Work Text:

As Jiang Cheng stood rooted in his spot, time seemed to stretch and contract in an uneven rhythm, like the slow ticking of a clock that had just seen its springs wound too tight. He could hardly breathe as he watched Nie Huaisang approach, his presence radiating a gentle confidence that both soothed and stirred Jiang Cheng’s heart.

“Nie Huaisang!” he finally managed to call out, his voice wavering just slightly.

“Jiang Cheng!” Nie Huaisang replied, his smile brightening the space between them like the first light of dawn breaking through a heavy fog. The sound of Jiang Cheng’s name on his lips felt like music, each syllable perfectly crafted.

Jiang Cheng stepped forward, trying to mirror that effortless ease. He gestured to the entrance. It had grand archway adorned with delicate carvings of lotus flowers. “Welcome to Lotus Pier. I hope it’s...up to your standards,” he said, the last part tumbling out faster than he intended. Why did he have to sound so formal? It was just tea!

“It’s beautiful,” Nie Huaisang said, brushing his fingers over one of the carvings, eyes gleaming with genuine appreciation. “I’ve only seen such craftsmanship in books.” The way he spoke, like he was sharing an amusing secret, released some of the tension clenching Jiang Cheng’s heart.

With a slight chuckle, Jiang Cheng motioned him inside. “Then let’s not keep you in suspense any longer. I’ve prepared some tea. Hopefully, it’s not as rough as my training.” He tried for a grin, but his nerves were still bubbling just beneath the surface.

Once inside, the room was bathed in warm light, the natural glow of the sun illuminating the smiles shared between them. Jiang Cheng poured the tea with care, each movement deliberate, a stark contrast to how his mind raced with possibilities, stories he could tell, jokes that might land, and ideas that might spark laughter.

“I have something to show you,” Nie Huaisang said, his eyes sparkling with excitement as he pulled a small, intricately painted box from his satchel. “It’s just something I picked up during the ride here. I thought you might appreciate it.”

Curiosity ignited within Jiang Cheng as he leaned closer, exchanging the warm air heavy with the scent of tea for the cool breath of surprise. “What is it?” he asked excitedly.

Nie Huaisang carefully opened the box to reveal a stunning array of delicate jade figurines, each one reflecting the sunlight in a kaleidoscope of greens and whites. “They symbolize good fortune,” he explained, his voice soft. “And they say when you gift them, the receiver gains a little blessing.”

For a moment, the world outside disintegrated. Jiang Cheng leaned in closer, because here, nestled in this unexpected camaraderie, he found a sense of comfort he hadn’t anticipated. The figurines became silent witnesses to a bond beginning to weave. “This...this is amazing,” Jiang Cheng breathed out, a genuine smile breaking free as he levied the weight of his worries into the laughter that bubbled up between them. “I can see why everyone adores you.”

Nie Huaisang’s cheeks flushed a deeper shade, but his grin only widened. “It’s just the luck of the draw, really,” he deflected, but Jiang Cheng saw through the modesty shimmering in his eyes.

Outside, the sun continued its steady descent, casting a golden hue across the waters of Lotus Pier, and inside, Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang lost themselves in the laughter and stories that flowed as freely as the tea. Time slipped away unnoticed, each sip creating a new memory, each shared glance igniting a flicker of something..they didn’t fully understand yet but hoped to explore together.

And amidst the sounds of clinking cups and playful banter, as the shadows lengthened, they both sensed that this was just the beginning of a blossom yet to unfold, bright and full of promise, much like the lotus flowers that adorned their surroundings.

The gentle evening breeze rustled the leaves outside, carrying with it the sweet scent of blooming lotus flowers. Jiang Cheng leaned back in his chair, his heart racing in a way that felt entirely new, like the first day of studying in the Cloud Recesses when everything was fresh and alive with possibilities. It was as if the world around him had transformed into a story waiting to be written, each word a thread connecting him to Nie Huaisang.

“So, what else do you like to do when you’re not being showered with compliments for your excellent tea-making skills?” Jiang Cheng asked, attempting to lighten the mood as he absently traced the delicate patterns on the table’s surface. His fingers danced over the grooves, like he was tapping out a melody in search of rhythm.

Nie Huaisang grinned, his cheeks still slightly flushed from their earlier exchange. “Well, aside from bothering my brother and expanding my collection of fascinating trinkets, I have a deep fascination with birds. It’s amazing how they can fly so freely, exploring vast skies without any restrictions. Each one has its own unique song and story, and watching them can feel like witnessing little adventures unfold right before my eyes.” His eyes sparkled with enthusiasm, and Jiang Cheng couldn’t help but imagine all the intriguing stories they could share about the different birds and their journeys.

“It must be nice,” Jiang Cheng replied, feeling a twinge of envy. “I often feel like I’m stuck in one place, like I can’t see beyond the boundaries I’ve created for myself.” His voice softened, revealing a vulnerability he usually kept hidden, like a book with pages tightly bound.

“Sometimes, it’s not about the place but the person you’re with,” Nie Huaisang said, leaning in slightly, as if sharing a secret. “Having someone to share those little adventures with like, watching birds take flight. It makes all the difference, don’t you think?” His words wrapped around Jiang Cheng like a warm blanket on a chilly night.

A shiver ran down Jiang Cheng’s spine, igniting a spark of hope within him. It was as if Nie Huaisang was holding up a mirror that reflected everything he felt deep down but struggled to articulate. “Yeah, I think you’re right,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady, not wanting to break the delicate spell they had woven together.

The stars twinkled above them, their soft glow reminding Jiang Cheng of ancient tales he’d often heard. They seemed to beam down blessings on the budding connection between them. For a moment, he wished he could hold onto this feeling forever, like a precious trinket kept safe in a box.

“Do you ever think about what you want to do in the future?” Jiang Cheng asked, curiosity bubbling up again as he leaned forward, focusing on Nie Huaisang’s glowing face.

“Honestly, I want to experience as much as I can,” Nie Huaisang replied, his tone serious yet filled with warmth. “Life is too short to stay locked in one spot. My brother might have his plans, but I think I’d rather dance between paths, exploring what makes my heart race, what makes me feel alive.” He paused, his expression thoughtful. “What about you?”

Jiang Cheng hesitated, the weight of the question pressing on his chest. “I’ve always felt I should follow a specific path, but... the more I talk with you, the more I want to break away from that mold, to discover who I am beyond just expectations.” He met Nie Huaisang’s gaze, feeling a surge of determination. “Maybe I want to carve my own path, one that feels right for me. While still becoming Sect Leader, of course.” Jiang Cheng lets out a small chuckle.

“Then let’s carve them together,” Nie Huaisang said with a wide smile, his voice filled with excitement. “We can be like the lotus flowers rooted but reaching for the sky, blooming through the muck!” His metaphor was whimsical yet oddly comforting, grounding Jiang Cheng in the moment.

Together, they laughed, the sound blending with the soft rustling of leaves outside and the gentle lapping of the water against the pier. Jiang Cheng felt a shift within him, like the first rays of dawn breaking through the darkness. It was exhilarating to think of having someone beside him, someone who could help him navigate the wild terrain of life and all its mysteries.

As they wrapped up their evening, the conversations began to drift lazily into gentle silences filled with unspoken promises. The shadows danced softly around them as lanterns flickered to life, casting warm, inviting glows that danced along the walls of Lotus Pier.

Eventually, Jiang Cheng took a deep breath, grateful for the time spent with Nie Huaisang, who had somehow turned a typical day into something extraordinary. He knew tonight was just the beginning of a journey. They would continue to explore the depths of their friendship, chasing adventures and discovering pieces of themselves along the way.

And as his heart warmed at the thought, he realized that within this unexpected partnership, he had found a spark to begin writing his own story; one that was bright and full of endless possibilities, much like the stars twinkling above them.

Jiang Cheng stood under the night sky, the stars shimmering like unspoken dreams around them. He took a deep breath, the moment feeling both monumental and terrifying, before turning to Nie Huaisang. “Nie Huaisang,” he began, his voice slightly shaky. “There’s something I really need to tell you.”

“Jiang Cheng…” Nie Huaisang’s tone shifted, becoming more serious as he looked at him with a mixture of concern and curiosity. “What’s on your mind?”

Jiang Cheng felt his heart race as he pushed through the nerves. “You’ve changed my life in ways I didn’t expect. I think I’m falling for you. More than just a friend.”

The air seemed to hang for a moment, and Nie Huaisang stared at him, his eyes wide. “Wait, falling for me?” He stepped back slightly, an almost frantic look crossing his face. “This is a lot to take in, and I don’t know what to think right now.”

Jiang Cheng’s heart sank a little at the panic in Nie Huaisang’s expression. “I know it sounds sudden, but I’ve felt this way for a while now,” he said, trying to stay steady. “I just couldn’t keep it to myself anymore.”

Nie Huaisang’s hands fidgeted at his sides, his voice rising in anxiety. “But what about my brother? What if he finds out? He won’t approve of us being together. He already thinks I’m too carefree! I don’t want to be a burden, especially when you’ll soon be the leader of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect. There’s so much on your shoulders, and I don’t want to complicate things for you!”

Jiang Cheng felt a rush of frustration and concern. “You’re not a burden! You’re important to me. I want to share this with you! I want to share everything! Just because I’ll be the sect leader doesn’t mean I don’t want you by my side.”

Nie Huaisang looked down, biting his lip as he processed his swirling emotions. “But what if it ends badly? What if my brother gets mad? I don’t want to watch you struggle under pressure because of me.”

“Nie Huaisang,” Jiang Cheng said softly, taking a step closer to him. “I can’t promise that every day will be easy, but I do know that I’d rather face that uncertainty with you than without you. You make everything better for me, even during hard times.”

A moment of silence settled between them, the stars blinking down as if whispering their own encouragement. Nie Huaisang finally looked up, a flicker of determination shining in his eyes. “So, you really mean it? You really want me to be by your side, no matter what happens?”

“Yes,” Jiang Cheng replied, feeling a weight lift off his chest. “I want us to try.”

Nie Huaisang let out a shaky breath, a mix of relief and excitement washing over him. “Okay, then. Let’s do this. I’ll tackle my brother, and we’ll figure out the rest together. I guess… I want to be with you, too, Jiang Cheng. I’m willing to give this a shot.”

Jiang Cheng’s heart soared at the acceptance in Nie Huaisang’s voice. Underneath the starry sky, uncertainty still loomed ahead, but they stood together, ready to face whatever challenges comes their way; together.
