Work Text:

The hot summer sun beat down on the two boys sitting on the gravel. Yoshiki took a bite of his ice cream, it was refreshing, it dripped onto the road, he looked over at hikaru, it wasn't truly hikaru but it was close enough, his face was covered in sweat, as Yoshiki watched as he ate his popsicle, his face almost had a delayed reaction, it took a second for Hikaru to taste it. "Thanks for buying this." Despite this monster telling him, despite Yoshiki finding Hikaru's lifeless body he felt a sort of almost comfort in the presence of this thing, every night he would lay in bed and wish he went up to that mountain sooner. That he didn't just leave Hikaru on that mountain, that he stopped Hikaru from going at all. 'Hikaru' looked like the one Yoshiki had known his entire life but it acted differently, Hikaru would fall asleep during movies, unless it had constant action, he was unaware of Yoshiki he always walked one step farther away than needed, he never noticed how Yoshiki saw him. 'Hikaru' was entranced by life, he watched everything with rapture, he was too close all the time, he always questioned Yoshiki, in a way saw him more than the real one had.

"Oh yea, no problem." 'Hikaru' said like his mind was one step behind; it was probably just the heat. Yoshiki kicked a pebble to keep that orange coat out of his mind. He licked his ice cream cone, it tasted good, light and sweet like a fruit. Yoshiki ran a hand through his hair, he needed to cut it, it was getting too long. "I don't think I asked ya this but what's your favorite color? You, not him." Yoshiki asked and held the rapidly melting cone, the ice cream turning to liquid and sticking onto his hand. "Blue." He replied, Yoshiki chuckled with a bitterness, the exact opposite of the real one.

Yoshiki looked down at the curb and he saw 'hikaru's' insides leaking out of his hand, he looked back up at the boy, he looked anxious. "What's wrong?" Yoshiki asked, fear invaded his voice, he remembered all the marks 'Hikaru' had caused.

Hikaru finished his popsicle and licked his lips, more like a animal than a human. "I dunno." His voice was obvious, it was a lie. Yoshiki watched his face again, it wasn't leaking yet, there wasn't anyone here, it would've been fine; Yoshiki was just worried Hikaru would lose control.

"Are you gonna leave, or tryna kill me?" Hikaru asked his voice soft, scared and all Yoshiki could hear was the real Hikaru, he missed him, he wanted to sob, but he had 'Hikaru.' He dropped the ice-cream onto the road, it splattered, and hit the bottom of his pants, he hugged 'Hikaru' he felt the slimy insides of 'Hikaru' hold his back, it was like a fish, and spoiled food. He felt it slowly creep off his hand and replaced with a human one.

"I'm not sure what I feel for ya, but I don't wanna lose ya." 'Hikaru' said, his voice quivering, on the verge of tears like a human toddler. "I ain't gonna leave." Yoshiki said as his head was resting on 'Hikaru's' neck, it was warm and sweaty, like a clam. Yoshiki raised his hand and ruffled 'Hikaru's' hair, it was soft like Hikaru's though there was no reason why it would change. He lifted his head, "Could you touch...inside me?" 'Hikaru' asked suddenly, Yoshiki looked at the boy and wondered why he asked that. He must've looked like a deer. "No!" He took a sharp breath his ears pink. "I mean, why would you even ask that?" He wondered aloud.

'Hikaru' shrugged, a fake smile on his face, it was strained like it was just muscles moving and not a human action, it looked real on the real one. "I guess it's like a human hug." Yoshiki shook his head, his eyebrows furrowed in confusion, his hand gripping the curb.

"No. It's slimy and not human, it's cold like Hikaru was." He gagged, he felt like puking when he imagined the real Hikaru, with his orange coat, the branches and leaves surrounding him almost like a burial. He should've stopped Hikaru from taking one single step onto that mountain but he never did. He slammed his fist against the concrete, he wanted, needed Hikaru back. How he smiled with his soul not his muscles, how he would snore, how he would laugh. 'Hikaru's' breathing was just in sync like a clock, when 'Hikaru' laughed it was a delayed reaction like he was catching up on how he should've reacted, the only thing that feels real is how he felt for him, but did Hikaru ever feel whatever it felt too?

Yoshiki pulled the bone of Hikaru out of his shirt pocket and rolled it around between his fingers, 'Hikaru' trusted him with his life, why? Yoshiki was human, 'Hikaru' was...whatever he was. Yoshiki wouldn't leave, even if he wanted to. He looked up at Hikaru, the boy looked apologetic, and if Yoshiki wasn't hyper focused on everything about him it'd look completely human, and he realized in that moment some of it was human.

"I'm sorry." They both said and continued in limbo.
