Chapter Text
On April the 15th 2003 at exactly 7:13 A.M in a hospital in Pennsylvania a little girl was born. The delivery didn't last long, which usually meant the parents were able to meet their bundle of joy sooner, but not this time. As soon as she came out of the womb, the doctor let out a scream that was quickly followed by a gasp of the father and another yell, this time from the mother. The baby girl wasn't dead or anything: she was breathing just fine and her throat did let out its first cry. The problem was with her head or her lack of it. Her eyes, lips, nose and ears were all placed on what seemed to be a... piece of ham? The doctor was absolutely shocked, how could this be? This was against every law of human anatomy. A person cannot have a piece of meat for a head.
The newborn wasn't even given the chance to have some skin to skin contact with her mom, instead she was taken away for examinations. The medics had to find an answer to this illogical situation. Unfortunately, their questions would have to stay answered for a very long time since the baby's results were perfectly fine. Nothing could be done.
After what felt like forever, the little girl finally returned to her parents who were very on edge for obvious reasons. The nurse who brought her to them had her eyes wide open in shock. She quickly gave her to her mother as if she was some monster and left the room without a word. The woman who recently gave birth held her daughter for the first time and didn't know if she should cry or laugh. The position she found herself in was totally absurd. Her child grew a ham where her head should be.
The woman looked down at her, she wasn't hideous as you would expect. She had mommy's dark eyes, plus her smile was adorable. Everything would be perfect if not for the fact that the world decided to be cruel.
"Oh Arthur," The woman cried. "What are we going to do now?"
The father who was sitting right next to his wife's bed sighed. He honestly had no clue on what was happening. The doctors told him earlier that it was some unknown disease and that they currently could do nothing. It's not like the little girl's life was in danger, it was just a problem regarding her looks - that's at least what the doctors thought for now. With such unusual cases you can never know for sure.
The man wrapped his arm around her. "I don't know, Martha. All we can do now is pray to God that our little girl will be alright and love her with all our heart." He said quietly.
The mother nodded, agreeing silently. It was the truth, there was no point in trying to find an answer to the unanswerable. The only being who had the answer was the Lord above who worked in mysterious ways. Maybe things would get better if they just waited.
The parents didn't say anything for a long while as they prayed to God for some sort of solution. The first person who broke the stillness was Martha. "What will we name her?" She asked.
The dad thought about it for a moment. They both couldn't agree on the name while they were expecting so they came to a conclusion that they would know when they laid their eyes on her. However due to the craziness, matters such as what their kid would be called became meaningless. Suddenly an idea showed up in Arthur's mind.
"How about we call her Samantha?" He suggested, "You know, because I think if we listen to God, we will get our answers and a miracle..."
"I like that, I guess we can go with it" The woman answered.
The man smiled brightly. "Well then, welcome to the world, little Samantha." He basically chirped at his daughter, who let out a giggle. She clearly liked the name.
Samantha, that was the girls name from then on. She was completely unaware of the reality of her situation then on. She didn't know that she was sick and that that illness would make her days of youth very painful. She was in a state of oblivious bliss. If only she could have stayed so naive forever...
