Work Text:
It was twelve o'clock in the morning when it happened.
Uzi was in her chambers staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep. Her room was cold and dark.
Uzi felt miserable. According to her family and father, it was right to feel that way, since "It was the only thing a sinful witch like her could allow herself to feel." But she didn't ask to be born that way; she never asked to be condemned to a life of sin, misery, loneliness... not to mention the constant danger of being burned to death in front of the town, just like her mother had been when she was discovered to be a witch.
And just before she tried to force herself to sleep by casting a spell, it happened.
Like a shooting star, a presence suddenly appeared at her window. It was bright, warm, and emanating an indescribable aura, which contrasted directly with the cold, dark, and gloomy atmosphere of her room.
Uzi initially thought the curtains on her window were on fire, and she panicked, thinking the townspeople had discovered she was a witch and were planning to burn her alive in her sleep. But when she looked up, it wasn't angry people with pitchforks and torches or fire she found. Instead, what she saw left her... speechless.
He looked like a young man her age, tall, with wavy creamy-blond hair that resembled fine, soft silver threads, light brown skin that seemed to have been embraced by the sun, golden eyes that could be mistaken for stars and that looked at her with a strange affection, like an artist looks at his muse, like a naturalist looks at his garden, like an astrologer looks at the stars... And let's not forget to mention his large, soft wings, as white as snow being illuminated by the sun in the morning. Uzi couldn't lie, he was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen in her entire life.
Uzi, still mesmerized by the entity in front of her, sat on the edge of her bed. Was what she was seeing real? Was she dreaming? No, her mind would never be able to imagine something so beautiful. A hallucination from lack of sleep? A mirage, perhaps? A thousand and one explanations came to mind, and every single one of them was dismissed. There was no doubt, he was real, and he was standing in front of her, smiling at her...
She was so lost in the ridiculously handsome being in front of her that she was a little startled when he finally spoke.
”Greetings, Ms Uzi!” His tone was gentle and positive "My name is Naos, and from tonight on, I will be your guardian angel." He said leaning down to be closer to her face, taking her hand delicately, as if she were made of porcelain.
And he didn't lie. From then on, Naos' visits became routine, the angel constantly came down to talk to Uzi. And as the days went by, their relationship went from just being "an angel and the person she was assigned to protect" to one of legitimate friends. Naos started calling his friend "Uzi" and not "Ms. Uzi." At the same time, Uzi stopped calling her angel "Naos" and gave him the nickname "N." Weird nickname. But Naos loved it anyways. They would have long conversations that lasted for hours, and walks through the town that lasted until dusk, the angel disguised himself as a human for these situations. N told Uzi that every angel is a star in the sky, which explains his name, and Uzi told him about his favorite authors from his library. N loved going out to the valley of flowers and taking Uzi on flights with him, when it rained he would cover her with one of his wings, and when they arrived at Uzi's house she would make him hot chocolate. It's not like he needed it, since by his divine nature he can regulate his body temperature at will on Earth, but he did love the chocolate Uzi made.
And even though Uzi didn't understand how a person like her could have earned the appreciation of such a beautiful, kind, optimistic being in the first place, She couldn't deny that N had literally become the most important thing in her life, her days went from being monotonous and depressing to fun and enjoyable, things as simple as going for a walk in the village were unthinkable to do before, but N made her feel so safe, so cared for, so... loved.
Then their feeling of friendship evolved into something more... a more intimate and deeper love than just that of 'buddies', It felt so wrong, yet so right at the same time... I mean, she couldn't be the only one who thought it was crazy, right? Someone falling in love with their guardian angel? Being a witch? That would be... I mean... Nah... right?
Uzi was in denial for a long time, until she finally decided to confess her love to her best friend. She practiced for hours in the mirror and searched the entire kingdom for the perfect flower, and she made up her mind. She headed to the valley where so many conversations, so many flights, and beautiful moments had taken place, and on a peak, she waited with a rose in one hand and a poem in the other, waiting for her beloved angel…
She waited for hours, and hours, and hours… but he never came. Uzi waited ‘till dusk, but in place of her best friend, a cold, dirty, cruel rain arrived the valley.
With N's disappearance, Uzi's life was quickly drained of joy and love, like the cold and silence after a long, hot bath. As if a large part of her heart had been ripped out overnight, leaving a cruel emptiness in its place. Why did he leave? Why did he abandon her? Why did he leave without saying goodbye?
And one day, Uzi found a scroll on her bed that seemed to be made of gold, shining with an intensity that reminded the eyes of her angel. She immediately went to grab it, and instantly recognized this majestic calligraphy...
For my dearest friend.
My sincere apologies, Uzi. It wasn't my intention to leave you like that, I didn't want to either, but heaven left me no choice.
They discovered our close friendship, which I cherish so much. I broke so many codes and rules just to see you, talk to you, come down more times than I was allowed, get so close to you, so close...
I will be judged for my offenses against heaven's sacred rules, so I write this letter, not knowing what lies ahead. But if I don't survive, I want to tell you something very important...
Before we met, scary stuff was actually... pretty scary. Before I went down for the first time, I was warned that you were dangerous, that you were a sinner and a witch that I had to "fix" I went down with some fear, but when I got to your room, it wasn't some kind of monster that was in there... I saw the most beautiful and lovely human I had ever seen, you looked like a perfect porcelain doll, and your soul, oh your soul... when I examined it, I found no evil in your heart, and how you treated me... you made me feel like a person. You made me feel like I was alive, that I mattered, it was unreal how perfect you were, almost surreal... and slowly I realized that you weren't just a friend that I loved very much and wanted to protect, because it wasn't a merely platonic love.
The way my chest felt warm and fuzzy when you were around, the way all your words sounded like beautiful melodies... I was a fool, a fool, and an idiot. By the time I realized what my true feelings were for you, it was too late.
So I'm telling you in this letter... I love you. I love you more than anything in the world.
I love you.
-Naos
Uzi didn’t even realized when she started crying. She spent the rest of her night re-reading her dear angel’s letter.
Over… and over… and over… and over again.
