Chapter 1: Chapter One: Move In Day

Chapter Text

Autumn cool air blowing through your fingers as the wind takes control over the temperature of your hand. Watching as your hand moves up and down, the tips of your fingers become tingly due to the coldness. Every inch of skin is being touched by the air becoming colder, the air blowing through your hair making it wild and out of place.

“How are you not cold? Jeez, the air is hurting my legs; move your arm.” You quickly move your arm back into the car. As your mother rolls up your window, cutting off the cold air and trapping you in the warmth of the car’s heater.

“I was hot.” You reply plainly.

“Hot!? I will never understand how you stay hot all year round! I don’t know where you get that from.” Your mother turns up the heat, wanting to warm up her hurting legs. The passenger seat’s vent always stays closed. You never open it in the winter; it's too damn hot for the heat. Sliding more to the passenger’s door, expressing that the heat is getting to you. But your attempt went unnoticed. Laying your head against the window to feel the coldness, ever so subtle coldness against your skin.

“Get your head off the window! You're going to get smudges on it!” Lifting your head and looking at the window to see if you did leave a mark. You did, damn. Hearing a small gasp from your mother, "You did! You're going to clean that!” A smack from your lips and a roll of your eyes: “But I am hot though.” You whine.

“Okay?! You are always hot, and you know not to touch my windows! My legs are hurting from the cold.” Your mother points to the compartment that is between the two of you. You open the compartment to pull out a yellow rag and a small bottle of Windex. You closed the compartment while you spoke, “I still think you should tape heating pads to your legs.” You spray the Windex bottle once on the smudge before wiping the window clean. “I am not doing that!?”

“Why not? Keep your legs warm.” You open the compartment hopefully for the last time today and put the rag and Windex away. Your mother gives you a look, like you are crazy. Or she is getting closer to pulling over and beating your ass. “How about you wear bags of ice to keep you cold?”

“Gladly.” Folding your arms as you turn your gaze back to the front window. “I… I will remember that.” She points at you as she keeps her eyes on the road ahead of you guys. Silence falls on you guys once again, the radio playing the same music you heard over and over again. Your mother never bothers to change the station, but if you try to, she will slap your hand.

The road goes from fields of dead yellow grass that are obviously not being taken care of to brown grass that is changing due to the season. Healthy trees with yellow and orange leaves, their roots covered by their once green leaves. Passing through a dark tunnel now entering the town. On your mom’s side, you were passing a police station and hospital. Coming to a quick stop at a stop sign before turning to the left and passing a library. Which is spelled wrong. It's spelled “librarby”. I don't know how to pronounce that, but okay. As you approach another stop sign, you can see a pizza place and a diner in front of you. Across the street is a building called Sans… interesting. So far you have only seen monsters walking around. Where are the humans? You turn to your mom, looking at her. Unsure how to word your question, you open your mouth to speak, but nothing comes out. Getting annoyed with yourself, you finally just speak. “Mom… where are the humans in this town?”

“What do you mean?” Your mother asks while turning right and parking in front of your new house.

“I have only seen monsters.” You explain more. Your mother shrugs her shoulders. “Maybe at home, I don’t know.” You look at your mother before looking away, mainly looking out the front window. You hear your mom pop the trunk: Come on, let’s get started.”

Grabbing the first box for your bedroom and walking into your new house for the first time. The house was perfect for you and your mother; it was small and cozy. Walking into the front door, you are met with the living room and the kitchen to your right. The living room was the biggest area in the house. Looking out a window to see you have a back porch, it looks to be the second biggest room. Getting back on task, you walk past the small kitchen, entering what could probably be called a hallway. It’s nowhere near long enough to be a hallway; it's just a box. A big cabinet that is probably going to be filled with blankets or towels… maybe both, knowing your mother. There is a door next to the big cabinet you go to open, it’s the bathroom. Closing the bathroom door, you open the next door, which is your bedroom door.

Pretty decent room size, two windows, and the left wall is your closet. Placing your box down, you were startled by your mom yelling your name. “Come meet our neighbor!” Her voice echoes through the empty house. “Coming!” You yell back before leaving your room. Walking back into the living room, you see your mom, and GOD DAMN. A large goat man standing in your living room. Trying to hide your expressions to not seem rude. As the man looks harmless, his smile is too sweet to be scared of his height. “Mommy, this is Asgore. He is the owner of the flower shop that is across the street.”

“Hi, nice to meet you!” You speak awkwardly, speaking fast, trying to hide the shakiness in your voice. A soft chuckle comes from the monster before he holds a hand out to you. “Howdy, nice to meet you too.” Taking his hand as he gives you a gentle handshake, not wanting to harm your smaller hand. “Welcome to the neighborhood; it’s nice to see more people moving into town.” Asgore's hand was much larger than yours, warm and soft. The feeling lingered on your hand as you let go. You put your hand awkwardly next to your side with a smile. “It looks like such a nice town. It’s beautiful here.” Your mother says, Continuing the conversation.

Not really into meeting new people, you start to zone out, not really caring for the very boring talk the two adults were having. Deciding to just move on by getting more boxes out of the car. “Uhhh…” you say, getting the two’s attention. Nervously looking between them before speaking, “I…I am going to continue to get more boxes.” You say, pointing to the front door. “Okay, Mommy, don’t push yourself too hard.” A quick ‘okay’ while you headed for the front door. Looking at the sky, you can tell the sun will be going down soon; the air feels colder than it was when you first arrived. Not looking forward to sleeping on the floor, but the moving truck won’t arrive until tomorrow with your furniture. Returning to the open trunk, you go to grab a box, but you catch something in the corner of your eye. Something bright, looking up to see… a human. They were standing in front of Asgore’s flower shop. Can’t fully tell if they are looking at you since their hair is covering their eyes. But their body is facing your direction; guess you weren't the only humans here. To be nice, you waved your hand and smiled at them.

Their hand slowly picks up as they wave back. Such a bright sweater… green and yellow are definitely a combo. Okay, let’s get back on track. You can still feel their eyes on you, and it’s making you nervous. Wanting to just go back inside and get away from their gaze. You grab a box, not caring what the label is and take it inside.

—

Walking inside, you closed the front door with your back as you walked backwards against it. Asgore calls out to you as he approaches; he grabs the box in your arms. “You know I have a son around your age.”

“Really?” You say, looking up at the monster.

“Mhm. They are my adopted son; they are also human. I think you two would get along. Would you like to meet them?” Asgore smiled down at you, sounding proud to have found another human for his son to have playdates with. “Yeah, honey, you were worried about being the only human in town. You guys should get to know each other.”

“Uh, yeah! I… would like to meet them.” Meeting more people was not what you wanted, but maybe it would be good to know another human who lived here longer than you. But jeez, you did not feel like talking to more people. In your head you are imagining choking yourself out for agreeing. “Great! I will go get them; I will be right back!” You watch as Asgore leaves out the front door and closes it behind him.

Your mother holds a cold water bottle for you to grab. Taking it and opening it and taking a sip from it. “He said he is divorced,” your mother says. “Oh…cool.” You say idly as you place the water on a nearby box. “Want a stepbrother?” Slowly turn your head with wide eyes to face her as your mother stands there on business. “No, woman. No. We just got here. We are not even fully moved in yet.” You wave your hands around, expressing how very empty it is in here. Your mother scoffs, “He owns a business; we will be taken care of.”

“You don’t even know how successful his shop is.” You cross your arms as you raise your eyebrow at her.

“He does all the plant work around town.” Not convinced. You stay looking at her as if she lost her mind.

“He still has a kid to take care of. Maybe even more than just that one, you know.” Your mother rolls her eyes. She is starting to get frustrated with you. Why can’t you just see her side? How come you never go along with her plans? “You are so ungrateful. I am trying to make life easier for you.” You look away for a second before returning to her. She can’t be serious. “Oh great, here we go again.” You throw your hand in the air before walking in the direction of your room. “You just think I am a bad mom! Don’t you?!” Your mother yelled at you, but since your back was facing her, you were imitating her. “I see you mimicking me!”

“No, I wasn’t.” You said it plainly before turning to face your mother, trying to play it off. “Girl, don’t lie to me.” She spoke sternly. Silence falls upon the two of you. A stare-down as you stay still, contemplating if you should talk back or just let it go as usual. But you are feeling brave. New home, new town… Maybe a new approach to your mother’s ways. “Don’t make me put my hands on you. Tell me the truth.”

“Come touch me then.” You say keep your eyes on hers. Your voice trembles, or was it your body? Either way it felt like both, but as your heart pounds, yelling to not follow through, you stay persistent. Her eyebrows furrowed as she processed what you had said to her. “Come on! Touch me!” You yell as you slap your chest trying to get something out of your mother. “Girl, shut the fuck up before—” The door creaked open, startling you and your mom. You and your mother scrambled to seem normal. “Sorry, I took too long. I was getting a welcome gift before I got Kris.” Asgore chuckled nervously as he walked in with a vase filled with flowers and, of course, a human teen. “Oh! No, it's no problem.” Your mother waves a dismissive hand at Asgore. “And flowers!? You didn’t have to!” You watch as your mother walks over to Asgore, arms open to grab the flowers.

“Oh, they are so beautiful!” Blush appears on Asgore’s cheeks as he watches your mom admire the flowers. Your body is still high on adrenaline, but you are taking quiet deep breaths to calm yourself. You never understood how your mother could just switch like that, but the devil blessed her with the ability to do so. From what you could tell, the flowers were beautiful; even the vase was perfectly picked to go along with the flowers. Red anemones, red lilies, red roses, and red chrysanthemums. The anemones have a little bit of white to balance out all the red. The vase is black with a white bow tied around it. Looking like Christmas but still nice. “Oh, golly… I am glad you like the flowers. When you said red was your favorite color. I thought red flowers would look nice in your new house.”

“Well, they are perfect… Thank you, Asgore.” As you thought the interaction was done, your mom did the unspeakable. Because why did you think your mother was done?! Holding the vase in one arm as she uses her other to grab Asgore by his shirt. Pulling him down to her level, giving the monster a kiss on the cheek. A gasp left your lips as you stared in disbelief. Forgetting about Kris until they did the same as you. Both you and Kris looked at each other, unsure what to do about what just happened in front of you guys. Asgore’s eyes are as wide as yours and Kris’s; he stumbles over his words trying to come up with a coherent sentence. “I…I…I…” Your mother just smiled at him innocently, playing it off as if she didn’t just kiss a man she just met. Asgore places a hand over his cheek that was kissed. “Thanks for the kiss, Miss.” Asgore finally spoke with a bright red face. Looking over at Kris to see if their reaction has changed. In fact, they are shooting daggers at your mother with their eyes. As much as you completely understand Kris' reaction, that's still your mother.

Walking over to Kris, you grab their hand and give it a nice handshake; their hand was cold as ice. A small stutter from you making a quick hi and introduction of your name, getting Kris’s attention. Crimson eyes stare down at you as you speak. Their eyes soften, almost surprised to see you. Like… how can you come from that woman? Their whole expression softens into curiosity as their head turns slightly… kinda like a dog. Have they never seen another human? Yes, their hands were cold, but they were also smooth. Long fingers… Maybe they play an instrument of some type. Also, they smell like a green apple; that sweater doesn’t help their case. “U…um, would you like to help me get some boxes out of the car?” You ask Kris, taking them out of the little trance they were in. Kris nods before taking you out the front door and straight to your mother's car. Kris didn’t realize they were holding your hand still, which prompted them to let go and put their hands in their pocket. They look away, trying to act nonchalant; if their hair wasn’t in the way, you could still see the faint blush on their cheeks. You found it cute in a way, like a little kid liking an older kid to hang out with. Even though this ‘little kid’ was in fact much taller than you. But that does not matter; they were endearing, and it’s like fresh air to your lungs.

“You don’t talk much, do you?” You ask softly. Kris’s eyes return to you before shaking their head no. “That’s fine; I like the sound of my voice sometimes.” You say before giggling to yourself. Kris even cracked a smile. “Uh, so every box is labeled.” You turn to the open trunk. “So I feel like we would just have to put the boxes in their respective rooms. And we be done.” You clap your hands together before you turn back to Kris. “Questions, comments, or concerns?” Kris smirked a little, trying to hide a full smile. They also find you amusing; they can tell you are also equally awkward as them. They shake their head no before taking his hands out of his pockets to grab his first box. You follow behind, grabbing a box as well..

After a few hours passed, the four of you finished taking the boxes out of your mother’s car. There wasn’t a lot of unboxing to do, since most of it were smaller items and objects. Currently you and Kris are sitting on the ground in the back porch. It’s closed in with big windows; you can tell this is going to be the room you hang out in when doing homework or personal projects.

Kris and you were playing Uno to pass the time when your mother peeked her head in. “Hey, kiddos. I and Asgore are going to get pizza for dinner, mkay? We will be right back.” Kris gives your mother a thumbs up before placing a card down; it was a plus four. “Oh dude, really? How do you keep getting those? And okay, don’t be weird to him.” You give a cheeky smile at your mother, knowing she knows what you mean. “Don’t start, or you won’t eat dinner.” Your mother slams the door shut. You sigh before grabbing four cards from the deck. “I am sorry about my mom. She is weird. She is trying to get at your dad.” You say as you place a color-changing card. “Um… yellow. She does that pretty often… kind of the reason we moved towns.” Kris has been watching your expression while you were talking; they are upset that your mom is hitting on their dad, but from what you said. You have no control over it, and you seem pretty frustrated with it. Kris places a yellow card down, allowing you to go again.

“When your dad left to go get you… My mom got into an argument with me. She thinks we would be set if she got with him. I don’t know, is your dad’s shop successful?” Before you could place a card down, you heard snickering. You look up to see Kris with a hand on their mouth trying to keep themself from laughing. A smile appears on your face as you watch Kris struggle. “Why are you laughing? Dude, you are turning red.” You start giggling in between words. “Is his shop doing that badly?” Kris nods their head as they finally let themself laugh. Kris takes a deep breath before fully laughing, laughing to the point they start coughing. Putting your cards to the side as you crawled over to them, patting their back and helping them breathe again. Grabbing their nearby water bottle, you open it for them to drink from. Kris finally calms down, grabbing their water from your hands. Your hands brushed against each other, making Kris's breath hitch. “Well, at least I know you are not mad at me about my mom. Are you cool now?” Kris nods their head. Yeah, they don’t like your mom, but can’t they hate you? You are cool to them.

“Um, my mom is going to enroll in the school soon. Maybe we could walk there together when she does. I haven't had a chance to explore the town yet, so I don’t know where it is yet.” Kris nods their head with a small smile, giving you a thumbs up. Suddenly the door swings open. “Kris! Oh, there you are. Uh, come on, I have to take you home now.” Asgore looked like he was embarrassed. You and Kris stand up. “He has to go home now?” Asgore’s face looks sad to have to take Kris home. He can tell you and Kris were having fun and getting along. “Yes, I am sorry. It’s getting late, and Kris has school tomorrow. Come on now… before her mother comes back, please.”

“Bye, Kris. Maybe we can hang out after school.“ Kris sadly waves bye to you as they follow their father out the door. Minutes later your mother comes in with drinks and pizza. From that little comment Asgore made… You know your mom tried it with him. As you looked at your mother, anger rose in you. You were just making a friend, and because your mother can’t keep her legs closed, you probably can’t hang out with them now. Because yes, let’s make the man who is helping us uncomfortable. “You just had to fuck it up, didn’t you?” You say filled with anger. What in God’s name is wrong with her? “Excuse me? What did you say to me?” A dramatic grunt comes from you. “We just got here; we are not even fully moved in yet. Couldn’t you just leave him alone!”

Your mom walks into the small kitchen to place down the pizza and sodas. “You are getting brave because we live somewhere new. But hear my words, little girl…” Your mother walks closer to you. “I am your mother, and I own you because I made you.” Your mother bends down a little to get closer to your face. Your noses are almost touching, just centimeters away from each other. Breathing heavily as you stare into her eyes, you can see the want for control in them. “I may have come from you, but you don’t own SHIT!” You whip around, running to your room. Slamming your door closed and locking it. Your mother was following behind but not close enough. “Open this damn door!” Your mother yelled as she banged on your door. You watch as she jingles the doorknob. You can’t stay here, not when your mother wants to choke you out. You look around your partially empty room; there really was nothing for you. You could hide in your closet, but that means you stay here, and you don’t really want to do that. But lucky for you and not so lucky for your mom. She got a one-story house; let's go for a walk.

You never really snuck out before, so leaving through a window was new for you. You made sure that closing the window wasn’t loud to not alert your mother that you were in fact not inside. The town wasn’t very lit at night, but even then, the place was still cozy. Mom is going to destroy this place. As you listened for anything… The main thing you could hear was running water. You were curious as to why it sounded so huge, so you followed the sound of running water. Oh my God, how did you not see the big-ass waterfall when you drove up!? It’s beautiful and peaceful. The closer you got to the waterfall, the more the road changed into sand. You looked behind you to make sure your mom hadn’t spotted you. Nothing, it was just you and the running water. It was really chilly out, and the closer you got to the water, the air was freezing. But God, did it feel good. Taking off your sandals, you walked into the water. The water was ice cold. Your feet tingled as you stayed in the water; you were hot all day, and this just took away any sweat on your body. Crouching down, you watched as the small fishes swam by your feet, paying you no mind. The fishes are used to the people of this town taking a swim in their water.

Guess the water isn’t that cold for them yet. The fishes swam around your ankles, seeming to be having fun with the new person in their waters. So engrossed in the cold water and the fishes, you didn’t hear when someone was approaching. “Are you not cold?” You practically jumped when you heard whoever spoke. The fishes swam away after you let out a startled scream. Turning your head quickly to see yet another large figure. Are all monsters here large? “Uh… no…” You say, as you slowly turn around to face the tall figure. They walk closer, letting you get a better look. A reptile-looking girl stands before you. Dark brown hair that covers her eyes, leaving her snout out. She wears a purple cardigan over a white tee with ripped blue jeans. “I thought humans were sensitive to the cold.” The water made soft splashes as you walked closer to the land. “I mean, mostly, yeah. But I like it; it is easy to make me hot.” You say, awkwardly as you try to see the monster’s eyes. “Yeah, you dressed like it’s summer. You humans are freaks, you know?” What? Where did that come from? “I mean… no one is the same.” The girl was caught off guard by your response. But she didn’t show it. She was going to speak again, but you beat her to it. “Want to join me?’ You ask her, extending your arm out to the water. Now she is really caught off guard… Why are you being kind to her? She just insulted you.

It was getting more awkward, so you moved your extended arm to her, holding your hand out to her. The girl stares at your hand… You can’t see her eyes, but she is looking. You were about to put your hand down when she grabbed it. “Bet, let me take off my shoes first.” You continue to hold her very large hand while the monster uses her free arm to take off her sneakers and socks. She throws them to the side where your sandals are at. She doesn’t bother pulling up her jeans as she joins you in the water. Her hand was cold from the weather, but it was rough to the touch. But somehow even though they were cold and rough… They were gentle. “Oh damn, this water is ice cold!” You giggle at the girl’s reaction. She struggled hard to not leave the water. “You're more of a badass than I thought… Jeez, I am not going to feel my feet after this.” The girl’s grip on your hand tightens. “Feels good though, huh?” You ask while looking up at her for her reaction. “Fuck, I would be lying if I said no. Does it really not hurt you?” You shake your head no. “It just makes my feet tingle.” The girl scoffs, “Yeah, you are weird. What are you even doing out here? It’s late.”

“I could ask the same thing.” You say, tilting your head in a friendly way. “I like late-night walks. How about you?” You can feel the cold breeze blowing softly through your hair. The monster’s hair also goes along with the air. “What if I said the same thing? Can’t a human enjoy her new town?”

The fishes slowly returned, swimming around your ankles and your new friend’s ankles. “I was just going to ask about that. I guess Kris isn’t the only human now.” You perk up hearing Kris’s name. “You know Kris?” This whole time you and the girl were still holding hands. You didn’t realize until you subconsciously squeezed her hand. Both your heads snap down to your intertwined fingers. She quickly takes her hand back before stuffing it into her jean pockets. She looks away before answering your question. “U…Uh, yeah! Kinda, we are in the same class, that’s why.” Didn’t you go through a similar situation with Kris? “Oh! That’s cool; I am yet to be enrolled. I haven't even got to see the whole town.” The girl turns back to you before grabbing you by your arm. “Would you like me to show you around? I have all night!” If you could see her eyes, you could see how genuinely happy she is to have more of a reason to hang out with you. Someone new, someone whose image of her isn't tainted. She might have a real friend for once. “I mean, I would say fuck it. But don’t you have school tomorrow?” You didn’t want to be the reason she was late or ended up not going. You would hate to be a bad influence on someone.

“Pppft—trust me, it’s no big deal! I always go late anyways. So come on!” The monster girl pulls you back to the sand out of the water. “Okay, fine, but!” You hold your pointer finger up to her. “If we are going to stay friends, you have to go to class on time.” You stay with a smug smile on your face as you look up at the large monster. The girl stares down at you, contemplating your words. “When you get enrolled?” You can’t help but laugh. “Fine!”

“Yes! Okay, let’s go!” She celebrated by putting her hand into a fist and pulling her arm back. You and she quickly grab your guys' shoes before heading down the street. No one was out besides the two of you. The town was silent, as the only thing to be heard was yours and the monster's laugh as you guys walked into the night.
