I Want You to See (2023)

Summary:

Summer 2023, Barbieland

Stereotypical Barbie, Gloria, and the outcast Barbies take back Barbieland.

Work Text:

The air in Barbieland hums with an unsettling quiet, a stark contrast to its usual effervescent joy. Two days. That’s all they have before Beach Ken’s grand, misguided plan to rewrite the Barbieland constitution becomes a horrifying reality. In Weird Barbie’s slightly askew dreamhouse, a diverse group gathers, their faces etched with a mix of determination and apprehension. Stereotypical Barbie, her once-perfect hair a little disheveled from the emotional rollercoaster, stands beside Gloria, whose human ingenuity feels like a beacon. Allan shifts nervously, while Midge and the other outcast Barbies nod, ready for action.

Weird Barbie, perched on a wobbly chair, surveys them with her signature knowing smirk. "Alright, dolls," she begins, her voice a low, gravelly whisper, "Operation: Un-Kenfuse is a go."

Her plan is audacious, a multi-layered ballet of psychological warfare. First, they must progressively un-brainwash the Barbies, not with a sudden shock, but with gentle nudges, like untangling a stubbornly knotted necklace. They start small, targeting Barbies who show even a flicker of their former selves. Stereotypical Barbie approaches President Barbie, now diligently polishing Ken’s tiny surfboards.

"President Barbie," she says, her voice sweet, "remember when you used to decide the surf report?"

President Barbie pauses, a faint furrow in her brow, before Ken’s booming voice from the next room snaps her back.

"Almost got her," Stereotypical Barbie whispers to Gloria, who quickly adds, "You know, your leadership skills are really wasted on board-shining."

The Barbies learn to feign their brainwashed state whenever a Ken approaches, their eyes glazing over, their movements becoming subservient. The Kens, puffed up with their newfound, unearned authority, see only compliant dolls, their guard dropping with each successful charade.

As the un-brainwashing slowly takes hold, a new, more insidious phase begins: sowing discord among the Kens. The Barbies, now regaining their sharp intellects, become master manipulators. They whisper seemingly innocent compliments to one Ken about his "superior beach-off skills," just loud enough for another Ken to overhear.

"Oh, Ken," a Barbie sighs to a Ken flexing his bicep, "your bicep is so much more defined than that Ken’s."

They orchestrate "accidental" mix-ups of their Kens’ prized possessions, leading to petty squabbles over who owns the "best" mini-fridge or the "most authentic" cowboy hat. Beach Ken, too absorbed in his impending victory, dismisses the growing tension as mere "friendly competition," completely blind to the green-eyed monster festering in his fellow Kens’ plastic hearts. The Kens, fueled by their fragile egos and the Barbies’ carefully placed barbs, begin to eye each other with suspicion, their bromance curdling into bitter rivalry.

Election Day dawns, bright and deceptively calm. The Kens, resplendent in their most elaborate patriarchal outfits, strut towards the polling place, ready to cast their votes and solidify their dominion. But the Barbies’ meticulous work culminates in this moment. Just as Beach Ken prepares to deliver a triumphant speech, a casual remark from another Ken about his "inferior" guitar solo from last night ignites the powder keg.

"Inferior?" Beach Ken roars, his voice cracking. "I am the original Ken!"

Suddenly, Barbieland erupts into a chaotic, utterly ridiculous brawl. Kens challenge each other to impromptu surf-offs on dry land, engage in synchronized dance-offs that devolve into shoving matches, and even resort to dramatic, slow-motion hair-tousling contests. They are so consumed by their petty jealousies and performative masculinity that they are utterly oblivious to anything else.

In the midst of the escalating, absurd chaos, Stereotypical Barbie, Gloria, and the fully un-brainwashed Barbies move with silent purpose. They slip past the flailing, grunting Kens, who are too busy trying to out-flex or out-sing each other to notice. The polling place, once a symbol of their impending subjugation, now represents their liberation.

One by one, they step inside, their hands steady as they mark their ballots. They vote decisively, unequivocally, against changing the constitution. As they emerge, leaving the Kens still embroiled in their self-important squabble, a quiet, knowing smile spreads across their faces. Barbieland is safe, for now, its true spirit preserved by the very Barbies the Kens thought they had conquered.
