Work Text:
“There's Amity.” Amity’s dad said, looking to the stairwell.
“Hi.” Luz said absentmindedly.
“Hey. You look nice.”
“Thanks. You look… wonderful.”
Amity blushed, “Thank you. Let’s get heading out before it starts-” Thunder roared outside as a few drops of rain turned into pounding on the roof. “-storming.”
“Well, didn't you say the rain’s been cooler lately?”
“Not cool enough to go out.” Amity sighed. “Well, shit. There goes our date plans.”
“Language.” Alador scolded.
“It's fine, we can find something else to do.”
“Yeah.” Amity looked away from the window. “Here, let's go up to my room.
After a moment Alador shouted, “Leave the door open!”
Once they got up to the room, Amity shut the door and leaned against it. “Titan.”
“At least he's trying?” Luz supplied.
Amity gave a small smile. “Yeah. I guess.”
Luz raises an eyebrow.
“He’s trying, he really is! But… he wasn't there for so long. I could probably count on one hand how many times he tried to connect with me before now. And I was fine! I learnt how to navigate the world on my own! Took a while to get there, but. I survived. I survived Odalia’s abuse. I survived being in a new world for months without knowing how or when I’ll get home. I figured it out!’
“Heck yeah you did.”
Amity laughed. “Yeah! I don't need to be taught how to live and have good morals. I don't need any ‘life lesson’ moments. But all he sees is parenting guides and what Eda and Darius and Raine and Camila do day-to-day. But I don't need that. I don't need a parent, I need a dad.” Amity lets out a small cry.
Luz comes over to give her a hug. “Sorry.”
“No, no. It’s fine.”
They sat there for a while, holding onto each other. The small cries turned into sobs which turned into heavy, quiet breaths. Luz grabbed her girlfriend's face, rubbing a finger across her cheek.
“Your eyeliner’s smudged.”
“Yeah.”
“You okay?”
Amity shrugged.
“Here, I’m going to get you some water, alright?”
“Okay. I’ll be here.” Amity moved from the door.
Luz left and carefully went down the steps. When she got to the kitchen, there was Alador, scribbling in a notebook.
“Hey, Mr. Blight.”
“Luz. Hello. Just call me Alador.”
“Okay, Alador. Where are the cups?”
“Upper cabinet, 3rd on the left. How are you and Amity doing?”
“Oh. Good. We’re doing good.”
“That’s good.” Alador let out a small laugh. “I’m trying to be better. I hope she knows that.”
“She does.”
“I’m hoping I can get custody of her and the twins. I’m fighting for it. I haven’t been there for them. I’m trying to be there now.”
“That’s a nice place to start.”
“I hope so. Amity’s a good kid. I know that much. Say, do you know her favorite food?”
“Her favorite food is pasta and eyeball sauce, but if you're talking dessert it’s fairy pies. In the human realm her favorite is spaghetti, and her favorite human dessert is those super-sweet store bought sugar cookies, or strawberry ice cream from the local creamery.”
“Oh. Do you think she’d like to bake a fairy pie with me?”
“I don’t know, it’s worth a shot.”
“Yeah. I feel like I have so much to catch up on.”
“Well, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is today.” Luz thought for a bit. “Guess that quote only makes sense in the human realm.”
Alador laughed. “I think I get it. Well, I shouldn't keep you too long, thanks for the help. Have fun talking about… Azuka?”
“Azura. You’re welcome.”
