Summary
Narcissa’s breath caught as she rose slowly and approached the window. She opened a pane with shaking fingers and allowed the owl entry. It landed on the back of her chair and she removed the scroll.
She didn’t open it right away. Her heart pounded in her ears. A part of her didn’t want to know. After all, hadn’t she wished this into existence? Hadn’t she whispered in some cold part of her heart that it would be better if he never came home?
That it was what he deserved.
She broke the seal. Her eyes skimmed the first few lines and the world tilted sideways.
She dropped the letter. It floated to the floor. She didn’t feel it fall. She didn’t hear it flutter to the ground.
What she did hear — what ripped its way from her throat — was a scream so raw and painful that it fractured the air.
