Work Text:
Rafael knocks once before pushing her door open, assertive and efficient as always.
“Let’s discuss the case, Captain Benson,” he says, a little too brightly as he shuts the door behind him.
Olivia doesn’t even glance at the files in his hand. “You’re not winning any Tonys for that delivery.”
He rolls her eyes, stepping further into the room. “Rude.”
She waits until the latch clicks shut before raising an eyebrow, a smile emerging on his face - the one reserved entirely for him and Noah. “People are going to wonder why you keep showing up here for things that we could discuss on the phone”
“No one’s caught on,” he says smugly. “Give me some credit.”
She doesn’t reach for his hand; they don’t do that in the precinct. They’ve kept the lines clean so far: no touches while they’re working, no looks that linger too long. Still, the distance between them hums with the ease of a secret well-kept.
Then, she opens the file. Two foil-pressed tickets slide out, catching the light.
Coldplay: Music of the Spheres World Tour 2025.
She blinks. “Are you serious?”
“They’re legit.”
“How the hell did you get these? Weren’t they gone in, like, three seconds?”
“A gift from Rita Calhoun,” he says, half-smirking - Rita was one of the only people they worked with who knew about their relationship. “Do you think she wants to head-bop her way through A Sky Full of Stars in a stadium full of drunk millennials? She’d much rather spend her evening at the Met Opera.”
She holds up the tickets as if they were rare artifacts. “Not even in the VIP section?”
“Please. The only thing Rita’s ever waited in line for was a ticket to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s last Hamilton show.”
She lets out a quiet laugh, still stunned. He can see it in the way he’s holding them, like they’re too good to be real. Only Rafael knows Coldplay is her weakness, second only to the Beatles. Only Rafael would know how much this would mean to her.
“You don’t have to say yes,” he adds, almost as an afterthought. “But I thought… we could use a night off.”
She looks up then, the corners of his mouth tugging like he can’t quite believe he’s real, even after six months of knowing better.
“You had me at Coldplay, sweetheart.”
He slips out of his office with a triumphant grin, which he smooths away just in time, before stepping back into the bullpen.
Amanda Rollins is vibrating in her chair - almost literally. Her fingers fly across her keyboard, but she’s not even pretending to be working. “They’re real,” she practically shrieks. “They’re real, and we’re going to see Coldplay.”
Carisi, perched on the edge of his desk, grins wide enough to hurt. “I haven’t seen them live since college, when they played Madison Square Garden.”
“I’ve never seen them live!” Amanda clutches her chest. “I’ve only sobbed to Fix You in the bath, like a normal person.”
Fin holds up the glossy tickets like they’re sacred scrolls. “We’re locked in now. I only know two Coldplay songs, though.”
“You’re going to love them by the end of the night,” Amanda chirps. “We have floor seats, courtesy of a friend who couldn’t make it. Don’t say I don’t spoil you.”
Fin deadpans, “If we end up on the Jumbotron with you, Rollins, I’m walking into traffic.”
“So, should we leave directly from here?” Amanda asks.
Carisi glances at his phone. “The concert starts at eight. We can head there a little earlier and grab some food beforehand.”
They all nod; the excitement in the air is palpable - even from Fin, who’s pretending to play it cool.
None of them - none - realise that behind the closed door of her office, Olivia is high-fiving herself for pulling off the perfect secret date night.
The stadium hums with anticipation, but in their VIP box, time feels slower and softer. Soft lighting glows from discreet fixtures and trays of hors d’oeuvres and drinks are waiting, untouched and abundant. Olivia leans back with her glass of champagne in hand, eyes tracing the dim glow of the stage lights. “You know,” she says in awe, “I never thought I’d get to see Coldplay like this.”
Rafael smiles, the bubbles in his flute catching the light. “It’s perfect. I mean, I’ve caught you singing Yellow under your breath more times than I can count.”
“Don’t pretend you don’t sing along,” she smirks. “You’re a much better singer than me, anyway.”
He shrugs playfully. “Only when no one’s listening.”
Their hands find each other across the armrest, fingers intertwining naturally. Olivia leans against him, relaxed for the first time in what feels like forever. “I think Amanda and the gang have tickets too,” she says with a mischievous glint in her eye. “But we’re safe - no one can see us up here.”
The crowd buzzes around them, but for now, they have this moment.
Amanda plops down into her seat, beer in one hand, and a giant bag of merchandise and her camera in the other. She doesn’t even wait for the show to start to pull on the souvenir T-shirt she waited an hour in line for.
Carisi stretches beside her with an excited grin. “I still can’t believe we got these floor seats. Best night ever.”
“You two definitely will have sore throats tomorrow.” Fin raises his beer and takes a hearty swig.
They all laugh, clinking drinks as the stage lights start to pulse, none the wiser that Olivia and Rafael are in the VIP box on the other side of the stadium.
The opening chords of Viva La Vida thunder through the air like a signal flare, and the crowd answers with a roar.
Olivia startles him. She screams - actually screams - and throws both fists in the air, her eyes bright with disbelief and wonder. She’s grinning so widely it makes him laugh, and when she turns to him, flushed and exhilarated, he catches her hand without hesitation, threading their fingers together like it’s the most natural thing in the world. He doesn’t let go, and neither does she.
By the time The Scientist rolls in, slow and aching, the crowd has settled into a collective hush. Rafael’s thumb is tracing slow circles over her knuckles, and Olivia feels like her heart is going to spill out of her chest.
Then Yellow. He looks at her when it plays. The lights from the stage wash over them in waves - gold, then white, then gold again - and for a second, it feels like they’re the only two people in the world. His fingers tighten around hers, and it’s overwhelming, the love she feels; fierce and certain and now. And when he lifts her hand to his lips, brushing a kiss against her knuckles without taking his eyes off her, she knows.
Later, during A Sky Full of Stars, she waves her arms in the air with zero shame, LED wristband flashing wildly in sync with the music. She even elbows the guy - some senator’s son - beside him, who looks mildly affronted and takes a cautious step back. Rafael can’t stop laughing.
And then he turns to her with a smile so wide it scrunches his eyes, and she just shakes her head, helpless with affection.
This man. This life. This ridiculous, wonderful moment.
Honestly? She wouldn’t trade it for anything.
By the time Fix You begins, Olivia is practically glowing. Rafael stands behind her with his arms wrapped comfortably around her waist and his chin resting lightly on her shoulder. She leans back into him without thinking, the way she always does now, trusting the steadiness of his hold and relishing the warmth of his breath against her skin.
He sways with her gently, chest pressed to her back, mouthing along to the lyrics he knows by heart. Meanwhile, she sings off-key and loudly enough that the senator’s son in the next seat shoots them a bemused look. Olivia doesn’t care, though. She laughs and grins so widely that she clutches his hands just to stay upright.
Between lines, he ducks his head to her ear. “I love you so much,” he declares, just like that, breathless and earnest, then picks up the chorus again, still clutching her close.
They don’t notice the kiss cam at first. They’re not looking at the Jumbotron, or the crowd, or the crew darting around with cameras. Instead, they’re just watching the stage, his arms around her waist, holding on to each other, absolutely at peace. Olivia’s eyes are shining; her face aches from how much she’s smiled. She’s still singing with all the emotional commitment of a teenage girl at her first concert.
Rafael only realises something’s happening when the applause starts, warm but expectant, and then spreads through the stadium like wildfire. He squints upward as confusion flickers across his face, then freezes as the massive screen comes into focus.
There they are, front and center, caught mid-embrace.
From the stage, Chris Martin’s voice carries clearly and unfiltered over the speakers. “Look at these two,” he says tenderly, nodding toward the screen. The stadium responds with a collective “awww.”
Olivia’s eyes widen in horror, and her cheeks flame with a deep, unmistakable red. “Oh my God,” she exclaims, voice barely above a whisper.
Rafael’s grin falters; he runs a hand through his hair, his usual composure unravelling. His eyes dart nervously between the screen and the crowd, his shoulders tensing like a cornered animal. The smile that breaks through is sheepish and embarrassed, like a boy caught doing something he knows he shouldn’t, but can’t quite help. Then, in a move that’s so un-Rafael it’s almost cinematic, he physically drops out of frame, squatting down in a futile attempt to escape the camera’s spotlight.
The flush on Olivia’s cheeks deepens, and she feels heat radiate through her entire body. She quickly moves away from Rafael, turning her back to the camera as she tries unsuccessfully to make herself small and invisible. Her hands fly to her face in horror, fingers splayed across her cheeks as if she can press the moment out of existence. She curls in on herself, trying, hopelessly, to make herself invisible.
Chris Martin’s tone drips with playful bemusement. “Oh, what?” he chuckles. “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”
The crowd roars. A mix of delighted whoops, awkward laughter, and amused chuckles ripples through the stadium. Somewhere, someone wolf-whistles.
Olivia wants the floor to open up and swallow her whole.
Rafael shrugs awkwardly, barely able to meet Olivia’s eyes. She’s biting her lip to keep from giggling, or maybe crying, and they both glance toward the floor seats, knowing full well that the stadium has caught every second.
And their friends, somewhere in the floor seats.
This was not what they expected of the night.
Amanda’s phone has been glued to her hand the entire concert, filming like she’s making a documentary. Her fingers swipe and tap as she captures everything: the crowd, the band, the flashing lights.
Fin leans over. “Rollins, why are you filming the kiss cam? Are you actually going to watch this later?”
Amanda waves a hand dismissively. “Are you kidding? It’s so sweet. Moments like this are everything.”
Carisi chuckles as he sips what’s left of his drink. “You’re a hopeless romantic, Manda.”
“Guilty as charged.”
Suddenly, Amanda freezes, phone still pointed toward the Jumbotron. “Wait. Wait, wait, wait - hold on.”
Carisi follows her gaze, eyebrows shooting up. The screen zooms in on the VIP box… and there they are.
Rafael Barba and Olivia Benson, clear as day, caught mid-embrace, and suddenly the stars of an entirely different kind of show.
“OH MY GOD!” Amanda practically screams, nearly dropping her phone. “Barba and Liv?!”
Carisi’s mouth falls open. “No way. Since when?”
Fin is laughing hard from sheer disbelief. “They’ve been hiding it from us this whole time?”
Amanda’s fingers fly over her phone again. “Texting right now. I’m going to blow up their phones.”
Carisi nudges her with a grin. “Think they’ll live this down?”
Fin deadpans, “Not a chance. Not ever.”
Amanda’s grin stretches ear to ear. “The concert just got so much better.”
Amanda Rollins:
WHAT IS GOING ON??
YOU WERE ALL OVER THE JUMBOTRON!
You owe us an explanation!
Olivia stares at her phone screen, cheeks still burning, but doesn’t type a single reply - she’s too embarrassed to even begin. Rafael glances over, a small, amused smile tugging at his lips. They sit close but a little awkwardly now, as the glow from their Jumbotron moment still lingers in the air.
Around them, the other VIP guests steal curious glances and their whispers ripple through the room. Olivia spots a few raised eyebrows and subtle side-eyes. It’s obvious: everyone’s wondering if there’s something more going on. Rafael notices, shrugs, and leans in with mock earnestness. “We’re not having an affair,” he says, voice low but with a grin. “Just… caught by surprise.”
Olivia laughs quietly, shaking her head. “Mission definitely failed.”
Rafael reaches for her hand again, fingers warm and steady despite their moment of humiliation. “Let’s just survive the rest of the concert without becoming the main event.”
They share a look that’s equal parts sheepish and fond and settle back to watch the show, secretly glad they got caught, if only for a moment.
Sonny Carisi:
You two are absolutely adorable.
Fin Tutuola:
Nice moves, Liv. Kiss cam debut? Bold.
Olivia groans. “I hate everyone.”
Rafael hides a smirk and looks around the booth again at the guests still eyeing them with mild disbelief. He sighs and says dryly to no one in particular, “Again, we’re NOT having an affair.”
Someone coughs pointedly in the corner. Rafael gestures between him and Olivia. “We just… love each other.”
Olivia buries her face in her hands.
Rafael leans in, his voice warm. “It’s not that bad, Liv.”
She peeks out from between her fingers. “We’re never going to hear the end of this.”
He grins. “Nope.”
In the floor seats below, Amanda, Carisi and Fin clink their glasses.
“Can’t wait to see them at work tomorrow,” Fin smirks.
The next morning, Olivia wakes up to seventy-six unread messages and an endless stream of push notifications.
Mystery Couple’s Awkward Kiss Cam Moment Steals the Show at Coldplay Concert
Married, Just Shy, or Having an Affair? Mystery Couple’s Blush-Worthy Kiss Cam Moment Sparks Internet Frenzy
Internet Obsessed with ‘VIP Couple’ from Coldplay Concert Kiss Cam - Who Are They?
She groans, burying her face in her pillow. “No. No, no, no.”
Body language experts weigh in: ‘There’s history there.’
Across the bed, Rafael is already up, sipping his coffee and scrolling through his phone. “Oh God, we’re all over TikTok,” he says flatly. “And there’s a montage of us set to Taylor Swift.”
Olivia pulls the blanket over her head.
He keeps scrolling. “This is crazy. Someone edited a slow zoom of us holding hands with the caption ‘He fell first, but she fell harder.’”
She mutters into the pillow, “I hate this timeline.”
“Apparently, we’re cheating on our respective imaginary spouses. There’s a video with a million views calling it ‘the affair reveal of the decade.’”
“We’re not! I’m not even-!” She makes a strangled sound.
“I know,” Rafael remarks amusedly, not looking up from his screen. “But congratulations, you’re the ‘other woman’ and I’m the ‘other man’ in at least seventeen comment threads.”
“God, how do people even write this fast?” Olivia presses the heels of her hands to her eyes. The sheer embarrassment continues to make her skin burn. “We were at the show less than twelve hours ago!”
Rafael’s phone buzzes again. His eyebrows shoot up.
Rita Calhoun:
Rafael! What happened?!
You used MY tickets to launch your relationship for the whole world to see?!
He lets out a dry laugh. “Guess the news travels fast.”
Olivia groans. “Oh, this is going to be fun.”
Rafael scrolls a bit more, then deadpans, “Oh great, here’s another gem: When the secret office romance finally soft-launches at a Coldplay concert.”
“Oh my God.” Olivia grabs the nearest throw pillow and smacks him in the shoulder. “I know that’s technically true… but stop reading those!”
He expertly dodges a second blow and grins at her. “Looks like it’s too late. We’re officially trending.”
There’s a ping, this time from the SVU group chat.
Amanda Rollins:
You’re VIRAL.
I repeat: VIRAL.
Fin Tutuola:
When Dodds and Jack McCoy find this…
Rafael raises an eyebrow. “That’s bad, right?”
Olivia sighs. “We’re never going to live this down.”
“I’m sure the entire NYPD and DA’s office knows by now.”
She peers out from under the blanket. “Shit.”
William Dodds:
Benson, my office, 10am.
And right on cue:
Jack McCoy:
Barba, I was made known of a video of you and Olivia Benson that’s making the rounds. See me today.
Rafael’s face darkens a little. “Now that’s bad.”
Olivia moves to turn her phone off. “We should’ve just stayed home.”
“Maybe.” A slow smile tugs at his lips. “But on the bright side… we don’t have to keep this under wraps now.”
She snorts, a reluctant grin breaking through. “True. Our friends know… and so does the rest of the world.”
He shrugs. “Could be worse. At least we’re not hiding anymore.”
Olivia shakes her head fondly. “Okay, fine. It was worth it. Just… next time, no Jumbotrons.”
Rafael raises his coffee in agreement. “No Jumbotrons.”
