Work Text:
izuku and him had been in their favorite ramen restaurant for lunch. it was their first time having a 3-day break at the same time after a long while and they thought spending it together was the best idea.
they found this ramen place while they were patrolling together a few months ago and they were only able to visit it that day. their ramen was so good, katsuki swore he'd break his diet plan just to go there more often.
that moment was perfect, katsuki thought. it was raining outside at the time but the warmth of the place plus the soft lighting and the fact that it was only them and another couple at the other end of the resto made it so much better..
and the best spicy ramen bowl he's ever had too..
and izuku sitting in front of him with his cheeks tinted pink for insisting he tries the same ramen as katsuki..
katsuki was in love with izuku.. that he never denied. its been years since he'd realized it-- that very same day he gave the nerd his well-deserved suit 2 years ago. the way izuku looked at him, the way his smile brightened even more, the way izuku accepted his hand and they both soared through the sky side by side.
it was the dream.
for 2 years katsuki had never tried confessing to izuku, too scared to risk their friendship. at times he'd wonder if izuku felt the same, with the way the other would look at him in awe, or when he'd massage katsuki's hands after a long day of quirk overuse, or when he'd simply give katsuki a hug after every little thing katsuki would do for him (like cooking his favorite, or when folding his laundry)
"..because kacchan's the best!" the nerd would just say when he'd ask what the hugs were for.
"do you think they have milk?" katsuki was pulled from his thoughts when izuku asked, hissing, cheeks even redder now. "jeez, how do u eat this, kacchan, its just pain more than flavor now!"
katsuki couldnt really ask for more. whatever it was thats between him and the nerd at the moment was enough.
he shouldnt be too greedy.
but he'd do anything in the world for him.
even burn it all down.
the rest of their time in there was spent talking about what should they do for the rest of their 3-day break. time seemed to blur between them and they were pulled back to reality when both of their phones buzzed at the same time.
since reaching the top 10 ranks, both of them were never really called in for work during their break times, and so now that not just one but both of them were notified spelled capital EMERGENCY.
in an instant, they both left money on the counter and stepped out of the restaurant in the pouring rain to respond to the emergency call.
being a pro hero for nearly 10 years now, katsuki learned to be ready at all times, even during vacations. so, he had professional engineers craft him emergency retractable gauntlets. it would look like they were simple black bracelets on both wrists but in a single press, they burst into gauntlets ready for battle.
"your suit, nerd?" he asked as they both ran towards the area of emergency.
"on its way," replied izuku.
izuku's suit is packed in a suitcase, and since its too heavy and bulky to be carried around at all times, he had asked hatsume for an upgrade 3 months in since he'd received it.
with a single press of a button on his own wristlet, his suit will come flying towards his location anywhere, anytime. any minute now, the suit will come assembling around izuku's body.
"told you we shouldve brought my car. you cant rely on just calling your suit from your apartment, it'll arrive when the fights over!" yelled katsuki over the now heavier downpour of the rain.
"dont worry, kacchan, it'll always arrive on time!"
and it did. katsuki had always known the suit would arrive on time-- it had never been late even for a second since. but for some reason, a small itchy feeling of dread always let itself known at the pits of his stomach.
and as always, he'd just shrug it off. he trusted hastume and melissa, he trusted the suit, and of course, he trusted deku.
deku always found a way to get through anything.
katsuki had fired his quirk to propel himself to the air, and the suitcase flew past him towards deku who was still on the ground. there was a whirring sound before it engulfed izuku's body and in a second, the green hero was beside katsuki in the air.
the suit fit deku perfectly. it wasnt as bulky as all might's during the war, and it was also light enough for deku to wear it with ease. the green lights below its creases wasnt too distracting, and it also came with its own ai assistant.
"akame, 80% manual mode," deku commanded.
"80% manual mode activated," replied the ai assistant.
katsuki looked towards the green hero and couldnt contain a smile as he watched deku catch up to him with the biggest smile of his own. "kacchan, lets go!" called the nerd as he used the blackwhip replica to swing himself ahead of katsuki.
"its great explosion murder god dynamight, you asshole!" he called back.
For the last two years, Katsuki had actually tried convincing himself to confess his feelings to Izuku. He did, at some point, believe that Izuku might also have feelings for him, but the fear of rejection and breaking their friendship now scared him more.
The guilt, altho Izuku had long told him again and again that he was forgiven and not to dwell in the past too much was still pretty much consuming him.He did try not to get too carried away with it but at times it just came crawling back up to the surface and haunting him again.
As soon as they graduated, Katsuki had promised to himself that he would do anything to bring him and Izuku’s dreams to reality. It took so long– almost a decade– but it was worth it.
Izuku got to be a hero again, and Katsuki got to have his most important person fight alongside him as well.
Everything was in its rightful place, and everything was going so well. And yet.. That wasnt how their short break was supposed to happen.
Dynamight was surprised to see not one, not two, but almost every single pro hero on the top ranks. If he included the rookies and other lower ranks that seemed to be around 70 heroes total.
What the fuck was going on?
Turns out, a new villain organization decided to debut themselves that day. As far as Katsuki knew, they were not associated with the League of Villains or follow AFO’s ideals. They’re just new.
They just loathed heroes to the guts.
That it was their fault in the first place that villains like them existed.
Of course, hearing this riled up the summoned heroes– mostly the rookies, as the much older ones knew better than to let your emotions control you in this kind of situation.
With a cry from the villain leader, the battle started. Half of the summoned heroes decided to evacuate the civilians from the vicinity, trying to get them out of the perimeter of the battle.
Dynamight, along with other top heroes with offensive-type quirks, led the vanguard.
Deku chose to aid the evacuation, guarding them from incoming debris or villains that try to harm. However, while the battle was going on, a villain came across him forcing him out of evacuation duties.
Dynamight, as usual, came to Deku’s side and with practiced moves, the duo managed to subdue the villain.
They instantly clicked, they were in sync, they moved as one. Its not like they cant defeat enemies by themselves, its just that they feel and fight better when the other is there. Their compatibility during combat was astounding that they set the standards of being hero partners.
The public had dubbed them “The Wonder Duo” and they did live up to its definition.
That’s them, Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight and Deku.
Villain after villain, they managed to defeat quite a number, never forgetting to put quirk-nullifying cuffs on them and also making sure the police got them. They were on a streak, things were slowly starting to be under control.
That was until a particular villain came to them. The villain was floating from above, showering them with bullets. He had a manic grin as he aimed his gun at Deku.
Dynamight and Deku immediately were in pursuit.
They shot up to the sky to get to the villain. They still didn’t know what his quirk was as he had boosters on his boots for his flight and was using guns as weapons. The villain was very agile mid-air, managing to dodge both attacks from the hero duo.
It had become a tiring cat-and-mouse game. The villain kept dodging and running away from the duo that had annoyed Dynamight to the guts. The rain had come to a drizzle but it was still cold and his gauntlets can only do so to warm his arms.
After the chase, the villain decided to stop by the rooftop of one of the tallest buildings in the city. Dynamight and Deku also landed, stances ready.
“Ran out of fuel, ya extra?!” Dynamight tried to catch his breath. He could feel his hands and arms tingling, cursing the villain for forcing him to overuse his quirk.
Without removing his eyes from the villain, Deku whispered, “Kacchan, your arms.”
“I fucking know, Deku. Worry about yourself,” he spat back. The villain laughed at their exchange. “See, this is why it's fun to play with you, Hero Deku.” He moved around near the edges and this brought the duo to an alert. “You worry too much about others.”
“That’s kinda the meaning of being a hero,” Deku nonchalantly answered back.
The villain smirked. He unzipped his overly large coat and dropped it to the ground. The duo’s eyes widened in shock. They were hit with the realization that this villain was more dangerous than they expected.
Bombs were wrapped up all around his torso and the timers were almost up. “Chop, chop, heroes. Whatever shall you do?” The villain laughed maniacally, shaking the bombs strapped on his body.
“Fuck,” Dynamight cursed. "I tried to fucking hit him with my quirk while on the chase.” The realization that if the villain had not been agile enough and was unfortunately hit with Dynamight’s quirk, the bombs would’ve exploded, and it was enough to damage the city below them.
This little fucker was a disaster.
“Kacchan..”
Katsuki looked towards Izuku. He had a look in his eyes and Katsuki’s guts didn’t like it one bit.
“Don’t even fucking think about it, shitnerd,” Katsuki growled.
The villain slowly backed away from them to the edge of the building, “Tick, tock,” he teased with a grin on his face.
“Kacchan!”
“No, Izuku!”
No, please, was what he wanted to say. Whatever Izuku was planning, it had to be crazy and he cant risk that. These were bombs they’re dealing with– this wasn’t Katsuki’s quirk. This was something even Katsuki could not control.
“Trust me, Kacchan, we don’t have much time!”
The villain clicked his tongue and sighed, “And you call yourselves the wonder duo?” Without warning, the villain jumped off the edge.
Deku quickly ran after him and jumped. Dynamight quickly followed, cursing under his breath. “Fuck, Deku!”
Just as he was about to reach the edge, Deku flew upwards past him, Blackwhip replica activated with the villain wrapped around the end. Dynamight anxiously watched as Deku swung the villain upwards, but it was too late.
The bombs exploded in the air but since he was too close, Dynamight was blown backwards. He quickly tried to regain his balance.
“Izuku!” he screamed into the dark smoke cloud above him.
When he looked up, he spotted Deku falling from the smoke unconscious.
Dynamight never reacted so quickly in his life.
Despite the still tingly feeling in his hands, he blasted himself to the edge and jumped from the building to catch Deku but even then, the green hero still slipped from his hands.
“No..”
Deku was dropping fast.
Despite the pain in his arms increasing and rain picking up its pace again, Katsuki used his quirk to catch up to Izuku’s unconscious body. Izuku’s face was covered with soot yet also looked like he was asleep.
As if he didn’t just do the craziest shit ever to save the city.
“Fuck, Deku! Deku, wake up!” he screamed, the wind howling in his ears.
Deku still didn’t budge.
Please, he’s so close.
“Deku– Agh!!” His right arm pulsed in pain, deeming it unusable anymore. He could feel his left arm pulsing as well, but he still pushed it. He needed to catch up to Izuku. He needed to save Izuku.
Remembering his plans and designs of the suit, he screamed, “Override! Emergency access, Katsuki!”
He needed to override the 80% manual mode Izuku set up earlier. Once overridden, the suit will automatically do its thing and save the user. He just needed to override the command.
But the suit didn’t respond.
300 meters before hitting the ground.
“Override! Emergency access, Katsuki Bakugo!”
250 meters before hitting the ground.
“Override! Emergency access, Katsuku Bakugo, godfuckingdammit!” his voice broke, his throat burned, his heart ached. Please please please let me save him.
I haven't told him I love him yet.
180 meters before hitting the ground.
“Fucking override! Emergency access, Kacchan!”
A click and the suit whirred to life again.
The fucking idiot found out about the emergency access and changed it to fucking Kacchan.
Hope sparked in Katsuki’s chest.
But it was too late.
Deku was already so close to the ground.
At the moment, Katsuki felt like he was engulfed with a time quirk.
It felt like the wind stopped hitting his face as he watched the love of his life hit the ground.
Along with many others, Hero Deku died that day.
