Chapter 1: Soundless Melody
"Antonio."
The Austrian's voice echoed in the Spaniard’s head like a distant hum. How long had it been since he had properly heard that voice? Years? Decades? Centuries?
"Do you believe in miracles?"
How could he ever doubt the existence of miracles? From the Spaniard’s point of view, that question was more than obvious, and he made sure the brown-haired, violet-eyed Austrian knew it. He drew a soft smile and turned his head to glance at the profile of the boy lying beside him, whose gaze remained completely lost on the beige-painted ceiling.
The Spaniard allowed himself a moment to study his profile, following the invisible line that traveled from his forehead down to his chin, and further down his neck. The first buttons of his white shirt were undone, partially revealing his collarbones. His glasses—metallic and square—rested on the nightstand.
Antonio adjusted his position, resting his head on his hand, elbow propped up on the bed, lying on his side. This drew the curious gaze of the boy with violet eyes. At that moment, the Spaniard smiled with satisfaction, catching sight of the tiny mole adorning the right side of his face, just below the corner of his lips, on his chin.
"Well?" inquired the boy, who, ever since Antonio had shifted, had been silently studying his face.
"Do you expect me to have an answer for everything, Roderich?" Antonio placed his right hand on the other boy’s abdomen, in an attempt to pull him closer.
"No." The Austrian furrowed his brow slightly but returned to an expression of complete neutrality within seconds. "But you’re smiling, and that means you know something."
"I know many things."
"Antonio." Roderich turned fully to look the Spaniard directly in the eyes.
"Do I believe in miracles?" The mischievous, boyish grin returned to the lips of the green-eyed man.
The boy beside him nodded, prompting Antonio’s hand, which had been in an awkward position, to slide from the Austrian’s abdomen to his waist, wrapping it gently.
"Tell me, Roddy"—the dark brown-haired boy’s eyes locked again with the sparkling gaze of the tanned one—"if miracles don’t exist, then why do you exist? And why are you here with me?"
