“Don’t you get tired of fighting me?” the demon king asked.
The hero stared at him, dumbstruck. What a stupid question to ask!
“Of course I do. You keep being reincarnated, trying to take over the kingdom.”
The demon king smiled wryly. “And you keep being reincarnated to kill me again and again. You’re tired, of course. But so am I. So let’s say we make a little wager instead.”
The hero wasn’t sure she liked where this offer was going. “And what kind of wager would that be?”
The demon king’s smile grew more than the hero had ever seen it before. The emotion behind it, however, was unknown. Malice, most likely. But one deeper than she’d ever experienced before. Hate as well, perhaps.
And that was why the demon king’s next words surprised the hero so much.
“Then marry me. Keep me in check, and I’ll hold myself back.”
“Why?” she demanded.
“Because I’m too tired to keep fighting you, so let’s try something else instead.”
