Work Text:
Keum Seongje was a fucking idiot.
That's Ji Hakho's thoughts when he finds him collapsed in an alley with a stab wound to the stomach, and the culprit beaten unconscious next to him. Knowing Seongje, the fucker didn't dodge the knife on purpose. The knife was removed from the wound - whether by the assailant or by Seongje himself is unknown - so he is bleeding a lot.
Hakho took off his jacket and tied it tightly around Seongje's wound. He hoists him on his back and sprinted. It would take too long for an ambulance to get there and the roads are narrow and tricky. It's faster if Hakho brought him to the hospital himself.
"I need help!" Hakho shouts when he bursts into the emergency room. "My friend was stabbed!"
Nurses take Seongje from him and laid him on a stretcher. "He's lost too much blood! Sir, do you know what his blood type is?!"
Without hesitation, Hakho held his arm out. "No, but I'm Type O. Give him my blood if needed!"
A universal donor. It doesn't matter what type Seongje is, Hakho will be able to donate his blood.
Hakho donates several bags of blood. Seongje was still in the operating room. Hakho sits in the hallway on the bench.
His phone buzzes. It's been vibrating for a while. Hakho ignored the calls. Calls from Kwon Hyeokjin. Calls from Hong Eunchan. Calls from Park Taegi. Calls from even his older brother, Ji Gwangseok. All ignored.
The nurses had called the cops. They took the hospital staffs' statement and then approached Hakho.
Hakho tried to speak, but his throat constricted. No words escaped. Voice trapped. With shaky hands, he writes down his statement. The alley he found Seongje in. The description of the culprit. The approximate time he stumbled across the gruesome scene.
The cops thanked him and left. No one cared for Hakho's mental state. No one truly cared about other people unrelated to their personal lives.
It's why cops never cared about all the middle school and high school gang fights happening in broad daylight. Stopping all of them required actual effort and results in a lot of paperwork. Cops only got involved when someone is shot - since gun laws are extremely strict in South Korea and no normal civilian should have them - stabbed, hit by a vehicle, shoved off a roof, etc. Incidents that can be fatal.
It's why teachers and hospital staffs don't care to report to Child Protective services when there are obvious signs of abuse. Multiple bruises and cuts frequently on a child. Signs of severe malnourishment. There are a few good teachers and medical staff that do care, but those are in the minority. Most people don't bat an eye.
"It's not my problem" was what always went through their heads.
No one from Keum Seongje's family shows up. He knows the nurses informed his family - Hakho overheard the phone call. Hours passed and no one showed up. Either they are very far away, or they didn't care. Seongje is just a lone wolf.
Ji Hakho is the only one there for Keum Seongje.
