Arcana Interface

Summary:

Before Hogwarts, before the letters, before the cupboard under the stairs became a graveyard for forgotten toys and broken dreams—Harry Potter activated something impossible.

At age five, a mysterious interface awakens inside him. It explains what he cannot read. It guides what he doesn’t understand. And slowly, carefully, it helps him survive.

The Arcana Interface doesn’t just show stats—it gives Harry quests, rewards, and something he’s never had before: choice.

Notes:

This chapter is the expanded and final version of Chapter One for my AU/LitRPG-style Harry Potter fic, Arcana Interface. This story follows a young Harry Potter as he grows emotionally, magically, and personally through a living interface system that activates early.

Expect canon divergence, warm systems, emotional trauma recovery, and stat-based soft worldbuilding. Heavy focus on character development, survival mechanics, and growing magic.

CW for canon-typical neglect and implied abuse. But also: healing, hope, and soft magic in dark places.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: The Boy in the Cupboard

Chapter Text

Chapter One: The Boy in the Cupboard (Expanded Extended Version)

The cupboard under the stairs was too small for dreams.

It smelled like damp wood and worn plastic, of mildew from the leaky pipe overhead and dust that clung stubbornly to everything—no matter how much Aunt Petunia scrubbed. The faint scent of old cleaning supplies mixed with the mustiness of forgotten corners.

Harry curled himself tighter into the corner of the cot, knees hugged close beneath the thin, threadbare blanket. The bruises on his arms, already fading into pale yellow smudges, ached faintly when he breathed too deep. His small fingers traced the patterns worn into the wooden floorboards, rough beneath his skin.

The house around him breathed quietly. The refrigerator hummed steadily in the kitchen. Somewhere upstairs, Dudley’s loud, angry voice echoed through the walls. Harry squeezed his eyes shut. Not me, he thought. Not invited.

“Uncle Vernon will yell if he sees you,” Aunt Petunia’s voice had warned earlier—harsh and sharp as a snapped twig. Harry didn’t even know why he was there most days. Sometimes he wondered if he was just an invisible stain on their lives, something to be hidden away until no one noticed anymore.

But in the cupboard, it was quiet.

Too quiet.

And then—

DING!

A soft, bell-like chime echoed in the tiny space. Harry startled, jerking upright and bumping his head on the low ceiling. His wide green eyes caught the sudden shimmer of light—a gentle glow that pulsed in the air before him like a tiny flame that refused to go out.

Words floated inside the glow, shimmering golden and warm:

Welcome to the Arcana Interface.

System Initialization: [COMPLETE]

Name: Harry James Potter

Age: 5

Magical Compatibility: Unknown

Vitality: Low

Inventory: Empty

Harry’s mouth parted. “Wh-what’s an ‘interface’?”

The golden letters paused and then, a soft, calm voice filled the cupboard. Not like Uncle Vernon’s booming shout, or Aunt Petunia’s sharpness—this voice was gentle, almost like a whisper meant just for him.

“An interface is something that helps you understand and interact with the world around you,” it said kindly. “Like a talking helper, or a friend who can explain things.”

Harry’s forehead wrinkled. “Like… like a friend?”

“Yes,” the voice hummed softly. “If you want me to be.”

His throat tightened, a warm feeling coiling inside his chest. “Can you… talk to me? Like, say the words out loud? I can’t read all the words yet.”

“I can do that. For now, I will speak aloud everything I show you,” the voice promised. “When you learn to read better, you can tell me to be quiet, if you want.”

Harry nodded, blinking up at the glowing letters.

Vitality: LOW.

“Vitality means how strong and healthy your body is,” the voice explained aloud. “Right now, yours is very low. That means you don’t have enough food or rest, and your body is tired.”

Harry rubbed his tummy. “My tummy hurts sometimes.”

“That’s why. To make it better, you’ll need nutritious food, clean water, safe rest, sunshine, and some movement.”

The light shifted, showing new words:

Side Quests Available:

– Help around the neighborhood (Reward: Food, 2–3 copper coins)

– Clean something difficult (Reward: Water Bottle, Reputation +1)

– Read a book (Reward: +1 Intelligence, +1 Joy)

Harry’s lips moved slowly, “What’s… a ‘quest’?”

“A quest is a task or job you do to help others or yourself,” the voice said simply. “Completing quests earns you rewards that help you grow stronger.”

Harry’s small face scrunched. “I can’t go outside. Aunt Petunia won’t let me.”

“Then we’ll be careful,” the voice promised. “We’ll find quiet ways to help without being seen.”

A spark of hope fluttered inside Harry’s chest. “Okay.”

“Would you like to accept your first quest?” the voice asked gently.

Harry nodded before he could think too much.

Quest Accepted:

Help Mrs. Figg sweep her porch.

Reward: 1 slice of bread, 1 boiled egg, 1 copper coin.

Location: Two doors down.

Notes: Avoid being seen by your aunt and uncle.

Harry’s grin was shy and small. “Can you talk to me all the time?”

“For now, yes. When you’re older, I’ll ask again if you want me to be quiet.”

The glow faded, leaving only the soft shimmer of magic in the cupboard. It felt a little less dark. A little less cold.

The next morning, before the house woke, Harry crept from his cupboard. His bare feet barely made a sound on the creaky floorboards. The Arcana Interface whispered quietly in his ear.

“Hold your breath. Step over the third stair. Good.”

Outside, the neighborhood smelled like earth and morning dew. The sun was just beginning to warm the rooftops.

Mrs. Figg’s porch was dusty and forgotten, the broom leaning crooked against the wall. Harry tiptoed forward and began to sweep, the dust tickling his nose until he sneezed.

His arms ached from the effort, but a cheerful ding echoed in his mind.

Quest Complete.

+1 Bread

+1 Boiled Egg

+1 Copper Coin

Vitality: Slightly Improved.

He clutched the food close, sneaking bites beneath the neighbor’s hedgerow. The bread was soft, the egg warm. It had been so long since he’d tasted food like this.

The copper coin was cold and heavy in his palm. It felt like magic.

Back inside, the house was stirring. Harry hurried back to the cupboard, careful to avoid the sharp eyes of Aunt Petunia.

“Where’ve you been, boy?” she snapped, catching him at the door.

Harry blinked up, words caught in his throat.

“Answer me,” she said, narrowing her eyes. “I don’t want you running off.”

“Yes, Aunt Petunia,” he whispered.

She turned away, muttering about making sure he’s in line.

Harry’s heart hammered as he slipped back into his tiny room.

The Arcana Interface pulsed softly.

Warning: Exposure to Guardians (Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon) Increases Stealth Difficulty.

“Stealth difficulty?” Harry echoed.

“Stealth means being quiet and unnoticed,” the voice explained. “You’ll need to be careful around them to avoid punishment.”

Harry clenched his fists. “I don’t want to get in trouble.”

“You’re learning. That’s the important part.”

That afternoon, Harry tried a new quest:

Quest Available:

Deliver a letter to Mr. Baker down the street.

Reward: +1 Charisma, 2 copper coins.

“Charisma?” Harry asked aloud.

“That means how good you are at talking to others and making friends,” the voice explained.

Harry tiptoed to the doorstep of the next house, clutching the letter tightly. Mr. Baker, a kindly man with a soft smile, took the letter and chuckled.

“Well done, Harry. You’re a good boy,” he said warmly.

Harry’s heart swelled. The interface glowed quietly.

+1 Charisma

+2 Copper Coins.

Later, in the quiet cupboard, Harry’s mind wandered.

“What’s… alignment?” he whispered.

“Alignment is a way to understand the choices you make,” the voice answered. “Light means kindness and helping. Shadow means anger or harm. Everyone has both inside. Your choices tip the balance.”

Harry frowned. “I want to be good. But sometimes I’m scared.”

“That’s normal,” the voice said gently. “Being good isn’t about never being scared. It’s about what you choose when fear is there.”

Harry blinked back tears and snuggled into the blanket.

The interface glimmered softly.

New Trait Unlocked: Courage (Level 1)

A few days later, Harry stood by the kitchen window, watching Dudley stomp through the garden.

“Uncle Vernon says I’m nothing but a burden,” Harry muttered.

“That’s not true,” the voice answered firmly. “Your worth is not measured by their words.”

Harry swallowed the lump in his throat.

“Do I have magic?” he asked.

“Magic lives in many forms,” the voice said. “Your power is connected to the blood of the Peverell family—ancient and strong. It will grow as you learn to believe in yourself.”

Harry’s eyes widened.

“Can I use magic now?”

“Small magic, yes. Simple things. But magic is stronger when guided by knowledge and heart.”

Days passed and Harry practiced little spells the interface taught him.

One night, he focused his will on a nearby candle flame, trying to keep it steady.

Spell Cast: Lumos (Level 1)

Success: Partial

The flame flickered but didn’t go out.

“Good,” the voice said softly. “With practice, you will grow stronger.”

Harry smiled, a tiny spark of pride warming him.

That night, as he drifted to sleep, the Arcana Interface whispered one last thing.

The path ahead is long, Harry. But you are not alone.

And for the first time, the dark didn’t feel endless.

That night, Harry dreamed of glowing letters dancing like fireflies in the cupboard. They didn’t hurt, or yell, or tell him to stay still and out of the way. They welcomed him. Told him he mattered.

He awoke with sunlight bleeding through the slats in the door. A rare thing.

“Good morning, Harry,” the Interface said softly, its voice quiet but warm—like someone smiling just for him. “Would you like to hear today’s quests?”

He blinked the sleep away, sat up carefully, and nodded.

The light unfurled again—calm, golden, full of possibility.

“Emotional status?” Harry repeated, puzzled.

The Interface explained patiently: “That means how you’re feeling, inside your heart and thoughts. Right now, you’re a little nervous but also excited.”

“Oh.” He looked down. “People don’t usually ask how I feel.”

There was a beat of silence, and then, gently: “I will.”

That… meant something. More than he could put into words.

“Do you want to choose a quest?”

He nodded quickly, wrapping his arms around his knees. “Yes, please.”

A chime.

1. Organize Pantry Without Being Caught

Harry chose the second. “Can I learn a word now?”

The Interface’s light pulsed, pleased. “Today’s word: ‘Hopeful.’”

“What’s… hope-full?”

“Hopeful means believing something good might happen—even if you’re not sure yet.”

Harry mulled it over, lips moving silently. “Hopeful,” he said again. “I feel that sometimes. When it’s quiet.”

Quest Complete!

+1 Intelligence

+1 Joy

Word Used in Sentence (Success!)

A warm rush fluttered in his chest—like pride, or something close to it.

The day passed in slow, careful pieces.

Aunt Petunia—he still called her that, even if she never called him by name—had him scrub the back porch until his knuckles ached. He didn’t cry. The Interface whispered encouragement in between instructions on how to move faster and spill less water.

“Good job, Harry. That was efficient.”

“Fiss-shint?” he whispered.

“It means you used your time and energy wisely.”

“Is that… good?”

“Very good.”

Uncle Vernon grumbled something about “no supper for layabouts” when he got home. Harry ducked his head and bit the inside of his cheek—but he had already eaten a crust of bread from his earlier quest reward, hidden in his cupboard. It wasn’t much, but it felt like a secret victory.

Later that evening, just before dusk, the Interface chimed again.

Mini-Quest Available:

Watch the Sky for Five Minutes

Reward: Unlock: Magic Sensory Thread (Lv. 0.1)

Harry tiptoed outside and climbed onto the back step, looking up at the shifting clouds.

Something stirred deep in his chest. A prickling hum, like when his skin knew a storm was coming before anyone said the word. Only—it wasn’t weather. It was inside him.

“I feel weird,” he whispered.

“You are beginning to notice ambient magic,” the Interface said softly. “It’s like a sixth sense—something magical people have.”

“Like… my scar tingling when something bad happens?”

The Interface paused. “Yes. Though your scar is special.”

Harry frowned. “Why?”

“I cannot tell you yet. Some knowledge must be earned. Grown into.”

He sighed. “Adults always say that too.”

“Then I’ll say it more kindly.”

He smiled faintly. “That’s better.”

Quest Complete!

• Magic Sensory Thread (Lv. 0.1)

• Trait Noted: Curiosity

• Emotional Growth: Insight +0.2

Later that week

It was raining when Harry completed his first Stealth Quest.

Uncle Vernon was shouting at the telly, and Dudley was sulking after losing a video game. The perfect moment. Harry slipped out through the laundry room door and padded barefoot down the path toward the next door neighbor’s shed.

The Interface guided his steps.

“Now pause. Listen to the sound of the rain—it can cover your footsteps. Step on the brick, not the gravel. Good.”

Inside the shed, he found a cracked bucket. He cleaned it and set it upright, then helped move some old, damp newspapers to a drier shelf.

Side Quest Complete:

– Reward: 1 Cup Clean Water, +1 Stealth XP

– Vitality: Boosted

– Hidden Trait Unlocked: Resourceful (Lv. 0.1)

Back in the cupboard, sipping water slowly from a chipped cup he’d washed himself, Harry whispered, “Am I getting… better?”

“You are growing. Stronger. Smarter. Kinder.”

He smiled sleepily. “Thank you.”

“Would you like to unlock a new tab?”

“A what?”

“A part of me that helps track your progress.”

“Yes, please.”

NEW TAB UNLOCKED: Stats Overview

Strength: 1.2

Intelligence: 2.5

Magic: 0.3

Charisma: 1.0

Stealth: 1.8

Vitality: 1.9

Harry squinted. “That’s… numbers.”

“Would you like me to explain them when they change?”

“Yeah. I think that’d help.”

“You’ll be reading them on your own one day.”

“Maybe. If Aunt Petunia lets me go to school…”

There was silence again. Then—

“I believe you will. Until then—I’ll teach you what I can.”

Later Still: The Dream

That night, Harry dreamed of three shadows watching him through the rain. One tall. One cloaked in feathers. One with a crooked wand and laughing eyes.

When he woke, the Interface hummed.

“New subroutine detected: Peverell Resonance.”

He didn’t know what that meant.

But the word sounded like the old kind of magic—the kind in fairy tales and stars.

He curled tighter into his blanket and whispered into the dark, “Can I keep being good?”

“You already are.”
