Work Text:

Sunlight streamed through the tall windows of the Reyes-Strand household, casting gentle warmth over the cozy loft. It was a rare lazy Saturday, the kind of day Carlos Reyes longed for after a week of chasing criminals as a Texas Ranger. He stretched his arms over his head with a deep sigh, his gaze falling affectionately to where TK was sprawled across the couch, staring intently at the terrarium sitting proudly on the coffee table.

The glass enclosure housed the object of Carlos’s mild disdain—Lou II, their adopted son of the reptilian variety. Carlos shuddered slightly. He’d never been a fan of scaly creatures, no matter how much TK adored them. But the fond look on TK’s face whenever he watched the tiny creature was enough to make him tolerate the reptile's presence…barely.

Carlos smiled softly, warmth filling his chest as he watched TK. It still felt surreal sometimes—the pure luck of having TK in his life. He remembered clearly how he'd felt the day after coming out to his parents; the silence had been deafening. It was never discussed again, as if it were something shameful to be hidden away. Carlos had felt himself shrink, eventually even marrying Iris in an attempt to please his parents, giving up the dream of ever truly settling down with a man he genuinely loved.

But meeting TK had changed everything. Carlos still remembered the fluttering in his chest when he'd gathered the courage to ask TK to dance for the first time at the honky-tonk. It had felt like stepping into a new life—a life where he didn't have to hide anymore, where every day was filled with genuine affection and quiet, steady support. He couldn't believe how lucky he was to wake up each morning beside TK, the man who had given him the gift of fatherhood, and who made every challenge easier simply by existing.

He walked over, gently rubbing TK’s shoulders.

"Babe, you do realize you spend more time staring at Lou II than at me these days," Carlos teased lightly, leaning down to place a gentle kiss on TK's temple. He chuckled softly when TK glanced up, pretending to look offended.

"Well, Lou II doesn't complain when I shower him with affection," TK shot back, a playful smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. Carlos couldn't help but roll his eyes, pretending to clutch at his chest dramatically.

"Wow, so that's how it is? I see how easily replaceable I am," Carlos teased, shaking his head in mock disbelief. "Maybe I should just go cuddle Bunny next door. At least she appreciates me." Referring to their neighbor's golden retriever.

TK laughed out loud, reaching out to gently pinch Carlos’s side, making him squirm.

"You're jealous of our child, Carlos. That's just sad."

"That 'child' of ours is a tiny dinosaur, and I think he's plotting my demise," Carlos whispered conspiratorially, glancing suspiciously toward Lou II's cage. "He gives me that look."

TK shook his head with an affectionate smile, nudging Carlos lightly with his shoulder. "You're ridiculous, babe."

Carlos grinned softly, warmth blossoming in his chest as he watched TK laugh. It was moments like these that reminded him how grateful he was to have TK in his life. Carlos couldn't imagine his life any other way.

"Papa-bro, are you talking to Lou again?" Jonah's innocent voice broke through Carlos's thoughts. Both men turned toward the small corner of the loft, where Jonah sat cross-legged, crayons spread around him and his coloring book open in front of him. He stared curiously, his wide eyes filled with gentle curiosity.

Carlos smiled tenderly. It always amazed him how naturally Jonah fit into their lives. Jonah and TK shared such an instinctive bond, especially in their love for animals. Carlos often marveled at how similarly the two reacted whenever they saw a dog on the street or squirrels scampering across the park. Their matching grins and squeals of delight always warmed his heart.

"Yeah, Jojo," TK called back, smiling gently. "He loves when I talk to him. Come say hi!"

Jonah hesitated, carefully setting down his crayon, shifting nervously. "Um… Hi, Lou," he finally managed, his small voice cautious and hesitant.

Carlos watched as TK’s expression shifted slightly, a tiny crease forming between his brows as he frowned in gentle confusion. Carlos understood immediately—he'd noticed it, too. For a boy who fearlessly cuddled every puppy he encountered and chased butterflies until he was breathless with laughter, Jonah seemed oddly wary of their small reptilian family member. Carlos could almost hear TK’s thoughts, could feel his husband's gentle bewilderment at Jonah’s hesitation.

Leaning closer, Carlos murmured teasingly into TK's ear, "Looks like your ally in animal worship has finally betrayed you, babe. Welcome to the dark side, Jonah."

TK playfully elbowed Carlos’s ribs, unable to hide the affectionate smile tugging at his lips.

"Traitors, both of you," TK grumbled softly, though his eyes sparkled warmly as he glanced back at Carlos.

"It was bound to happen sooner or later." Carlos chuckled, placing a quick kiss on TK’s cheek. "Face it—your little reptile empire is crumbling."

TK shook his head, laughing softly under his breath. "Careful, Carlos. I might just make Lou II sleep on your pillow tonight."

Carlos shuddered exaggeratedly, eyes wide with feigned horror. "Do that and I'll move in with Bunny."

Jonah watched them curiously, head tilted slightly at his fathers’ playful exchange.

"Papa, why are you moving in with Bunny?" Jonah asked innocently, confusion etched into his small features.

Carlos grinned softly, walking over to ruffle Jonah's curly hair affectionately. "Because Papa-bro likes Lou II better than me, buddy, and Bunny doesn't try to scare me."

Jonah giggled brightly, shaking his head. "Papa, you're silly! Bunny can't talk!"

Carlos gasped dramatically, clutching his chest once more. "Are you telling me I’d be lonely without Papa-bro’s constant chatter?"

Jonah nodded seriously, eyes big and earnest. "Yes, Papa. You need Papa-bro. And me too, right?"

Carlos felt his heart melt instantly, pulling Jonah into a quick, gentle hug. "Always, buddy. You two are my favorite chatterboxes."

Jonah beamed proudly, clearly satisfied by his father's reassurance.

From his spot on the couch, TK grinned victoriously, clearly pleased with himself. "See, babe? You can't win against the two of us."

Carlos chuckled quietly, rolling his eyes again. "Fine, fine. But Jonah and I still aren’t joining Team Lizard anytime soon."

TK laughed warmly, eyes softening as he met Carlos’s gaze. In that look was everything Carlos had ever hoped for—comfort, warmth, acceptance, and unwavering love. It reminded him exactly why he'd faced down every fear and doubt to be with this man, to build a life and family together.

"Come closer, buddy," TK coaxed gently, standing up and reaching into the terrarium. Carefully, he scooped Lou II into his palm, smiling softly as the tiny lizard blinked slowly.

Carlos cringed internally but kept his discomfort well-hidden, amused as he watched the unfolding scene. Jonah eyed the lizard warily as he approached TK.

"He won't bite, Jojo. Promise," TK said reassuringly, kneeling slowly so Jonah could have a closer look.

Jonah bit his lower lip, his wide brown eyes filled with apprehension as he inched forward slightly. "Is he slimy, Papa-bro?"

TK laughed lightly. "No, he's actually really smooth, like your toy cars. Want to touch him?"

Jonah swallowed hard, nodding bravely despite his obvious hesitation. He slowly reached out one small finger, but just as Lou II shifted his tiny head, Jonah yelped in surprise, tears instantly springing to his eyes as he darted away, sobbing loudly.

"Papa! Papa!" Jonah cried, sprinting straight into Carlos’s waiting arms.

Carlos caught him easily, scooping him protectively into a tight embrace. His heart clenched at the sound of Jonah's distress. He loved Jonah fiercely, determined never to let him feel unsafe or unloved. The thought of failing him terrified Carlos more than anything, and he'd vowed the moment Jonah had come into their lives that he'd always protect him, always ensure his happiness.

"Hey, buddy, it's okay. Papa's got you," Carlos soothed gently, rubbing Jonah’s back comfortingly.

TK looked stricken, guilt flashing across his face as he quickly returned Lou II to his enclosure. "Oh no, Jojo, I'm sorry! I didn’t mean to scare you," TK apologized, approaching slowly, concern etched deeply into his face.

Jonah peeked up at TK from Carlos’s shoulder, cheeks flushed and damp. "It's okay, Papa-bro. Lou just surprised me," Jonah sniffled quietly, burying his head deeper into Carlos’s neck.

Carlos chuckled softly, kissing Jonah’s dark curls affectionately. "See, babe, I told you—Jonah and I finally have something in common. Not everyone loves your tiny dinosaur."

TK pouted dramatically, crossing his arms in mock-offense. "Lou II is sensitive, Carlos. Don't hurt his feelings," TK huffed playfully, trying to lighten the mood again.

Carlos laughed warmly, shaking his head fondly. "You realize you're talking about a reptile, right?" he teased.

"He's our son, Carlos," TK retorted stubbornly.

Jonah giggled softly at their playful banter, relaxing slightly in Carlos’s secure hold.

"Papa, do you really not like Lou?" Jonah whispered, lifting his head curiously.

Carlos smiled down gently, his expression softening as he brushed hair from Jonah’s forehead. "Well, he’s definitely not my favorite, but if he makes Papa-bro happy, then I guess he’s okay. How about you? Still scared?"

Jonah thought for a moment, nose scrunching adorably as he considered the question seriously. "Maybe just a little," Jonah admitted shyly, snuggling closer into Carlos’s chest. "But I still wanna say hi to him from far away, okay?"

TK grinned brightly, relieved Jonah wasn't completely traumatized. "That sounds fair to me, Jojo," he agreed softly. "But if you ever change your mind, Lou will always be there."

Jonah nodded quietly, eyes heavy with exhaustion from the brief scare.

"Nap time?" Carlos suggested gently, already heading towards Jonah’s cozy corner of the living room, partitioned by colorful dividers Jonah himself had decorated with countless crayon drawings and family photos.

Jonah yawned, nestling deeper into Carlos’s arms. "Yeah, Papa. Can you read me a story?"

"Of course, buddy," Carlos murmured lovingly.

TK followed behind, pausing briefly to give Lou II a reassuring pat on the glass before joining his little family. Jonah settled into Carlos' chest, eyes already drooping as Carlos sat on his bed, gently smoothing his son’s curls.

Carlos leaned close, whispering warmly into Jonah’s ear. "I’ll tell you a secret, Jojo. Papa-bro may have a scary lizard, but at least we have each other."

Jonah giggled softly, snuggling tightly against Carlos. "Yeah, Papa. We’re a team."

TK pretended to pout again, though he felt his heart swell warmly. Seeing Carlos and Jonah bonding, even at his playful expense, was everything he'd ever wanted. He leaned over, pressing soft kisses on both their foreheads.

"Okay, you two troublemakers. Rest up, because Lou II and I might just team up against you next time."

Carlos reached for TK’s hand, intertwining their fingers warmly. "I love you," Carlos whispered tenderly, gratitude and affection filling every word.

TK squeezed his hand gently. "I love you too. Even if you don't fully appreciate our firstborn son."

Carlos allowed himself a quiet smile, watching TK’s tender gaze at Lou II — a reminder of all the reasons he’d fallen in love with this man: his tenderness, compassion, and his remarkable capacity to love openly.

He remembered how, in moments of doubt, TK’s presence alone made the world clearer and easier to navigate. When he first gathered the courage to ask TK to dance at that honky-tonk, Carlos never imagined it would lead to this — a life filled with laughter, steady love, and the family he’d always dreamed of.

Now, he had everything he’d ever dared hope for: a husband who cherished him unconditionally, and a child he loved fiercely. Carlos glanced down at Jonah, his heart swelling with tenderness. Jonah’s breathing grew steady and slow as he nestled deeper against Carlos’s chest, his eyelids finally closing in peaceful slumber. The sight steadied Carlos’s own heart, reminding him how important his role had become — not just as a husband, but as a father determined to never let Jonah doubt his love or commitment.

You okay?” TK’s voice was soft, filled with affection as he rested a gentle hand on Carlos’s shoulder, pulling him from his thoughts.

Carlos smiled warmly, meeting TK’s concerned gaze. "More than okay. Just thinking how lucky we are — even if our oldest child is a scaly dinosaur who terrifies the youngest member of the family."

TK chuckled, the warmth in his laughter reassuring. "You know, for someone who claims to dislike Lou, you sure bring him up a lot. I think you secretly love him."

"Oh, please." Carlos scoffed quietly, careful not to wake Jonah. "I’m just fascinated by your unhealthy attachment to reptiles. And here I thought I'd married someone with good taste."

TK grinned playfully, eyes sparkling. "Clearly your judgment isn’t as flawless as you thought, Reyes. After all, you picked me."

"Best decision I ever made, honestly," Carlos replied without hesitation, sincerity shining in his eyes. "You might have questionable taste in pets, but your taste in husbands? Impeccable."

TK laughed softly, shaking his head fondly as he leaned in to kiss Carlos gently, savoring the moment. "You're a dork, and I love you for it."

Carlos smiled tenderly, adjusting his hold on Jonah, who was now peacefully asleep. He let his gaze sweep around their loft, taking in Jonah’s colorful drawings, the cozy blankets, and finally Lou II in his glass home. Despite his teasing, Carlos knew deep down how much Lou meant to TK — and to their family. He wouldn’t change a thing.

"You know, I guess I can tolerate Lou II a little longer," Carlos said with a mock-serious tone, drawing an amused look from TK. "But only because you’re adorable when you fuss over him."

TK grinned smugly. "See? I knew you loved him. Admit it, Carlos, you’re attached."

Carlos rolled his eyes, laughing softly. "Careful, babe. Keep that up and I might just move in with Bunny."

TK chuckled, settling next to Carlos and resting his head against his shoulder. Their hands stayed intertwined, warm and steady. They sat quietly, the calm of the afternoon wrapping around them as Jonah’s gentle snores filled the space.

Finally, TK sighed contentedly, squeezing Carlos’s hand. "I wouldn’t trade this for anything, Carlos. Even your lizard complaints."

Carlos pressed a soft kiss into TK’s hair. "Me neither, Ty. This — us — it’s everything I ever wanted. Even Lou II."

TK hummed quietly, eyes closing as he relaxed into Carlos’s side, their little family wrapped in warmth and quiet affection. Carlos felt his heart steady in a way it never had before. No matter what came their way, he knew they would face it together — teasing, loving, and supporting each other through every adventure, big or small.
