threw a punch at Honey. The two, clad in loose, white attire, were sparring at the cat’s dojo, a side hustle she owns but doesn’t operate on a day-to-day basis. The dojo consisted of several large rooms, each with foam matted floors, and enough air conditioning to comfortably work up a decent sweat. The place is staffed by various martial arts experts, but she reserved one room in particular for this special sparring session.

“Missed!” Honey proclaimed, dodging the punch with apparent ease as she retaliated with a roundhouse kick to the orange fox’s rear, sending Millie diving forward and falling to the cushioned floor. “At this rate, you’ll never win the prize!”

“Oh yeah?” Millie began to pull herself up. With a grin, the fox activated her rotary namesakes, the sudden burst of wind generated by these appendages catching Honey off-guard, giving the orange kitsune the perfect opportunity to launch her counterattack: a roundhouse kick of her own that sent Honey spinning toward the floor before.

“Not bad,” Honey said as she pulled herself up, wiping the sweat from her brow. She grinned to herself as she watched Millie from several feet away pushing her orange bangs back and wiping the sweat from her eyes. “All according to plan,” the cat whispered to herself.

Just a few more blows, and Millie will pin me down for sure…

Honey smirked as she patted the mystery gift in her sparring outfit pocket. The cat’s well concocted scheme will throw Millie for a loop, and she was excited to witness the payoff of her scheme, but the sparring session needed to last a little bit longer to retain the appearance of authenticity.

“You ready for more?” Honey asked as she bent her knees and put her arms up in a fighting stance.

“As always,” Millie replied, emulating the young cat.

Honey was the first to launch forward, her arm outstretched as she prepared a punch, but Millie spun around, deflecting the attack with her twin tails as she spun out of the way. Honey then stopped in place, bent her knees, and performed a backflip, landing in front of the orange kitsune. The cat proceeded to grab the fox’s waist and threw her several feet. Millie fell to the floor, rolling until she launched herself back to her feet using her tails.

“My turn!” Millie declared as she took flight, her baggy training attire rippling as the orange fox plotted her next move. Making a rapid descent toward the yellow cat, Honey dodged the fox’s attack once more, this time grabbing her twin tails and spinning around several times to launch her against the cushioned wall.

Honey stepped toward the downed fox, whose face was against the floor once more. “Had enough?” Honey asked, smirking from above as she placed her hands on her hips.

“Not quite,” Millie replied, rolling herself into Honey’s feet, causing her to fall back first. Wasting no time, the orange fox jumped on top of her, pinning her down with her hands, legs, and tails.

“One…two…three…” Millie began the countdown with labored breaths, sweat dripping from her face and landing on Honey as the cat gave a convincing struggle, grunting as the fox tightened her grip on the cat’s limbs and pressed even more weight down against Honey’s body. In Millie’s eyes, her girlfriend was trapped beneath her grasp, and the battle was about to end with her victory.

“Seven…eight…” Millie gripped Honey’s limbs even tighter, her face turning a shade of light red as her struggle continued. Honey tried lifting her legs to kick the fox off, but her attempt to break free was futile.

“…n-niiine…” At this point, Honey let her head fall back, and she ceased straining her arms and legs, instead allowing her girlfriend to secure this well-earned victory.

“…teee—” Before Millie could finish the countdown, a snicker could be heard from the nearby entrance. Millie and Honey peered over to find Sonic the Hedgehog smirking from the sidelines.

“Looks like you two are having fun,” Sonic jeered as he ran a gloved hand through his blue quills.

Millie and Honey simply stared at each other for a few moments before realizing the implications of his words. The two lovers blushed profusely upon seeing the position they were in which, without the proper context, could’ve been misconstrued to be, at the very least, romantic.

“Don’t mind me,” Sonic continued as he pulled up a chair and began sipping a soda with a straw, a chili dog in his other hand, while maintaining eye contact with the embarrassed couple, a smirk across the blue hedgehog’s muzzle. “Please continue.”

“Ohh, it’s not what it looks like!” Millie exclaimed as she threw herself off the yellow cat.

“Oh yeah?” Sonic asked. “Then why are you sweating so much, and why are you so flustered? Your face is as red as a strawberry!”

“Ahhhhh!” This only made Millie’s face burn up even more. She placed her gloved palms over her eyes as if to hide from the embarrassment.

“So what if we were?” Honey asked, a smirk across her face as well as she pulled herself off the floor, wiping sweat from her brow once more.

“Eh, it’s none of my business anyway,” Sonic replied with a shrug before returning to his chili dog.

“Do you want to join us?” Millie asked with a wholesome smile across her face.

“Join you doing that?!” Sonic exclaimed, dropping the rest of his chili dog on the floor. “Nah, I don’t need any cooties.”

“Doing what?” Millie asked, tilting her head in confusion.

“Oh, Millie,” Honey replied with a laugh. “It’s always so cute when things like this go over your head.”

A few seconds of reflection later, Millie gasped once more, her face turning a darker shade of crimson as the implication became clear. “No, I didn’t mean that; I meant sparring!”

“I suppose I could go for a round,” Sonic replied before checking his wristwatch communicator. “On second thought, I am running late for my date with Ames.”

“Oh yeah, he’s been chasing you for years now,” Honey replied with a smirk. “Finally givin’ him a chance, ay?”

“What is it to you?” Sonic replied semi-defensively, flustered once more.

“It’s just nice to see you giving Ames a shot,” Millie replied. “Hope your date goes well!”

“Yeah, me too!” Sonic pulled himself from his chair, picked up the chili dog off the floor, and threw it into his mouth. “Schyaa,” he said with a full mouth as he waved back at the couple and left the dojo.

“How’d he even know we were here?” Honey asked with a single brow raised, her hand against her chin in thought.

“Probably because our bicycles were out front,” Millie replied, pointing toward the entrance.

“Ah yeah, that’d track,” Honey said. Peering down, she patted her pocket, confirming the ring wasn’t lost during their training.

“Can we go home?” Millie asked. “I’m all sticky from our exercise and could go for a long bath.” The orange kitsune’s tails fluttered at the thought.

“Yeah,” Honey replied with an affirming nod. “Let’s go.”

Millie was the first to leave the dojo, returning to her bike to undo the lock. Honey stayed inside for a few moments, however, sighing to herself as she contemplated what to do next.

“That Sonic ruined the moment…” She peered down at her pocket once more, the gift still within. “I’ll find another time…I’ll make sure it’s special.”

“I’ll make sure to do this right.”

It was nearing the end of Millie and Honey’s vacation from work, and they had one final event planned.

The two held hands as they approached a dock leading out into the river cutting through Spagonia. The sun was starting to set, yet it was still bright enough to enjoy the site of the historic buildings and the sun’s glow reflecting from the water’s surface.

A tall human stood on the edge of the dock where he guarded a gondola tied up awaiting their next passengers.

“Ah, Ms. Millie, Ms. Honey, welcome,” greeted the gondolier. “Per your request, you will not be accompanied by me for the trip, and you may return the gondola any time before midnight. I will need to charge your credit card if the boat is not returned or if it’s damaged.”

With a smile and a nod, the two Mobians boarded the long boat and sat next to each other.

The gondolier untied the boat from the dock, and with a gentle tap of his foot, the boat slowly began its journey down the river.

As Millie and Honey sat next to each other on the gondola, they each contemplated how they would pop the question.

“Maybe I should wait until the moon is just about the dip below the horizon?” Millie thought to herself.

“Spagonia is known for their firework displays…maybe I could wait until we see some festive lights? But what if they’re taking a break this evening?” Honey asked herself as well.

The two fidgeted in their seats, looking rather uncomfortable but so wrapped up in their own thoughts that they didn’t notice the other’s downcast demeanor, at least for several minutes. Finally, as if by clockwork, Millie and Honey peered into each other’s eyes, and with that, all the anxiety and stress permeating their thoughts seemed to wash away; indeed, the stress over getting the timing and the moment just right no longer felt necessary. As long as they had each other, they would be happy, and looking into their lovers’ eyes solidified this very fact.

And so, as their burdens melted away, Millie and Honey slowly wrapped their arms around each other and reached in for a kiss on the lips. Their muzzles turned a slight pink as they partially opened their eyes, as if to check they weren’t in a dream, before reaching in once more to share a kiss longer than the last. Indeed, the two young women locked lips for what seemed like an eternity, their arms wrapped around each other, feeling an utter sense of joy as they shared this wholesome, unplanned romantic moment with their significant other.

Finally, Millie and Honey ended their kiss, and their eyes locked once more. Millie placed a single gloved hand on Honey’s cheek, the cat repeating the same with her opposite hand, the two sharing a smile as the gondola took them ever so slowly down the romantic Spagonian river for all to see, yet the two were unashamed, instead completely transfixed by their respective lover.

Finally, Millie spoke up.

“I have something to say,” spouted Millie and Honey simultaneously.

“Oh, ummm, you first,” Honey replied.

“Are you sure?” Millie asked.

“Yes,” Honey said with a nod as she gently held Millie’s soft, delicate hands.

“Okay, well…” Sweat started forming along Millie’s brow, and focusing on Honey’s lovely smile once more, she couldn’t conjure up the right words.

“What’s wrong, cat got your tongue?” Honey smirked as she playfully elbowed Millie.

“Ha,” she replied with a smile of her own. “Well, I guess you did have my tongue a few moments ago.”

“Maybe some more cat tongue would help get the words out?” Honey suggested with a wink.

“How would a kiss help me tal—” Millie was interrupted by that very tongue as Honey pressed her lips against her own. The cat sat in Millie’s lap and wrapped her arms around her partner as they kissed once more. The two were completely and utterly lost in each other’s embrace; all felt right in the world when they were together, and there was nothing that could ruin this perfect moment. Indeed, the site, appearance, smell of their partner were sublime. There was nothing they would change about the other, and if they played their cards right, they would solidify their relationship with a proposal to make it all but permanent…if only they had the words to do so.

But for now, the two lovers continued enjoying each other’s embrace as the sun continued setting over the horizon, and pretty soon, Millie allowed herself to lean back until she was completely on her back in the long gondola, with more than enough space for the relatively short Mobian to lay comfortably within. Honey pressed herself against her fox girlfriend, their kiss and embrace only continuing in the meantime until they were on their sides, their arms wrapped around each other, keeping themselves warm as the warmth from the sun shortly began to dissipate.

Nothing could make this evening any more magical; the romantic ambience provided by the architectural cityscape, and the whooshing sound of the river carrying them through Spagonia, were beyond anything they’d ever read in romance novels, and with their partner lying next to them, they had totally forgotten about their respective proposals, their gifts still rattling in their pockets as they continued their long, loving embrace.

As the sun gave way to the moon, they began to grow tired, and as the minutes – hours – went by, and as the stars began to dot the majestic sky above, the young cat and her two-tailed fox companion began to allow sleep to take hold, leaving consciousness as the gondola carried them through Spagonia...and beyond

SPLASH!

WOOSH!

Millie opened her eyes to find her partner gone. In fact, wiping her eyes, she found the sun high above, and instead of the romantic, evening cityscape, she was in a forested area, traveling down the river at a substantially greater speed than she did back in Spagonia. The water was rough, and boulders protruded from the ever-decreasing depth of the river which was rapidly approaching a waterfall.

Millie frantically peered around the boat but was unable to find Honey. Finally, after hearing some splashing behind the gondola, she peered over the edge of the boat to find Honey struggling to keep her head above water.

“We’ve gotta get on land!” Millie called as she lowered a hand to Honey, who gladly clasped onto it, allowing the fox to pull her up. As Honey coughed up river water, Millie reached for the ore and tried using it to lower their speed, but the jagged rocks caused it to crack in half.

The two turned to find the waterfall rapidly approaching, gasping at the sight.

“Honey, take my hand!” Millie insisted. Without hesitation, Honey did as she was told, her gloved hand clasping Millie’s own, and just as the gondola began its descent down the waterfall, Millie jumped in the air, spinning her rotary namesakes to keep them afloat and out of harm’s way.

“Are you alright?” Millie asked, peering down below.

“Y-yeah…” Honey replied, water dripping from her soaked red dress as she remained dangling over the waterfall.

“Okay, let’s just get back on land.”

“Agreed!”

Finding a clearing near the river, the two landed safely. Nobody was around, save for some lone wildlife and the local flora. As they squeezed out the excess moisture from their dresses, the two frantically checked their pockets, relieved to find the rings still within.

“Well, there’s no better time than now,” thought Millie.

“If I don’t do this now, I won’t do it at all,” Honey concluded.

And so, the two lovers simultaneously got down on one knee and procured a ring gift box, opening it up with a single hand to display to their partner.

“Will you marry me?”

Of course, they were so caught up in the act that they only processed, after popping the question, that they, in fact, proposed to each other simultaneously.

“Have you…been trying to propose to me this entire time?” Millie asked, her muzzle turning red.

“Were you…trying to propose as well?” Honey asked in return.

Their dazed, confused expressions gave way to ones of happy delight as soon as they realized exactly what went down: they were both, in their own way, trying to pop the question, only to end up, through sheer happenstance, proposing to each other in, perhaps, the least romantic situation imaginable: totally drenched after nearly surviving a waterfall…

…and they would have it no other way.

The two lovers, with joyous tears in their eyes, shared a long hug followed by a kiss on the lips.

“So…I take it that’s a yes?” Honey asked with a smirk.

“Oh, shut up, you,” Millie replied before assertively reaching in for a kiss. Honey didn’t complain, however, allowing her fiancée to wrap her arms around her and continue this long kiss.

Of course, good things must always come to an end, and upon the conclusion of this proposal-sealing embrace, the reality of their current situation came rushing back: they were stranded along a river with no boat and wet clothes.

Honey saw the concern in Millie’s face as the young fox looked toward the sky, calculating how far she’d be able to carry her fiancée before requiring a break. The yellow cat simply took the fox’s new engagement ring and slipped it on her ring finger. Millie peered down at her hand, and the ring which fit comfortably on her finger, and simply cracked a smile.

“As far as I’m concerned,” Millie declared, “when I’m with you, I have no care in the world. Now…” Millie smirked as she pulled Honey’s ring from its box and slipped it on her finger too. The ring was a perfect fit, and Honey’s eyes glistened at the sight.

The two shared one final embrace, and one final kiss, before the young fox hopped in the air, activated her rotary namesakes, and reached her arm down for her wife-to-be to grab hold. Honey gladly accepted, and before they knew it, the two were flying high over the river, making their way back home…

…to the start of a new adventure.
