Chapter Text
The fresh air of the summer night mixed with the dimly lit scenery of Magnolia’s park helped to forget a lot of things. Like the heatwaves of the day, the complaints of various guild members over the smallest things, even her long day of work.
But it could not appease Mirajane’s worries.
Maybe it could have, if the one thing worrying her the most wasn’t here. Her “boyfriend”.
Her idea seemed perfect, a late night date. Both of them were busy wizards, and the few times they saw each others during the day was in the guild hall. It hardly felt romantic with everyone surrounding the couple.
That’s why she prepared it all, it needed to be perfect. Down to the last details. Mirajane chose the place after asking couples at the guild where was their favorite date, made the food with the outmost care and dressed in one of her favorite dresses, not too casual yet not overdressed.
But that was without taking in account who her “boyfriend” was, Laxus Dreyar.
A hundred and ninety six centimeters of arrogance and pride mixed with an unhealthy obsession with power.
“Power” seemed like the only thing he talked about. How now the guild was “too weak” and that he would “never let the cowards or the drunkard infesting the guild stay once he’ll be master.” Over and over again the same topic.
It was truly better than when he was ranting about his view on women, Mirajane thought to herself. But still if for one he could just talked about whatever he had done on his last mission and she could pretend to care. It would be all way easier.
The woman ignored what she liked about that man. But she knew it all started when Erza made a comment about how Laxus was becoming more and more insufferable and that Mirajane should stop being nice to him.
Maybe it was the need to light up once again the flame of their old rivalry that pushed the she-devil to do the exact opposite of what titania told her. Or maybe it was a ridiculous attempt at making herself more seen by the woman that used to noticed every little things about her. In any case it hasn’t worked.
And there she was, listening to the stupidest things she ever heard with one of the worst man she ever met.
She didn’t get the appeal for Laxus. Many women claimed to love him, maybe it was his physic or his power. Yet when she saw the many jealous stares she got when getting closer to him, it was all an enigma to her.
Laxus wasn’t attractive in the way she liked, maybe she just liked more delicate traits, less imposing frame and beautiful brown eyes…
Mirajane needed to come back to reality and interrupt the idiot next to her before her mind wandered too far.
“What happened on your last job that made you and the thunder legion stays a week there?”The white haired woman wanted to add how she thought that such strong mages as them should have finish it earlier. But it would only make the electric mage shout at her.
“Not much, it was about a curse placed on a small village." Laxus answered. "It was summoning some monsters. Even if the monsters were pretty weak it took us four days to locate the origin then a day for Freed to figure out how to safely remove the spell then finally the whole town threw a party and it would have been rude to refuse you know."
"It’s a lovely gesture coming from the villagers…" Mirajane answered as an attempt to fuel the conversation. It did not work.
The next seconds truly felt like hours of nothing but the quiet noise of the park. This couldn’t go on. She turned her head to gaze into the vividly orange eyes of the man next to her.
She knew what she was supposed to do as a girl. So she closed the distance separating them, softly put her hand on his chest and delicately pressed her lips on Laxus’.
It felt wrong.
Terribly wrong. The barmaid felt sick to her stomach. But it only just started.
The dragon slayer, at first surprised, had not react, letting her do this. He nearly seemed as uncomfortable as her.
But suddenly Laxus seemed to regain consciousness. And what should have been nothing more than an innocent kiss turned into a battle for dominance.
Taking the white haired girl waist into his hands and flipping her into the grass. He wasn’t careful or about it and as her back hit the ground Mirajane felt a slight pain, for anyone else it would probably had felt worse. But even if parts of her magic was gone, years of fighting didn’t evaporate like that.
Maybe that’s why she didn’t stop it. Maybe that’s why, as Laxus who had stopped the kiss to look at her with that stupid grin, she barged her own head against the blond man.
It looked more like a headbutt than an attempt at deepening their kiss. She didn’t care, as she felt like her old self for a second. Her longing for fights, the violence accompanying her attack, the need not to feeling like a damsel in distress ever again.
During the short amount of time it took the electric mage for getting over the shock at the revelation of this new found strength, she pushed him with all her strength and managed to come on top. Breaking the kiss it was the demoness turn to look down on her poor boyfriend.
But the satisfaction was short, Laxus wouldn’t and couldn’t stand to be looked down on. And as a full time working mage he had much more strength than her. It took him less than a second to violently pin her arms against the cold dirt. If there was a time she might have been able to retort easily, she wasn’t that person anymore.
Forced to hit the revelation that she truly wasn’t who she used to be once again. She didn’t even tried to fight back as any attempt would have been useless, especially against one of the strongest mage she knew.
They both just stared at each other like this for a while. There was no point of continuing or going further as they both knew who had won. It was weird, even though the barmaid had never really dated anyone before. She could tell that the weird ache she felt in her stomach had nothing to do with the butterfly people felt when they were in love.
Some second’s later, Laxus let go of her and got up in a second. As Mirajane was slowly rising to sit down and try to understand what had just happened, the blond man barely muttered a “goodbye”before walking away. Leaving her with nothing but her thoughts. As the stomps of Laxus foot steps faded away she felt like she just had been struck by lighting and the only remains of it was the smell of ozone in the air.
