For Your Own Good

Summary:

Ojiro and Kaminari's friends lock them in a closet in the hopes they will confess their feelings.

MHA Rarepair Week Day 2: Forced Proximity

Notes:

This ship might actually be my favorite MHA ship, they are so underrated

Work Text:

As soon as he heard the click of the lock, Mashirao knew he was fucked. He should’ve known something was off when Hagakure said she wanted him to see something in a supply closet, of all places. When she opened the door, revealing Kaminari already trapped inside, his first thought should have been ‘this is a trap’ and not ‘I should go check on him’. Then he wouldn’t be in this predicament.

He should’ve stopped when he saw the other boy inside the closet instead of moving forward. He’d given her the perfect opportunity to shove him inside and slam the door. Of course, she also sent him flying right into the boy in question, who looked just as shocked as he did.

Even in the almost complete darkness, he could tell their faces were far too close together. Thank god it was so dark, or Kaminari would probably see just how red his face was. He didn’t know if it was better or worse that the other boy hadn’t said anything other than a startled yell when Ojiro was shoved inside with him.

“Sorry, Ojiro,” he heard Hagakure’s voice say through the now firmly locked door. “This is for your own good.”

Her voice startled him back to reality, and he quickly pulled himself away from Kaminari (at least as well as he could in the small closet), turning to face the door. He had to get out of here.

“Hagakure, this isn’t funny!” he yelled, trying the doorknob. Any hope she didn’t actually lock them vanished as it stayed firmly in place. “Let us out!”

The silence from the other side of the door was all he needed to know she was either long gone or had no plans to help him. He never should have told her about his stupid crush. Ever since she learned he liked Kaminari, she’d been cooking up all kinds of plans to get them together. Until now, they had all been mostly harmless.

“Damn it,” he muttered, taking a step back, trying to get a better look at the door with the little bit of light coming from underneath. Unfortunately, he completely forgot about the lack of space and his tail whacked right into Kaminari. He muttered a quick sorry as he turned back around, drawing it closer to his body.

“It’s okay, I like your tail,” Kaminari replied, with a big grin he could make out even in the darkness. He reached out and ran his fingers through the fluff at the end of it as he spoke, sending a whole new wave of panic through his brain. “I doubt they’ll be back to let us out for a while. Sero and Ashido were laughing way too hard when they shoved me in here.”

He was never going to survive this. He had a hard enough time staying focused when Kaminari played with his tail during class; being trapped in a tiny closet with him would be way worse. Thank goodness for the darkness keeping his face hidden. He could feel how red his face was.

“So you said Sero and Ashido locked you in here?” he asked, trying to drive the conversation away from his tail. The other boy's fingers were still running through the fluffy hairs at the end, and he needed to think about anything but that.

It did seem strange that it hadn’t been one of his friends when Hagakure had orchestrated this whole thing. He’d expected that the invisible girl got Kaminari too, or at least convinced Sato to help her. Koda made it clear he wanted nothing to do with her plans, but Sato had agreed with a few of the more harmless ones.

Once or twice, she’d asked him if she could ask Ashido for help when the two girls started dating, but he always said no. The pink girl was far too close to Kaminari and way too gossipy to risk her finding out about his crush. Had Hagakure finally broken and told her?

“Yeah, sorry you got roped into whatever dumb prank they’re pulling,” Kaminari explained, with a nervous chuckle. What reason did he have to be worried? Almost nothing scared him, well, other than when Aizawa collected homework he hadn’t done. Not even an angry Bakugo could shake him. “I guess Ashido must have roped Hagakure in.”

“Wait, this was Ashido’s idea?”

“I mean, I assume so. She comes up with all kinds of crazy things like this, it’s just normally with my help.”

Was Ashido also trying to push them together? If she was doing that, could it mean Kaminari liked him back? Was that why he’d seemed nervous about this? What he really needed right now was a second to just think things through clearly, but with their current situation, he could not get a coherent thought out of his brain. All he could think about was the lack of space and Kaminari’s hands still all over his tail.

“Can you please stop touching my tail?” he suddenly blurted out, the words coming out a little harsher than he meant.

Kaminari’s face fell as he let Mashirao’s tail fall from his grasp. That had definitely been the wrong move. Now he probably thought that he’d hated him playing with his tail the whole time. He didn’t want him to stop forever, just long enough for him to decide what to do next. He needed a way out of this that didn’t involve a totally embarrassing confession and hoping their friends would let them out.

“Sorry,” the other boy mumbled, his eyes searching for anywhere to look that wasn’t at Mashirao. He definitely messed up. “I guess I always just assumed you were fine with it. Bakugo was right, I should’ve asked. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”

“Wait, no, that’s not what I meant,” he tried to explain, feeling his tail twitch nervously behind him. “I do like it! I just can’t focus when you touch it, and I needed to think!”

From the way Kaminari’s eyes snapped back toward him when he spoke, he knew he’d said too much. If the other boy hadn’t noticed his crush before, he did now. He didn’t know what was worse: if he stopped touching his tail because he thought Mashirao hated it, or if he stopped because he found out about his crush. He really needed to start thinking before he said stuff. He was going to kill Hagakure when he got out.

“You like it when I touch your tail, but  can’t focus?” Kaminari asked quietly, but it felt like that wasn’t the only thing he wanted confirmation on. He could almost hear the other question, but he was in too deep to back out now.

“Yeah, my brain goes all fuzzy and I can’t think about anything else,” he admitted. There was no going back anymore. “I keep having to ask Hagakure for her notes, which aren’t very good, but it’s too embarrassing to ask anyone else.”

“Why not just ask me to stop?”

“I already told you. It’s because I like it.”

He could’ve sworn Kaminari had gotten a bit closer, but there was already so little space in the supply closet that it may have just been his imagination. He did, however, feel the other boy's fingers find their way back into the fluffy end of his tail. Something about that gave him a bit more confidence. After what Mashirao said, even he wasn’t dense enough not to pick up on his rather obvious crush. Maybe he should just go for it. Close the gap between them and just come clean.

As though Kaminari could read his mind, he moved closer, backing him into the door. Leaving the first hand on Mashirao’s tail, he brought the other up to cup the side of his face. He tried to speak, but for some reason, he couldn’t form any words.

“Ojiro, can I kiss you?” Kaminari whispered mere inches from his face. He wanted to say yes, but he didn’t trust himself to speak, so he just nodded.

Kaminari finally closed the gap between them, pressing their lips together. For a moment, it was a bit awkward as they both tried to lean into it, teeth clacking together, making their inexperience obvious. After a moment, the awkwardness dissipated as they both melted into it, taking it a little more slowly. Even though it was far from a perfect kiss, it felt like fireworks were going off in his mind. At least until an actual jolt of electricity was sent through his body, causing him to try to jump backwards. Unfortunately, with the door behind him, there was nowhere to go, so he just ended up slamming his head into the door

“Fuck sorry!” Kaminari yelled, also jumping backwards as he realized what he’d done. “I guess I lost control of my quirk.”

He couldn’t help but laugh. It hadn’t been too big of a shock, but he could feel a lot of his hair standing on end. Really, slamming it back into the door hurt more than the electricity anyway. This certainly made for an interesting first kiss. As he laughed, Kaminari soon joined in as he realized the other boy wasn’t mad.

When laughter died down, Mashirao finally remembered their predicament. They still didn’t have any way to get out of here. Their friends weren’t anywhere near them anymore, and if they called for help, that could mean anyone found them. He really didn’t want to attempt to explain their situation to a teacher. Breaking the door with his tail was also off the table because, although he could definitely do it, explaining damaged school property would be worse than explaining why they were in there. They would have detention for sure.

“While being trapped in here with you did turn out good,” he said, giving Kaminari a smile. “Any idea how we can get out? This isn’t exactly a comfortable closet.”

“Do you have your phone?” Kaminari suggested. “I would’ve used mine when they first locked me here, but it’s dead. “I was gonna ask you, but then I got a bit distracted.”

How had he not thought to use his phone to call for help before considering breaking down the door? Whatever part of his brain handled logical thinking had definitely shut off when Hagakure shut the door. He almost called Hagakure before remembering it was her who locked him there in the first place, so he opted to call Koda instead. Out of all his friends, he was the least likely to be involved.

“Hi Ojiro, where are you?” Koda’s voice asked from the other end as soon as he picked up. “I figured you would be back to the dorms by-”

But then he was abruptly cut off by what sounded like someone snatching the phone from his hand. There were a few seconds of muffled voices on the other end before a new voice spoke, sounding way too smug for her own good.

“I can’t believe you tried to call Koda for help,” Hagakure said, her mock offended tone making him roll his eyes. “I set up the perfect opportunity for you, and this is how you thank me?”

There was another muffled voice in the background, and he heard her laugh before she spoke again.

“Ok, Mina’s right. You should be thanking her,” she explained. “It was her idea, so no, I didn’t break my word and tell her.”

“Hagakure, are you going to come let us out or not?” he asked, when she finally stopped rambling. He wasn’t sure it was a good idea to tell her just how well the plan had worked. He would never hear the end of it.

“Did you quit being a chicken and tell him how you feel?”

Before he got the chance to answer, his phone was snatched out of his hand. Kaminari had swiped his phone and switched it to speaker, not even giving him time to respond. The light from the screen revealed his grin, and Mashirao already didn’t like where this was going.

“Hey Hagakure,” he started, his tone not helping with the worry about what he might say next. “Don’t worry, Mina’s plan worked. I kissed your best friend. Do you think you can let us out now?”

Yeah, he should have expected something like that. Something told him Kaminari and Hagakure were going to get along way too well and would be absolute chaos for him to deal with. If the squealing on the other end of the phone at his comment was anything to go off of Mina would also be helping them drive him crazy.

“Kaminari-”

“If we’re dating now, I think you should call me Denki,” the blonde boy cut in with a cheeky wink. Did he really feel the need to do this now, where it fueled the giggling he could now hear from Hagakure? He would definitely never stop hearing about this.

“We’ll be down there to let you out in a minute! Bye!” he heard Hagakure say, before the call disconnected. He took the phone back from Kaminari, no Denki, trying not to roll his eyes at her antics. Despite his insistence, none of her crazy plans would help; it seemed one of them really had. Maybe he did need to thank her.

Notes:

I love the idea of Hagakure appointing herself as her friend's matchmaker :)
