Work Text:

The only sounds are the crunch of grass beneath their feet and a chorus of frogs, as Jonathan leads him by the hand through the night. Away from the city, the only light comes from the cathedral of stars above them, and Speedwagon's eyes haven't quite adjusted yet. So it's only by the damp smell in the air that Speedwagon realizes they've reached the pond. He hears a distinct "Koooh" from Jonathan, the sound of the Hamon breathing he's been studying all this time. That's the only warning though, as his eyes adjust in time to see the water's edge and catch on to the fact that Jonathan has kept going. Speedwagon skids to a stop, his grip on Jojo's hand threatening to topple him. While he stands on the bank, the toes of his boots dampening, Jojo stands illuminated before him like a magical being, floating on the surface of the water.

"Oh, my apologies, Speedwagon!" Jojo says, moving closer, taking his other hand and helping him get his balance again. "I thought it might work if you were holding my hand, but well... I see not."

"Mr. Joestar, just what are you tryin' to do?" Speedwagon asks, his heart still pounding from the thought of the wet tumble he almost took.

"I've got something to show you," Jojo says, his star-lit face excited. He moves closer. "Perhaps it might work if you stand on my feet. Will you trust me?"

"Always," Speedwagon says, without even thinking. Always, and forever. And so, though he's cautious, he lets Jojo hold his hands for balance as he steps onto the other man's boots. Jojo wobbles, just slightly, before he gets control of the water's surface again.

And then they're skating over the pond.

Speedwagon wobbles, at first, but then Jojo gets a firm grip around his waist, guiding one of Speedwagon's hands to rest on his shoulder. And then it's like they're dancing, smooth and graceful.

Slowly, they slide to a stop in the centre of the pond. The ripples of their movement slowly subside, until the glass surface of the water reflects the galaxies above as perfectly as a mirror. They are surrounded by the stars.

"Well," Jojo says softly, "what do you think?"

Speedwagon stares up at him, his blue eyes reflecting the stars just as truly as the waters below. What he thinks, what he cannot say just yet, is I love you.

What he says is, "It's beautiful."

Jojo makes it clear that he agrees.

Notes:

I always pictured these two pieces going together as one, so I was glad I was able to draw the illustration in time. Jojo is a romantic and he likes to try out new things, so of course he would think about using his powers to woo the guy he likes... ;)
