Work Text:
“hi,” chika smiled nervously at the camera. the microphone picked up the telltale sound of a lamp being switched on as chika moved her hand just to the side of the camera. a warm light illuminated one side of her face, making it the only light in the room. aside from the lamp, pitch black surrounded her, and even the windows didn’t have any light leaking in from them.
riko quietly typed away on the other side of the video call. her phone camera was angled upwards towards her face in a way that she wasn’t directly making eye contact with the lens like chika was. instead, her eyes were focused on her monitor, doing whatever work she still had to do.
the differences between their backgrounds were day and night, literally. riko still had the soft afternoon light behind her, while the sun had set for chika a long time ago.
“what are you doing up?” riko asked, glancing down at her phone screen for a split second before bringing her attention back to the computer monitor.
cihka didn’t answer immediately. she was too busy looking at(admiring) riko. the other girl was wearing her glasses, which she didn’t wear often so chika was simply getting her fill. they were maroon colored but with hints of brown mixed into them, like tiger stripes, and were rectangular shaped but also slightly rounded so they didn’t look too boxy. they were very riko, chika thought.
“what did you say?” she smiled again, the nervousness fading away this time. riko seemed to have rolled her eyes fondly, before repeating the question.
“is the sleep getting to you? isn’t it 4am there?”
“well,” chika hesitated, knowing that her girlfriend was probably about to scold her for staying up so late. “i missed you so i wanted to see you.”
riko sputtered, faking a cough while bringing her hand to her mouth to cover her face (and her cheeks which were quickly turning red). riko fake glared at the camera, embarrassment in her voice. “shush, you don’t get to say those things while you’re half-asleep.”
“ehh, but it’s true,” chika whined, pouting slightly when riko angled the camera towards the ceiling to hide her face completely.
“go to sleep.”
“hmm, i can’t yet though.”
“are you jet lagged?” riko brought herself back into view, her microphone making sounds when her fingers brushed against it.
“i guess,” chika hummed to herself, scratching her chin as she thought about it. “well, i’ve never been jet lagged before so i’m not sure.”
chika looked to the side, lowering her voice. “or, i guess i’m just scared.”
“hm?” riko raised an eyebrow at the statement. “what are you scared of? the dark?”
“no, nothing like that.” chika chuckled at the assumption.
well, you are the embodiment of sunshine, the dark should be nothing for you, riko thought to herself.
“then what?”
“well, i was thinking since i’m gonna be here with yō and ruby for the next few months, i was just thinking that maybe whenever i’d start waking up, all of you would be asleep by then. and whenever i’m asleep, you’d all be awake and we’d keep missing each other.”
riko hummed in understanding as chika kept going. “and, it’s not like i’m gonna get bored of their company or anything, but.” chika slumped back in her chair. “i’m really going to start missing yours.”
“i’ll be missing your company too,” riko said. “but it’s not like we will have zero contact or anything.”
“what do you mean?”
“like, we still have a lot of time to talk. during the morning, for example. it will be early morning around 7am for you and evening 7pm for me, you don’t have to sacrifice your sleep schedule like this when there’s still chances for us to talk.”
“hmm,” chika hummed, starting to see the flaws in her thinking.
“are you okay now? can you sleep?”
“yeah, thanks riko,” chika smiled at riko, and the girl could swear she felt her heart skip a beat.
playing it cool, she took on a stern tone. “now go to sleep. it’s already like 5, don’t you have an interview today?”
chika looked at the clock on the corner of her screen, her eyes widening as she saw the time at 5:02am. “shit,” she cursed to herself. riko chuckled at the reaction.
“go to sleep now, goodnight.” riko made a shoo-ing motion with her hand, but instead of logging off, chika pouted.
“where’s my i love you?” she whined.
riko rolled her eyes, though a small smile tugged at her lips. “i love you, goodnight. you better sleep right now or else i’m telling kanan.”
chika let out a gasp, “you wouldn’t.”
“i would,” riko challenged. “i’ll tell dia, too.”
“no!” chika put her hands on her heart, leaning back in her chair slightly. “i can’t believe i’d be betrayed like this. to think it was by my own beloved too…”
“go to sleep, okay? i’ll still be here when you wake up. it’ll only be like 8 or 9pm here after all.”
“okay,” chika finally relented, giving a warm smile to riko. “i love you, goodnight.”
riko returned it, adding a wave. “love you.”
there was a beep shortly after, signifying the call’s end.

chikacchi started a call that lasted an hour
riko smiled to herself. sure, they may be separated by an entire ocean, and they may currently be on the opposite sides of the world. but they would always be together in spirit and in heart.
as long as they shared the same sky, everything would be alright.
