Mamma Mia!

Summary:

Meg O’Cleirigh was excited to be cast as a lead role in the school’s musical… unfortunately for her, Dorian Merlinson was cast as her love interest.

Notes:

Hi! So if you’re seeing this and you haven’t read Queen of the Depths, just know you don’t actually have to know the story since it’s in a completely separate AU. If you have read Queen of the Depths, you should know that all the other random characters are from WIPs of mine!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Meg was no stranger to theater. She’d been in the ensemble for the past three years and, even though she was a senior, she didn’t expect anything different for this year’s musical. She was pleasantly surprised to see her name near the top of the list— she’d gotten Sophie.

She was not nearly as happy to see the name right below hers. Dorian Merlinson had gotten Sky.

Meg did her best not to engage with Dorian. Since her strengths didn’t lie in academia, she almost never had to deal with him outside of class. She’d taken honors classes, but only to appeal to colleges so she could get a scholarship for sports. Sadly, that meant she had to deal with Dorian in nearly all of her classes.

Dorian liked to cause problems where he could, and Meg couldn’t help but make them worse. He was constantly dragging her down, poking fun at her obvious ineptness. Meg got a special bit of joy in English class, though, when Dorian was consistently outdone by her best friend, Olivia.

Despite his occasional losses, Meg was still peeved to see him listed as her love interest. She fought her way away from the cast list to go find the director, Mrs. Gaheris.

“I’m sorry, Meg, but Dorian was the only boy left,” Mrs. Gaheris said.

“Put a girl in a wig! No, actually, cast Samantha! She said she’d cut her hair if you let her play Sky,” Meg argued.

“Samantha can look like Sky as much as she wants, but she won’t have a baritone,” chided Mrs. Gaheris. Meg scowled.

“Change the story, then! I’ve no problem with a lesbian Mamma Mia.”

Mrs. Gaheris gave Meg a pointed frown. “I don’t know how well that’d go over with the principal, Meg. If you want, you could campaign for genderbent casting in future musicals, but I’ve already given Dorian the part. You’re the one causing problems, so if we’re going to recast, we’ll need a new Sophie. Not a new Sky.”

Meg muttered an apology and left the theater.
