Work Text:

“Happy anniversary!” Tori’s eyes sparkled as she revealed a cake with edible gold flakes on it.

Hajime was touched that Tori had prepared something to celebrate their one-month relationship but also gold? Was that real gold?

She was freaked out about it in silence, her thoughts in disarray. It seemed terribly expensive, much more than she could ever repay Tori for. It just made her think that she and Tori really were different. Tori was used to these kinds of luxuries and Hajime could never give that to her.

Tori had taken note of this silence and deflated. “You don’t like it?” It took a few more seconds as Tori looked at Hajime and then back to the cake. “Oh. Is it too much?” Tori set the cake down on the table and rushed to Hajime’s side. She clasped Hajime’s hands.

“Um, I just thought that– you mean a lot to me and I just wanted to show you that. A regular cake wasn’t enough!” Tori fumbled with her words. “Sorry…”

Hajime exhaled and held Tori’s hands tighter. “No, no. You don’t have to apologize. I feel the same.” She peered at the cake briefly before meeting Tori’s eyes again. “It just took me by surprise.” That was a bit of a white lie.

Tori frowned, likely realizing that. She held Hajime’s hands to her face and nuzzled them. “I really do like you, you know?”

“Me too.” There was a lot left unsaid but Hajime was too scared to say anything else right now. Not the extent of her feelings for Tori. How she was always jealous when Tori talked to others. How anxious she was that Tori wouldn’t like her when she realized that Hajime was not the sweet, kind angel that her idol reputation gave her. All of her insecurities.

Tori broke the silence. “Should I put the cake away?” she asked.

Hajime shook her head. “It’s a lovely cake. Let’s have a slice.” She pulled her hands away from Tori and found it endearing how Tori had a flash of disappointment in her eyes from the lost contact. Hajime reached for a knife at the kitchen counter to cut the cake.

“Happy one-month anniversary,” she said as she neatly sliced the cake. She placed a slice on a plate on the table between them along with two spoons. Tori gave her a bright smile and Hajime naturally smiled back as they both made indents in the slice with their spoons and took a bite.
