Ready for a Bumpy Journey (1998)

Summary:

July 14, 1998, Woodland, Manitoba, Canada

Bear helps Franklin's parents surprise him with a party

Work Text:

The sun shines brightly over Woodland, Manitoba, but a tiny cloud still hangs over Franklin's head. His seventh birthday is here, but the thought of a plain party at home makes his shell feel heavy. He sits on his porch swing, kicking his feet, a sigh escaping his lips. He misses the big plans for Tamarack Point, the thrilling rides, the splashing water slides, and the challenging mini-golf.

Suddenly, Bear bounds up the steps, a huge, mischievous grin on his face. "Franklin! Come on! Your mom and dad and I have a surprise!"

Franklin blinks, curiosity nudging away his gloom. Bear tugs his arm, and Franklin follows, his parents and Harriet trailing behind, all beaming. They lead him around the house, past the familiar garden, and then… Franklin gasps.

Before him, his own backyard has transformed into a miniature wonderland! A vibrant banner stretches across two trees, proclaiming, "Welcome to Turtle Point!"

A small, inflatable pool, much bigger than his wading pool, gleams in the sun, a makeshift slide fashioned from a smooth, wide plank leading right into it. Further back, a colorful mini-golf course, complete with tiny windmills and tunnels made from cardboard boxes, winds through the grass. There’s even a "ride": a sturdy wagon decorated with streamers, pulled by his dad, ready for a bumpy journey.

"Happy Birthday, Franklin!" everyone shouts.

Franklin's eyes widen, sparkling with pure, unadulterated joy. He spins around, looking at Bear, who just grins, his eyes twinkling. Bear knew. Bear helped.

Soon, the doorbell rings, and his friends pour in: Goose, Rabbit, Fox, Snail, Beaver, Otter, and Badger. Their excited chatter fills the air.

They rush to the water slide, shrieking with delight as they splash into the cool water. Franklin, with Bear by his side, takes the first swing at the mini-golf ball, a huge smile plastered on his face. The "boring" home party is the most amazing party ever. Bear gives him a high-five, a silent promise of endless fun, and Franklin knows this is the best birthday gift of all.
