These mf trains

Summary:

You and Nanami both work the most boring office jobs on the market, and commute to work, in opposite directions. That means, when you want to have an at-home date night after work, it’s a pain in the ass

This is my first venture into writing for JJK, and therefore also my first time writing for Nanami. I was going to keep this one for myself as a practice work.. then I realised today was his birthday so I figured - what the hell, why not?

Work Text:

You did not love your job. If anything, it should be classed as a miracle that you didn’t entirely loathe your job. Just another crappy 9 - 5 in a stuffy office being paid just barely enough to get by, but it did pay and that was all you needed it to do. You didn’t need to like your job, you needed to survive. Your job paid you enough to cover bills, food, and travel, and then you had enough left over to have date nights with your boyfriend Nanami. The issue with those date nights was the aforementioned travel.

Both of you had to commute to work, taking the train to do so, and that wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the fact that you both had to commute for an hour, in opposite directions. No cute meeting up to take the train together, no picking the other up if one of you finishes early for the day, no quickly going home to change for an early dinner reservation. It was a small issue in the grand scheme of things, but it seriously pissed you off.

You sat on the train, once again thinking about how annoying the need to commute so far was, tapping at your phone as you absently scrolled through social media, looking at the life milestones your old classmates were hitting. Weddings, babies, promotions, houses - and you were still in that same entry level position you’d entered two years ago. You didn’t need more than that, even if a small amount of jealousy angrily boiled in your stomach, insisting that you deserved better, that you were just as good as them. But you didn’t need all those things to be just as good as them, and you knew that.

It was easy to keep that in mind whenever you pushed open your apartment door to greet your boyfriend, who was always home just before you because his train arrived at the station closer to the end of his work day than yours did. You hung your coat and kicked off your shoes, then closed the space between you both, wrapping your arms around his waist from behind.
“What’s the plan for tonight?” You asked, pressing a kiss against his shoulder.
“I’m cooking some pasta for us both, and then I thought we could watch a movie. You can pick something while I finish dinner.” Nanami replied, and you nodded easily. You pressed another quick kiss to his cheek before disappearing into your shared bedroom to change into some lounging clothes before settling on the sofa with TV remove in hand. You flicked through the various options before settling on your favourite, as you often did.

“I should’ve known.” Nanami lightly teased as he padded over, setting a plate on the arm of the sofa beside you, then placed his own on the coffee table. He disappeared briefly before returning from the kitchen once again with drinks for you both, so you wouldn’t need to get up during the movie.
“You don’t mind watching it again?” You asked, lifting your plate into your lap carefully.
“I don’t, as long as it makes you happy.” He gently assured you, and you couldn’t help beaming at him. It did make you happy, but nothing could make you as happy as he did.
“I love you, you know that?”
“You might have mentioned it once or twice, yes. I love you too, dear.” He replied easily, taking his own plate in hand to begin eating his meal as you pressed play on the movie. You’d let him pick the next one.
