Chapter Text
James and Sirius were acting weird. Well, weirder than usual. They were spending a lot of time, too much time in Remus's opinion, in the library. Whenever Remus tried to join them, they would always make a feeble excuse to leave, grabbing all the books they had previously been poring over with them.
It had gotten to the point where James had even stopped asking Lily out, and Sirius hadn’t so much as thrown a dungbomb at Snape. Remus was practically dying to find out what they were doing, so when he came into the common room one night after curfew to find the two boys alone, oblivious to his presence, he knew it was time to act.
They were bent over books upon books, whispering as Remus slowly walked over to them. Once behind them, he noticed a gold chain in Sirius’s hand. On the chain, a small hourglass sat spinning slowly between two rings. A time turner. Without any hesitation, Remus reaches out and snatches it from Sirius’s hand.
“ WHAT THE FUCK?! ” Sirius and James both whirl around and start to pull out their wands, but stop after realizing it was Remus.
“R emus! Moony! ” Sirius scrambles up and reaches for the time turner, but Remus backs away.
“W here the fuck did you get this? ” James and Sirius exchanged a panicked look. “ Why the fuck do you have this ?”
“R emus, it is nothing! Just a fake! ” Sirius said hurriedly.
“Y ea! ” James agreed, his voice high.
“O h well, if it really is nothing… ” Remus walked over to the fireplace, dangling the chain above it. “ You won’t mind if I get rid of it then, " he said, letting the chain slip further and further through his fingers.
“N O! ” James and Sirius both reach out to catch the chain, but Remus stops it before it falls through his hand.
“S o, ” he twisted it around his fingers, ” where did you get it ?”
There was silence as the two exchanged panicked looks until James finally spoke.
“W e bought it off some guy in the village .”
“A nd why did you buy it ?”
“W e wanted to study it. ”
Remus raised an eyebrow. “ Study it ?”
“Y es! ”
Remus rolled his eyes. “ You truly expect me to believe you bought a time turner just to study it? ” Sirius opened his mouth to respond, but Remus continued, “ I think that you two thought it would be funny to go back in time with a time-turner, which, let me add, is extremely illegal and can land you right in Azkaban, most likely for the reason of finding some dirt on Snape. ” He watched as James and Sirius’s jaws dropped, “ So how close was I ?”
“M erlin, Remus, are you a legilimens ?”
“N o, you two are just very predictable. ”
“S o, can we have it back? ” Sirius said hopefully.
“Y ou must be stupider than you look if you think I am giving this back to you .”
“B ut Remus-, ” James whined, but Remus cut him off before he could finish.
“D o you know how dangerous this is? One false move in the past can change everything we know !”
Sirius opened his mouth to retort but froze as the pendant started to spin in Remus’s hand.
The last thing Remus heard was James’s , WHAT THE FUCK?! Before the room around him had changed completely.
