Chapter Text
It was during Weirdmageddon when the twins found out they weren't going to grow up together, They came to accept it, Dipper had wanted the opportunity to work with his hero, and despite her initial reaction when she found out, Mabel wanted to see Dipper happy. After all, they could still talk. They wanted to make it work, and they knew that they could do anything together!
Mabel sat on the bus, stroking her pet pig while thinking about her conversation with her brother. "Waddles," Mabel said to the pig, "Do you think this will work? With me and Dipper? I know he said we'd talk every day but I'm worried that we'll lose touch." Mabel asked the pig. She looked into Waddles' eyes and decided to take a quick nap on the bus ride to try and forget about everything. Eventually, the bus came to a stop, she walked out, bags and pig in tow, and waited for her dad to pick her up from the bus stop.
"Hey there kiddo!" Exclaimed Mr. Pines, who hugged his daughter when he saw her.
"Hi, dad," Mabel replied, hugging him back. She let go of the hug and backed up to look her dad in the eye. "What'd you do while I was gone?" Asked Mabel, while she handed her bags to her dad so he could put them in the trunk of the car.
"Me and your mom cleaned out the house, I have an awesome apartment that I wanna show you!" Mr. Pines exclaimed, his voice full of excitement. His eyes then darted down to Waddles. "Honey, what is that by your feet?" Asked Mr. Pines, gesturing to the pig.
"Oh! This is Waddles! He's my pet pig!" She excitedly told her dad, picking up the pig. She looked at herd ad's conflicted expression. "Dad?" Asked Mabel, wondering what he was thinking.
"Mabel, I don't think you can keep him...I'll have to talk to your mom about that." Said Mr. Pines.
Mabel’s expression darkened, before looking up at her dad. “Please?” She begged, she gave her best puppy-dog face, and saw her dad begin to crack.
“Fine!” Exclaimed Mr. Pines, “But your mom won’t be very happy about this.”
Mabel celebrated a small victory before getting in her dad’s car with Waddles.
The two drove for a few minutes, before pulling up outside of an apartment complex. “Here it is!” Exclaimed Mabel’s dad, while opening the car door for his daughter. “Luckily pets are allowed here. I have some birthday gifts for you!” Exclaimed the man, pulling his daughter inside. She saw two gift boxes on the kitchen table. “The right one is yours, I’m gonna send your brother’s out in the mail.” Said Mr. Pines.
Mabel opened the box to find some new craft supplies and a digital camera. “Thank you dad! I love them!” She said, hugging her dad, Mr. Pines hugged his daughter in return.
“Okay, you little gremlin, you gotta go to bed, you have school tomorrow. Said Mr. Pines, letting go of the hug, “Your school supplies are at your mom’s, so I’m going to go get them, you’ll be fine here, right?” Asked Mr. Pines.
“Yep! A-okay!” Said Mabel, saluting her dad. She waved goodbye to her dad before walking around the apartment. She went into a room with two beds, and with one letter on each pillow. Mabel walked to the bed with the pink blanket, which she assumed was her’s. She picked up the letter, reading it out loud. “Dear Mabel, I hope you had a fun time this summer and made lots of friends. I know you can make it through this school year because you’ll have your brother.” She paused, thinking about how she wouldn’t have her brother this school year, she then continued reading. “I love you so much and I can’t wait to watch you grow into your own person, 8th grade is going to be your year, I’m calling it!” Mabel checked if there was any writing left, there wasn’t.
Mabel set down the letter before eyeing the other bed, and the other letter. Mabel thought to herself “Reading other people’s mail is Illegal, but Grunkle stan said if there’s no cops around, anything’s legal.” Mabel unfolded the letter and read out loud. “Dear Dipper, I hope you learned so much during your time in Gravity Falls, I really hope you made a few friends along the way, I can’t wait to see you and your sister again! I know you’ll go so far with that brain of yours. But please, don’t forget about your family. I love you so much, -dad.” Mabel finished the letter and set it back on the pillow. “Waddles!” Mabel called out for her pig. Waddles came running in and jumped into Mabel’s lap, Mabel then laid down and fell asleep on her new bed.
A few hours later she was woken up with a blaring alarm, which meant it was the first day of school. She stood up and stepped into the bathroom to get ready. She brushed her teeth and put on her shooting star sweater with a purple skirt. “Dad! I’m gonna go wait for the bus!” She exclaimed before walking to the bus stop. She saw the bus pull up and stepped into the vehicle. She took a seat on an empty chair and looked out of the window. “Dipper would’ve been with me...” She thought to herself as the bus started moving.
A few minutes went by where Mabel sat alone, until she felt a tap on her shoulder. It was a boy who looked about her age. “Can I sit here?” Asked the boy. Mabel patted the seat next to her and turned to the boy.
“I’m mabel,” She said to the boy, reaching out her hand.
“James,” replied the brown haired boy, who shook her hand in return. “What grade are you in?” Asked James.
“Eighth, It feels weird.” Replied Mabel, while giggling. “What about you?” She asked the boy.
“Same here, and yeah, I didn’t really have many friends at my old school. So I wanted a fresh start.” Said James, while playing with his hair.
“I can be your friend!” Exclaimed Mabel, who turned to look at James. “I used to have my brother but he moved away because he’s really smart.”
James turned to look at her. “Well, for what it’s worth I think you seem really smart.” Replied James, who put his hand onto her’s.
“Wait, is he flirting with me?” Thought Mabel, the two just met, she knew if Dipper saw this he would have freaked out. “Wait, is he making fun of me?” Mabel continued with her train of thought before she felt the bus come to a stop.
“Well, we’re here, I hope I’ll see you later!” Said James, who got up to get into the school.
“Well, eighth grade, let’s do this.” Thought Mabel as she stepped into the school.
