Work Text:

In the quiet hours before dawn, the Citadel of Light held its breath.

The air shimmered with warmth, and yet he felt cold.

Shadow Milk Cookie stood beneath the canopy of golden-glass windows, where the morning sun had not yet dared to enter. He remained a silhouette in the sacred halls, still, watching.
Across the garden, Pure Vanilla Cookie tended to a sprig of luminous blue bellflowers, his back turned.
So delicate, so impossibly kind.
So far from him.
Shadow Milk Cookie didn’t belong here—not among the bloom and warmth, not in this sanctum carved from mercy and healing. He belongs back in his cold, empty Spire, that lay hidden where no one can find. Everyone fears him, as the Beast of Deceit, one of the five dangerous Beast Cookies.

Well, everyone, except for Pure Vanilla. Shadow Milk would linger in hallways, blend into shadows, watching the way Pure Vanilla’s light bleed into every corner of the enchanting and warm castle, and rolled his eyes. “Pathetic thing…”, he would murmur to himself.

But there’s something else than that. Jealousy. He hates how his chest just tightens when the healer laughed softly at something Herb Cookie said. Hated the pang of jealousy when he’d share gentle touches with the others. Hated the way his own heart cracked each time their eyes met—and Pure Vanilla looked at him as though he understood.

But Pure Vanilla never said anything. Never confronted him. Never asked why Shadow Milk stood outside his chamber each night, cloaked in silence and longing.

Shadow Milk Cookie didn’t know what answer he would give, even if he had.

—— . . . . . —— . . . . . ——

Dark Enchantress Cookie isn’t gone. In fact, she is coming back, getting stronger every day. The great Kingdoms are in danger, and their leaders are forced to step up to protect their citizens…

—— . . . . . —— . . . . . ——

Their closeness grew slowly, like moss up an old stone.

Fingers brushing when passing hallways, even though it’s accidental. Long silences beneath the moon, when no words were needed. Pure Vanilla has long known that Shadow Milk is watching him silently, but never tried to get rid of him. Instead, the healer let him stay… But they never spoke of the tension.
Never let it become real.

Until the battle came.

—— . . . . . —— . . . . . ——

The Dark Flour Empire surged once more, this time toward the heart of the kingdom. Pure Vanilla Cookie gathered his forces, his resolve soft but unbreakable.

“You shouldn’t come,” he told Shadow Milk, his voice low. “You don’t have to be here.”

“I have never done anything for you,” Shadow Milk snapped. “And you… You think the world owes you for your gentleness. You think kindness is a sword.”

“It is,” Pure Vanilla replied. “And I will wield it until I can’t.”

There was silence between them, brittle and sharp.
Then, quietly: “Why won’t you let me in?” Pure Vanilla asked. “Why do you run from every moment that could be… more?”
Shadow Milk looked away.

Because if I let you in, I will fall.
And I don’t deserve to fall into the light.

—— . . . . . —— . . . . . ——

The final battle was wreathed in flames.
The field was lost.
Pure Vanilla Cookie stood alone on the ridge, golden staff held like a beacon. His light cut through the darkness—but it was flickering, fading.

A sickening sound.

An arrow, fired by one of Dark Enchantress’s subjects, impaled him.

The king has fallen.

Shadow Milk found him there, blood seeping from a wound across his chest, dyeing his once white robes a sick color of red, that only seemed to spread.

“You came,” Pure Vanilla whispered.
Shadow Milk knelt beside him, cradled him with trembling hands.
“I always come too late.”

“No.” Pure Vanilla smiled faintly, his hand reaching up to touch the other’s face. “You came when it mattered.”
Their foreheads touched. A breath passed between them. So much unsaid. So much felt.
“Tell me,” Pure Vanilla said, voice faint. “Before I go… Was it real? This?”

Shadow Milk Cookie closed his eyes, pressing his lips against Pure Vanilla’s temple.
“It was all I ever had.”

The light faded.
And Shadow Milk remained, alone, cradling the one who had loved him without ever demanding love in return, painfully watching him crumble in his arms.

EPILOGUE
Some say the fields still bear his shadow, kneeling in eternal vigil.

Others say he vanished into the dark, carrying a shard of light in his chest.

But those who pass through the Temple of Light can see it, carved in quiet letters beneath the garden where the Sleeping Vanilla Orchids grow:

In shadows, I watched you.
In silence, I loved you.
In light, you let me go.

Notes:

I’m so sorry I don’t know why I wrote this I’m very sorry. I wasn’t sleeping properly so I wrote this monstrosity. Please forgive me dear Shadow Milk and Pure Vanilla fans.
