Chapter Text
Dave POV
I was walking down the street with the love of my life, my wonderful Sportsy, the beautiful red sunset off in the distance, fading into pink right at the edges.
It would be perfect if we were right at the top of that hill there, it had never been in Jack’s neighborhood that I could remember but somehow I was sure there was a perfect cliff on the other side.
The night would be perfect, perfect sunset, perfect temperature, and most importantly, perfect Old Sport.
I picked him up and started running up the hill.
I swore he used to be heavier than this but I wasn’t complaining that I could so easily lift him.
He smiled up at me, everything that mattered in this world was in his eyes and that adorable smile.
I set him down at the top of the hill and sat down, my legs off the cliff, Old Sport and I watching the sunset.
As it got darker I tried to lean on his shoulder, but I fell right through.
Sportsy wasn’t there.
I got up quickly to see if he had just gotten up but he wasn’t behind me either.
I ran down the hill, hearing a struggle in the alley and running towards the sound.
I found my precious Old Sport bleeding from his arm, trying to fight off a guy with a knife, his wallet on the ground a few feet away.
He was fighting hard and would have been winning in a fair fight, but bleeding so much from his arm there was no way he’d win.
I called 911 and shouted into the phone “Sportsy’s hurt! Ambulance!” Before rushing over to wrestle the knife away from him. Sportsy was getting weaker but I could see blood coming from where he bit the guy.
I eventually got the knife from him and in my anger at him I stabbed it into his arm next to where Sportsy had bitten him.
He screamed and I woke up panting, the familiar dark of the alley I slept in closing in around me.
I was glad it was just a nightmare but I couldn’t let it happen for real.
I got up, grabbing the old dog bed I usually sleep on and dragging it to his house.
I checked under the mat for the key and opened the door.
I opened the door to his bedroom and sighed in relief when I found him peacefully sleeping in his bed, clutching that plushie of me I had made with stolen fabric and love.
I gave him a kiss on the cheek, ran my fingers through my hair, and got into bed next to him, leaving the dog bed on the floor in case he kicked me out of the bed.
His bed was warm and soft, much better than the alley I was used to.
I slipped under the covers, laying my legs over his for comfort, and drifting off almost immediately, not dreaming at all this time.
