Masquerade of the Guilty

Summary:

Although it probably wasn't long, it felt like forever before we made it to the abandoned building where Giran said the recruitment would be: the League of Villains headquarters. The man with silver hair led us inside, cigarette in hand. "So glad you could make it, Voodoo. Did the league finally pique your interest?"

"You could say that. Can we hurry this up?" I answer, annoyance lacing my voice. He obliges, staying silent as we're let up a flight of stairs.

To be honest, I don’t know how I feel towards the blonde striding next to me. She was… weird. Different than my original impression, at the very least. This girl didn't randomly kill people whenever she wanted - if that was the case, then she would have already slit my throat.

I just don't get it…

Or, after Toga tries and fails to kill an unsuspecting girl in a back alley, an unlikely friendship forms, and with it comes the chaos of being involved in something that that girl shouldn’t.

Chapter 1: Different

Notes:

Ok so. I have been working on this little project of mine since 2021 and I feel like if I don’t post at least SOME of it now then it will forever be lost to time. it’s rough at the beginning cause I had no other idea of how to start this, but I promise it gets better LOL

(This fic is still in the editing phase; the writing WILL get better I promise)

Chapter Text

"Careful about your next words, cause I won't hesitate to slice your neck wide open…” The psychopath behind me cooed. I struggle within her grasp, a thin blade pressed firmly against my throat. I knew I never should have taken a shortcut through the alleys.

Even though the sun shone brightly that day, the alleyway I was in was unsettlingly dark. My breath fogged my vision within the cold winter air. It was hard to see, half because of the lack of light, and half because of the hood over my head. For that reason and that reason alone, I am now stuck in this not-so-favorable situation.

I was walking to where the base was for the league of villains, aka the Kamino Ward. Giran, a trusted commissioner in the shadows, recommended for me to join their ranks, or to at least see what they were all about. I said that I would think about it, but soon after the interaction, it began to get harder to ignore the gossip surrounding them in the media. He gave me a date, so I thought I might check it out and see if they were worth my time, but more importantly, to see which rumors were true and false.

“I've been watching you for a couple months now, and might I say, you're quite intriguing~ i'm just glad I was able to finally catch you. Perfect timing, actually, because I was just on my way to the base. You might even be my tastiest crush yet~ kyahaha!" The girl behind me continued before pressing the knife a little harder against my throat.

I pause for a moment, before I make a look a defeat wash over my face. "Look, I have no idea who you are or what you want for me, but I can assure you were on the same side here! By the way you spoke, I can already tell you're some sort of villain, so... so please just put the knife down a-and we can talk!" I spoke, slight panic evident in my voice. Why didn't I think that others might be here in these graffiti littered alleyways as well? I'm such an idiot. Although, I wasn't actually panicking. It's not like I haven't been in dangerous situations before, but I could tell by the strength she had with the knife on my throat, it wouldn't have been long before it would break the skin.

“Ah, villain... what a debilitating word. I like to call myself a lover more than a fighter."

“Uh..ok, well I-I'm heading to some sort of base as well, see if they're worth my time or not, maybe we're heading to the same place? Where are you heading to?" I continue up my scaredy-cat act.

“I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be disclosing the location of the League of Villains base, but that is where I'm going! I heard Mr. Stainy was with them before he got captured and I want to be just like him! Hell, I wanna be the one that kills him!" She gushed. "So I'm seeing if they will recruit me as one of their own, so I can be one step closer to fulfilling one of my dreams," She sighed and giggled happily. It seemed like her ramblings about her idol made the psycho let down her guard; I felt the hold on the knife loosen a bit. It was a small difference, but it was there. I took that as my opportunity to have a good look at her, and to finally understand why her voice sounded so familiar to me.

I swiftly grabbed her right arm and twisted it, which made her drop the weapon in hand as I spin on my heel and grab her other wrist, disarming her and preventing her from reaching for any other item she might have on deck. She was a blonde with two messy buns attached to either side of her head, as well as impossibly even bangs. The psycho also had golden cat-like eyes, the longer I stared, the more unsettling it got.

"...What's your name?" I asked as I let go and continued walking, signaling her to follow by a wave of my hand. Quiet shuffling could be heard behind my back, but I sensed something wasn't right. I took a few more steps before abruptly swiveling around  on my heels to find the girl lunging towards me, pocket knife in hand. I sighed, hoping it would be a little more peaceful than this. I leap onto the wall on my side and land behind the girl as I shove one of my hands in my pocket, pulling out a small rag doll I carried along just in case. I'm now behind her as she stumbles to get her footing, probably not expecting me to jump out of her way so quickly. She spun around and was about to lunge once again, but I had activated my quirk before she had the chance. Her body then started to move at my will, making her body calm down before forcing her to walk next to me as we both began moving forward again. I then put the plastic doll back into my pocket and kept walking in that direction.

"Uh- well that was some first impression you made!" She said, snapping out of her quirk-induced trance. "The names Toga by the way, Himiko Toga! But just curious, how do you know I won't try and cut you still?" She introduced, darkening her voice on the last few words. She now walked next to me at her own will, and flipped out what sounded to be a pocket knife, probably the same one she used just some moments ago.

“You don't know what my quirk is, and if you're smart then you would have probably listened to my wording when I spoke. 'See if they're worth my time or not'? Yeah, no. I most likely sounded confident in my skills... orrrr like an overconfident prick, but either way that would mean my quirk is pretty damn good, right? So I suggest you put the pocket knife away before I make you put it away." I state blankly. She could tell I was being serious, so she reluctantly flipped it back and put it back to wherever the hell she got it from in the first place.

“I can already tell we're gonna be great friends. The name’s Voodoo." We make eye contact as I glanced at her, but before Toga could say anything in response, I smirked, winked at her, and looked back forward.

The other giggled as she hopped and skipped happily beside me. My words weren’t exactly lies, but they weren’t true either. To be honest, I don’t know how I feel towards the blonde striding next to me. I wouldn't normally try to befriend a person that attempted to kill me moments before, but she was… weird. Different than my original impression, at the very least. This girl didn't randomly kill people whenever she wanted, if that was the case then she would have already slit my throat.

I just don't get it…
