Work Text:
Kim is just a side character in the series. Though, his story did bring the wish for more from Kim.
When I first watched the series, the introduction of Kim almost made him feel like a villain in the story, in my eyes, it seemed as if he was going to get in the way of Kinn and Porsche’s relationship. Now after watching it over 3 times, probably around 5, and reading hundreds of fanfics of Kim and Porchay to get over the overwhelming breakup between them, to me Kim is ultimately someone with walls too high, wishes to protect everyone that matters to him, and is willing to sacrifice himself.
Kim, of course finds Porsche to be suspicious, and wishing to protect his dear brothers, he digs into Porsche’s background. He went as far as to befriend Porchay and ultimately ending up falling in love with him. Yet instead of staying with Porchay, he says words so simple yet hard hitting that in the end he walks away with Porchay crying at the door. Kim was happy to be WIK in Porchay’s eyes, staying outside of the compound. However once Porchay learns of the other side of Kim, it wasn’t Porchay who breaks it off, it was Kim.
Yet, in a way Kim never let go, he said his goodbyes in hopes to protect Porchay, yet he wasn’t ever able to get over his love for him. Kim doesn’t like speaking the truth, he hides it in lies to keep both an advantage and for safety. He won’t tell Porchay he loved him, instead he makes him believe that the things that happened was all an act, all in the effort to protect Porchay.
Kim’s inital effort to look into Porsche, his choice of leaving Porchay, shows his evident love and self sacrificing personality for those he love. He looks into Porsche to keep his brothers safe, he leaves Porchay in hopes to keep him safe.
Everything possibly because of his childhood. Though I won’t say I remember it all, and know it all; the walls he built and wish to protect is because of the events of his past. I remember his mother dying, I imagine Kim feeling powerless. Tankhun was also kidnapped at a young age, Kim younger. Possibly fear of loosing those he loves built by these events. Though he seems to avoid Tankhun, it’s obvious he still cares for both his brothers.
Kim was raised to be a weapon, which builds more and more walls, he seen death throughout his childhood, in ways he never had a childhood at all. His father’s shitty actions built a character who is too afraid to step past the wall he built, he fears his dad would hurt those close to him especially Porchay.
In the end, even though Kim tried to protect Porchay from the mafia life, Porsche’s relationship with Kinn ultimately reels Porchay in to the harsh world. Though, perhaps the days could go back to how it was when Porchay only knew Kim as WIK and not Khimhant, Kim would never show Porchay as a weakness to his father, even if he dies, I think he would believe what harm is done, is done. Porchay already believes Kim’s actions weren’t real, and Kim won’t try to make it up. Kim still protects Porchay from the outside, watching over him without engaging with Porchay. If he comes too close, he believes he will hurt Porchay, if he is too far, he believes someone else will.
Kim is traumatized, his trust broken, yet he still has a heart. Kim is a child masked by an adult murder weapon, intelligent and afraid. He’s a lot to break down, probably missed a lot, possibly more to say about him based on the novel that I’ll never touch. But Kim is still human and going through too much.
Well, thanks for reading my rant. I’m too engulfed by fanfics that some details may be wrong, I like debates so please feel free in the comments. I like Kim’s character, it really shows desperation and fear. I like the way Kim’s character reflects his whole life everything incapsulated into a few words that hold too much. So again, thank you for reading and have a great day. c:
