The clock softly ticks as seconds go by. The rain patters lightly making uneven but pretty rhythms outside of the window. Shu, who has already gotten his work done, gazes out the window with his left cheek resting on his left hand. The class is unusually more quiet today. The calming shower outside seemed to help everyone settle down and stay focused.
As Shu daydreams about, he always has someone in his mind drifting about. Someone who always completed him well. Someone who gave the energy of like a dog.
Someone who he would get special feels for.
Feelings that didn’t feel so right for who he called his best friend.
Luca Kaneshiro.
Shu stares down at his notebook with notes of what he needed but also some less important things like doodles and a certain drawn to the sides and free spaces of his paper. His indifferent face starts to get a slight tint of pink when he realizes what he had done.
“What the frick am I doing!?…” Shu mumbles under his breath a little agitated but he still doesn’t bother to erase them…like with all the pages before that one.
He heaves a heavy sigh. For the past several years, ever since 7th grade, Shu has been dealing with the realization of these unnatural feelings for his best friend. They are now seniors and he hasn’t been able to utter a single word. He and Luca actually met on a play ground near their apartment complex. They were both 6 years old and their mothers decided it was a lovely to day to out and play.
Although they were so young, it is still such a clear memory. Luca was crying his eyes out while lying in the sandbox with a destroyed castle. His older brother had kicked it down and pushed him. When Shu landed at the bottom of the slide, he saw and he was curious but also worried about the blonde boy who looked his age crying in the sandbox. He walked over and squatted down outside of the sandbox but close enough to began and pat the crying boys forehead.
The boy froze for a bit a little confused but then continued to bawl.
The young boy who had hair of like a raven with a unique golden highlight then said something after 15 seconds of patting. “My mommy always does this when I cry.” He spoke in a sweet voice.
The blond’s cries began to fade into sniffles. He stared up at the strange but weirdly comforting boy with snot and tears all over his face. His vision still a little blurry.
When Shu notices that the other boy had calmed down he then helped him sit up. The two stare at the fallen down sand castle and as Luca is about to start walking again, Shu cuts in and covers the boys eyes and grabs his hand to lead him outside of the sand box. The sad boy follows surprisingly very well.
While the walked around for a bit the blond boy had officially stopped sniffling and could look up with clear eyes. Shu smiled and introduced himself. “My name is Shu what’s yours?”
In a little timid voice the boy spoke, “M-my name is Wuca…”
“Hi Wuca!” Little Shu said in a cheerful manner.
“Hi S-Shu..! Uhm…my famiwy just moved in..” Little Luca shyly replied.
“WOAHH! I should be your first ever friend!” Shu excitedly exclaimed
“O-oh okay..”
‘Shu is so grown up’ Luca thought.
Ever since that day, the two became inseparable. They lived in the same apartment complex only a door away from each other and began going to the same school. Luca was very very different from when they first met. Who knew that shy boy would end up being this hyper ball of energy!? The boys were stuck together like glue. If you saw one the other would be no more than a foot away.
At school, if Luca began to act up, everyone knew to call up Shu. It was like a dog being scolded by his owner. Although…that owner would always give in and spoil his dog. Shu wasn’t all that serious as everyone thought. Sure he is very smart and more behaved than others, but if you’re close to him (Like Luca) his more immature side comes out like poopy and deez nut jokes.
After school, Shu and Luca would head home together and walk the same lengthy route back to their apartment everyday. When it rained, they would share Shu’s handy umbrella and be squeezed under the dome with their hands nearly touching while holding the umbrella together. Either refused to have the other just hold the umbrella on their own so they came to a compromise to hold it together which made the space really tight..but does it matter when they are practically glued to the hip already?
Shu’s young heart skipped a beat.
Once they made it home, instead of saying their goodbyes right there, they would hang out for at least 3 hours or more. Doing homework together, playing games, talking, random things, and just enjoy being in each other’s presence. They swap between whose home they would hangout in. Both of their families were also close. Shu would always try to protect Luca from his brother’s little antics but as they got older it seemed that Luca was the more bothersome one than his older brother Sonny. Luca’s parents were like his second parents and his parents like Luca’s. They didn’t live far from each other just a door away.
On days where they needed to study, their mothers would forbid them from studying together. They knew that if they were next to each other for hours in silence, they would definitely get off track and forget the study. Homework was fine because at least they got to talk to each other about the answers and get it done.
I miss him.
Shu never had a girlfriend or a crush. While he watched Luca get a few casual girlfriends in middle school. He wasn’t sure as to why it would make him feel strange. Was he jealous of his best friend or was he jealous of the girlfriend…? Shu would always tell Luca that dating in middle school wasn’t the brightest idea which made Luca confused because usually Shu supports him with almost everything. Why did he seem more distant and upset now? Luca’s relationships lasted no more than a month. The girls would realize he was too attached to Shu and there was no point in dating a handsome face attached to his best friend.
Jealousy.
When 7th grade came, Shu began to realize why he felt this way. That young but more aware boy began to get shy and awkward around Luca after the realization. He hoped that Luca wouldn’t notice and that he could get over it and Shu did get over his time of being awkward around Luca but never his feelings. Luca was just so kind and caring to him while also being fun and a safe space to be around. How could Shu not develop a crush? He never tried to drive them away though he just let them be.
Oh crap.
Now they were high school and were seniors about to graduate. They ended up in different high schools which was devastating but they needed the education that fitted best for them. Even so, they still managed to go home together. They would meet up at a park nearby and then make their way home. Both of their faces would lit up whenever they saw each other. While they did have friends at their own schools, they didn’t have their best friend, they didn’t have each other. The walk home was like the usual but they always had fun and exciting things to do when they were around each other not a dull day went by when they were together.

Despite Luca being such a big healthy and active guy, he would fall sick more than Shu. Shu never got sick on a school day surprisingly. But the days when Luca was sick, after school Shu would always rush down the shorter path way home and go to see Luca and help him catch up on work and feel better.
Sick days.
The last bell rang and Shu rushed out as fast as he could. He said bye to his friends and rushed to the usual spot. And there he saw him. The golden haired boy that can’t escape his headspace. Sitting under a cover in the now lifted sprinkle of rain
“Luca!” Shu rushed over while waving his hand to greet the guy.
“Shubert!!!” Before Shu could even reach another foot to Luca, Luca jumped up and lunged at the ravenette putting him in a tight hug.
“Ah! Wait let me get my umbrella.” Shu nudged Luca off a little to get the umbrella out from his bag. He saw a little sad expression on Luca’s face as if you stopped giving a dig head pats. Shu giggled slightly at the sight.
“What’s so funny Mr. Yamino!” Luca pouted with his arms crossed I a sassy demeanor glaring at the shorter one.
“Oh, nothingggg~!” Shu smirked with his eyes suspiciously looking away.
“Oh, reallyyyy~?” Luca scoffed leaning closer with his eyes squinted with suspicion.
“Mr. Yamino, you are really sus!” Luca tapped his index finger onto Shu’s forehead before he grabbed the umbrella to hold with Shu.
Man, I love that expression. Shu thought to himself while he covered his slightly reddened face giggling to himself a little.
Luca side eyed him then he noticed Shu was getting into the rain a little.
“Ah! Shu, c’mere!” Luca wrapped his arms around Shu’s shoulders and brought him closer to him under the umbrella.
“We can’t let the Mr. Yamino getting sick now. I would be sadgeee!!” Luca whined while still holding Shu as they walked.
Shu didn’t look up…his face was hot and he could tell it was red. He couldn’t respond to him as if the world stopped.
“S-Shu…?” Luca said in a worried tone while looking down to try to face the ravenette.
“Ah- Thank you, Luca.” He was flustered but managed to sound as nonchalant as possible.
“Shu, are you okay you seem red…” Luca carefully took Shu’s face to face his and compared their temperatures.
“Hmmm, you seem warmer than usual…do you feel any symptoms?” The blonde with a worried and serious expression questioned.
“Uhm- I’m fine Luca don’t worry about me!” Shu’s stammered a little making Luca lean closer into his face.
“Okay~ whatever you say banana man. But if anything starts to come up you know your man.” Luca smugly pointed at himself very proudly.
“Alright, Doc Kaneshiro.” Shu calmed down and looked Luca in the eyes with a smug smirk as well.
“We’ve gotten to big! Look at how soaked my shoulder is just from the sprinkle.” Luca pointed at his shoulder that was exposed to the rain.
“Well, you did get pretty big with all your muscles you used to be smaller than me!” Shu said as he took out some tissues from
His bag to try and cover Luca’s shoulder.
“Yeah…I’m glad I’ve gotten bigger, remember when you said you would only marry me if I got bigger than you.” Luca said softly not meaning to tease but it sounded like it.
“Well, big guy do you still wanna carry out that plan?” He raised an eyebrow and looked up to Luca to see a shy looking man with his face slightly red.
“Ah-“ Shu made a little sound as his face started to turn a red as well.
what the heckk…the ravenette thought a little confused but enjoying the expression on Luca’s face.
Suddenly Luca stopped making Shu stop.
“Luca?” Shu questioned looking at the taller boy.
“Yes.”
“??”
Y-yes, I still plan to carry that out.”
Everything was frozen. The silence was filled with the sound of the rain and occasional call of birds.
“Oh my gosh.” Shu spoke.
“And I am being very serious Shu.” Luca looked nervous and looked to be prepared for the worst.
“I…like you Shu more than a best friend.” Finally looking up to face Shu his eyebrows furrowed as he nibbled at his bottom lip.
Shu snapped out of his shock and got closer to the blonde and patted his forehead while giving a relieved and gentle smile.
“Shu…?” Luca whispered a little scared thinking Shu is preparing to reject him.
Shu covered Luca’s eyes very gently and it felt comforting to Luca. Shu could feel Luca shaking a little bit and he smiled and giggled a little bit before laying his lips onto Luca’s very very very rosy cheeks making them even more rosier.
“SHU…!?” Luca shouted in shock and excitement mouth opened in place face DEFINITELY red.
Shu covered his face that was also very red with both of his hands letting go of the umbrella.
Luca then dropped the umbrella and pulled Shu into a tight hug squealing.
“POGGGG I POG YOU SHU!” He shouted loud as ever.
“Pog, really?” Shu let out his high laugh at how silly the boys words were.
“I pog you too, Luca!” Squeezing Luca harder than before.
“Does this mean we are boyfriends now?” Luca question trying to make sure he wasn’t misunderstanding the situation.
“What do you think dummy.” Giving Luca another peck on the cheek.
“AHHHH….Shu not public…at least not yet! Let’s head home quick!!” Luca grabbed Shu’s wrist with such tenderness its like Shu was just being dragged by the wind.
As they ran through the rain it felt like all there was nothing in the world and it was just them. Nothing else mattered even if they got soaked from the rain.
The two were as happy as ever and on that day they announce that they were in a relationship to their family. The family’s were honestly unsurprised and actually were waiting for it to finally happen. They definitely got a lot of annoying teasing from their families but they supported their love. (they’ve always been rooting)
