Chapter Text
You’d think that summer would make walking outside at night on empty street feel less dreadful - I mean since summer was all about fun, going out or whatever. But no, it was somehow worse than winter. It was quieter for some reason and the only difference was how hot and humid the air was despite it being night time.
Finally, I got to the convenience store after that dreaded walk. I wasn’t here for something specific, or even technically important, I just wanted snacks to eat.
I stood in front of the noodles aisle glancing over each row, trying to decide which flavor I wanted this time before grabbing the one I usually got, Buldak carbonara, and headed towards the drinks aisle.
As I turned to go to the drinks aisle, I felt myself slam into something, or rather someone, someone who was much taller than me. He made me drop my noodles and my phone too.
“Hey, are you stupid?” I scoffed at him as I got down on one knee to grab my stuff. He’d dropped what he was holding too but I really, really couldn’t care less. He was the one who should’ve been more careful about where he was going anyways.
“What the fuck did you just say?” He suddenly spoke.
I looked in front of me to see him leaning down on one knee too. He was grabbing his stuff, yet he wasn’t even looking at what he was grabbing. He even almost grabbed my noodles before I pulled them away and gave him a weird look.
His face was close to me, too. This jerk was crazy, I could almost feel his breath on my face.
“Do you have hearing problems too, by any chance? I asked if you were stupid.” I said, not moving away or letting the way he was terribly close affect me as I didn’t look away from his eyes.
Right after I spoke I suddenly saw something in his eyes change in a split second, it happened so fast and subtly, like a dragonfly flying past. I probably wouldn’t have even noticed it if I hadn’t been so focused on his eyes at that moment.
I couldn’t really tell what it was or what made it happen, at all. As I kept staring back at him since he wouldn’t look away, he suddenly had a slight grin on his face. It was a type of grin you’d have right before starting a fight with someone because you wanted to beat them up.
I finally managed to break eye contact with him and when I looked to the side, I saw glass bottles on the bottom shelf right next to us. If I could grab one really fast, I might have a chance to smash it right into his head so he’d fucking leave me alone. I then looked back up, looking into his eyes and he was annoyingly focused on me and where I’d been looking just a moment ago.
If I really wanted to smash that bottle into his head I’d have to be insanely, impossibly fast, I thought as I looked back at the bottles on the shelf in a more subtle way, then back at him.
“What, are you gonna smash my head with that?” He said, his grin getting wider as if the thought of getting his skull smashed excited him or something. What a stupid guy.
A few seconds passed with me not answering him, and us just staring at each other before he swiftly grabbed the two drinks he’d dropped and got up, holding his hand out to me yet still grinning. How stupid was he? Who would take his hand when he was grinning at them like that?
I thought, before, well, grabbing his hand. Whatever, sometimes it’s better not to think much about what you’re doing. I then walked past him, our arms slightly touching. When I got to the other aisle I realized I wanted drinks. I’d just left the drinks aisle.
Well, it was too awkward to go back. I didn’t want to see that stupid guy with his stupid glasses and stupid grin again. I waited for a few seconds before looking over towards the front of the convenience store and he was at the payment counter, thank God. I quickly walked back to the drinks aisle and grabbed a bottle of Sprite.
But just as I was about to head to the payment counter since he’d left, I felt myself step on something and when I looked down and moved my foot I realized it was a phone.
That stupid guy from earlier must’ve dropped it when he bumped into me and forgot to pick it up since he was so busy grinning. Well, since he’d left without it I guess there was nothing I could do - but for some reason I leaned down and picked it up, what? I wasn’t stealing it. I didn’t want or need a new phone whatsoever but if someone else found it they’d probably steal it and never give it back. I was gonna see if he was around when I left the store, I was just such a considerate person, right? Well, I guess it was also since if he realized he didn’t have his phone, he’d probably blame me for stealing it and if it really got stolen by someone else I’d be doomed.
I shoved it into my pocket absentmindedly before heading to the counter and paying for my things. When I walked out of the store I looked around for a bit but he was literally nowhere, even tho he’d just left like, 4 minutes ago. It was annoyingly dark so I just started walking home instead of looking for him more.
I’d come back tomorrow and see if he was here, I mean, if you forgot your phone obviously you’d come back and this wasn’t some huge supermarket that people visited from all over the place so he probably lived nearby. I really don’t know why I picked his phone, it really annoyed me now that I was really thinking about it. I didn’t want to see that stupid guy let alone waste my time looking for him, but there was nothing I could do now.
If I didn’t find him at the store tomorrow I’d just give it to the worker there and then it’d be really none of my business.
