Chapter Text
Oki doki! The time period for this first chapter is like late 2002 to early 2003.
Reigen hadn’t expected to be a father, especially not so young and Reigen definitely expected to at least know who the mother was. But here he was holding the baby that was left on his doorstep and reflecting on how this happened.
What could be said about early 2002? Other than the ongoing recession in Japan… Well Reigen had recently quit his salaryman job to pursue something new, buying out a small studio in the north of Seasoning city. As well as being in his early 20’s.
His past job as a salaryman never felt quite like the right fit for Reigen, but he was smart enough to handle all the accounting and needed the money to pay rent for his apartment so who was he really to complain. Reigen was overjoyed when he could finally get out of working there, though he was thankful for the work experience, all that time in accounting had taught him to manage his money well, so working at his next business no matter how tight the money got Reigen always had a way to get out of it. At least that’s what he always told himself.
So like many men in their early 20’s, Reigen was living his life to the fullest and anyway Reigen had always heard his mother say that "Your 20’s is your prime of life and you should always live your life to the fullest.” He may have been taking his mother’s saying a little too far sometimes but who really cared? Your 20’s was the prime time to make all kinds of stupid mistakes, so when night time came around and he strutted into a night club and spotted a pretty girl, you could bet your bottom dollar he was going to try and chat them up.
Most times he was unsuccessful but sometimes, he was triumphant, managing to persuade the pretty woman to come back to his apartment for the night… and the rest was history. This cycle happened a few times, Reigen never bothered to stay in contact, always feeling a small bit of guilt for, in a lack of better words, using them like that. Even with the guilt he still let the cycle continue, as everybody always said your 20’s was a time for making mistakes.
So on a cold February evening in 2003, when Reigen was walking home from his new psychic scam still not managing many customers, only to see a small baby wrapped in white cloth in a basket on his doorstep. It would’ve been and understatement to say he was surprised. His first thought was that someone had left this baby out to die and it had just happened to be on his front doorstep. Thought he soon changed his mind when he was a note in the basket.
The note read:
So you slimy little shit, you thought it would be fucking funny to brag about your amazing business just to bring me back to your bed for the night, and honestly I’m sort of thankful that you somehow managed to get me pregnant. Only because the consequences of your actions have come back to bite you in the ass.
No matter what you now have a daughter and I pray to god that you actually have the brain capacity to look after her well. In this basket I've left you: Her birth certificate that needs her name filled out basically immediately or you're gonna get fined, All her medical records and the rest of her legal documents, 1 other outfit and a hope that you will look after her well.
I have left her here unnamed, as I plan on never seeing her or you again, as you practically ruined my life, so what I want you to do is never call me and never try to find me ever again… Alright? You’ve already done enough damage… Please don't harm this girl anymore.
Emi
(P.S I looked on and found out your business is a fraud. The highest rating you’ve had so far is 3 stars, you jack-ass bastard.)
Well shit.
“Fuuuckkk” Reigen grumbled under his breath, before picking up the basket and bringing it inside his apartment. “I can’t just leave her outside” He mentally reasons with himself, he looked down at the small baby, now his small baby and a girl no less. Reigen sighs heavily, how was he going to raise a girl? He wasn’t a girl, clearly, the thought of even raising a child filled him with dread. This wasn’t supposed to happen, yet somehow it did? Reigen now sat at his small kitchen table, looking at the basket he had set on the floor beside him, hearing the soft coos from the newborn baby.
“Guess I gotta name ya before I get fined, that’s whatcha mama said” Reigen mutters more to himself then the baby. “Hmmph, I should probably call you something after me shouldn’t I? Would you like to be named after ‘The Greatest Psychic of The 21st Century’ huh?” The baby softly coos. “I’ll take that as a yes then”
Considering the seriousness of the situation Reigen seemed to be in a good mood and joking around, mostly because he was in shock and couldn’t understand the seriousness of the situation just yet.
Reigen got out a laptop and started researching baby girl names that started with R and after a while he had decided on a few names and headed off to bed, bringing the basket with his newborn daughter in it so he could keep an eye on her.
By the next morning he had a whittled the number of names to 3 and scribbled down on a piece of paper:
“Alright kid, I’ve got 3 potential names for you here, make a noise at the one you like the most ok? Oki Doki! Number 1. Ramie, it means beauty… and also tree branch”
The baby stays silent
“Alrighty you didn't like that one then… How about Number 2. Reika, it means actor and performer as well as singing”
The baby coos a little
“You like that one huh? Ok well we have one name left Number 3. Reien, this one’s the closest to my name so its my favourite.. It means beautiful and lovely… as well as plantations… on second thought I feel like this isn’t as good of a name as I first thought it was…”
The baby stays quiet again.
Reigen nervously laughs “Yea it’s probably for the best… Welp… that means that your name is Reika” he pauses before muttering with a softer tone “Welcome to the world little Reika”
“No matter what, it’s just you and me, I mean you're basically stuck with me now, though I promise to always keep you safe…” Though immediately after saying this his tone goes back to his usual chipper way “...Anyways we’ve got a lot of work to do, well I do, you’ve just gotta sit around and look cute all day huh?
And so with that Reigen got ready to start his usual day at his office now just looking over a baby and to him that wouldn’t be too hard as barely got any customers…
