“It’s amazing,” he says, not fully intending to say it out loud, “what you do.”
“I don’t know about amazing,” she smirks, disengaging the torch and taking off her mask. “More like… haphazard.”
She’s not wrong— she’s spent the past week welding scrap metal to ships and structures in disrepair, helping to rebuild as many sources of shelter as possible.
He’s spent the last week watching her.
He wonders if he should be doing more; there’s always more to be done in San Ramos.
“Hand me my water?”
He smiles and obliges.
Then again, this job is pretty damn important.
