I Die Because of You

Summary:

Even as they cuddled, the vision of Enid’s death refuses to leave Wednesday’s mind.

Enid told her she could talk to her about anything, but now, when Wednesday needed to talk to her the most, she couldn’t confess the truth.

Work Text:

She could practically feel Enid’s hands on her throat again, a tight grip of anger suffocating her as her own eyes were wide from shock while Enid screamed in her face. The vision was a two days ago, but with how it replayed in her head constantly since then, like she was still in it, it might’ve well have been minutes ago.

”I die because of you!” Enid had screamed at her.

Wednesday knew what it meant, there wasn’t a riddle or any mystery to solve, it was exactly what it sounded like. What bothered Wednesday was the fact that it would definitely be her fault— the whole summer she’d worked with her visions and started to understand them more, and now with a vision, clear enough to feel her throat closing and hear the same her girlfriend screaming at her in vivid detail, it was real.

It really was her fault, and she didn’t know how or why or anything at all. She didn’t understand and she hated that she didn’t understand. Enid had told Wednesday she could talk to her about anything, and while this was the worst thing she’d dealt with in her life, she couldn’t tell her.

Ever since that night all she could think about was Enid, staying by her side even to places where she wouldn’t normally go to but be invited to anyway, like shopping, lunch, or hanging out with Enid’s friends. It was torturous, but staying with her was better than knowing Enid might not be safe without her.

Now she’d been doing whatever Enid wanted, and the blonde could definitely notice, and she was happy about it. She even found herself in her girlfriend’s obnoxiously colorful bed with stuffed animals taking up half the space, and she didn’t make a single complaint as Enid practically laid on top of her.

Wednesday took a deep breath in, nose in Enid’s hair as she held onto the blonde. Her other hand held her head and ran her fingers through her hair, holding onto her tightly as if she’d disappear right then. She tried not to blink, ridiculously fearful that if she closed them for too long Enid would vanish in the millisecond she couldn’t see.

Suddenly, Enid nuzzled into Wednesday’s chest, moving to wrap her arm around the seer’s side to bring her closer. Her eye opened slightly, having fighting off sleep for a while, and only half-conscious.

”Your heart’s beating really fast,” she commented quietly, snapping the other girl out of her thoughts.

Wednesday was aware. She wasn’t used to having her heart beat faster, albeit still not a regular person’s average heartbeat, and it was uncomfortable. She could almost feel it against her rib cage with each thump. Since the vision, it’d been like that, and it only worsened in Enid’s presence because she could imagine every single way, every single scenario, as to how she could get injured, or die.

”I know,” Wednesday replied truthfully. What else could she say?

Enid smirked against her, and Wednesday could feel it, only squeezing the younger girl closer, as flushed against her body as it physically could be. Wednesday wanted to feel like this forever, Enid’s body across her own, their legs intertwined, playing with her hair, feeling Enid’s even breathing— it was all she ever needed.

It hurt knowing that this might be the last time she could have this, or at the very least one of the last times.

”What, are you flustered right now?” Enid teased, looking up at her with bright blue eyes and a grin. Wednesday merely looked at her in awe, nothing but love and adoration. She wanted to look at her forever, and she couldn’t begin to imagine a future where her best friend wasn’t in it.

”Yes,” Wednesday said, not mentioning the other truth. Her voice shook as she spoke, unwillingly and embarrassingly, in a way that made Enid’s brows knit together, and frown come across her face. Guilt overtook Wednesday as her eyes burned.

She wanted to... cry, like a stupid child. It’d been ages since she last felt that way, since Thing’s brush with death, and before that Nero’s real one.

But Enid was alive, in her arms and on her chest. She was okay right now; she didn’t need to be crying.

Yet she was about to.

”Hey, I’m sorry, baby, I didn’t mean to upset you,” Enid apologized instantly when she heard the uneven tone, getting up to cup the raven’s face.

It only made her want to cry more, and she was sure Enid could tell.

That only made her apologize again, and that only made Wednesday feel even more guilty.

”Wednesday—“ she continued sadly.

”It’s okay,” Wednesday quickly cut her off. Enid’s words didn’t affect her; her own thoughts did. The idea of not having Enid like this ever again, never being able to see her beautiful eyes and smile ever again, never being able to hear her gentle or teasing tones ever again, was what was making her so upset.

Her heart didn’t feel like it was beating faster, it felt like it was being crushed in the most unpleasant way.

”Wednesday—“ she tried again, softer and more gentle.

”Enid, stop,” Wednesday meekly mumbled. Enid didn’t need to feel upset just because Wednesday was. She didn’t need to feel awful for something she didn’t inherently do. “I assure you, you did not do anything.”

Before Enid could say anything else, Wednesday leaned in to kiss her carefully, slowly, in a way to show Enid that she loved her greatly, more than anyone to ever exist before, now, or ever. Wednesday tried to stop her eyes from burning anymore, or throat constricting as her heart raced, but it was impossible.

The best option was to not say anything, because if she did, she’d ruin their night by crying, and she didn’t know how many nights they had left together.

When she pulled back, Enid kissed her again as Wednesday melted into it. It was a few seconds but Wednesday, childishly, wished something as good as that could last forever.

”Can I cuddle you now?” Enid whispered.

Wednesday nodded, and a moment later Enid had moved so she could hold her girlfriend’s small frame, giving a comforting squeeze as Wednesday tugged her closer by her sweater, and Enid gave in, rubbing her hand up and down her back soothingly.

Thankfully Enid wasn’t able to see her face, because Wednesday’s lip trembled before laying her head on her chest to listen to her heartbeat. She needed to listen to it while it still could.

All she knew was that she had to save Enid, or die trying.

I’ve been writing a lot, but I think that’s all my happiness and creativity leaving right before I have to go back to sch**l again.

So if you enjoy my works, and like how often I’ve been posting, I apologize in advance because it’ll definitely stop soon.
