The Mistbound Library

Summary:

In the quiet mist of Cloud Recesses, Year 19, Lan Wangji returns as Hanguang-jun—hero of the Sunshot Campaign, bearer of silence and scars. But when he seeks a score to calm Wei Wuxian’s demonic energy, he steps instead into a library that should not exist: the Mistbound Library, a place untouched by time, shaped by grief, restraint, and unspoken longing.

There, a mysterious Keeper guides him to a book that only opens for the soul who truly needs it. Within its pages lie verses that echo with thirteen years of quiet devotion—Lan Wangji’s own heart laid bare without ever speaking aloud.

When he returns, the library is gone—but the journal remains. And years later, on a moonlit night at Mo Manor, silence finally breaks.

Step into a story of memory and mystery, of love buried beneath duty, and a hidden library that only appears to those who carry unsaid truths. The shelves await their next visitor.
Will you follow the mist?

Work Text:

Gusu, Year 19

The Library Pavilion—the pride of the Lan Sect—has just been rebuilt, its white walls gleaming against the mist of Cloud Recesses. Lan Wangji, second young master and now known across the cultivation world as Hanguang‑jun, has returned after earning his title in the Sunshot Campaign for his unassuming heroism and aid to all without seeking reward

The Sunshot Campaign is in its last year, sparked in part by Wei Wuxian’s rise as the demonic cultivator. With renewed strength, Lan Wangji quietly believes this war will end in victory
Lan hadn’t stepped foot in Cloud Recesses for nearly a day. He returned now to seek a musical score said to dissipate demonic energy in Wei Wuxian. As he walked the tranquil paths toward the Library Pavilion, he sensed a stillness not of natural quiet—but something deeper.

What he found, however, was not the familiar pavilion. Something larger than the Lan Sect’s library rose before him—
Mistbound Library, its name etched above the entrance, whispered in mist and carved stone. He must have activated an array that pulled him into this place—but when he turned back, the path was gone.
With no return, he had only one choice: to step inside.

Lan Wangji stepped through the threshold. Inside, a woman of his age sat calmly sipping tea, gazing at him as though she had known he would come.
“You are here,” she said. Then she rose and moved through the shelves, indicating he should follow.

“Who are you?” Lan asked, bowing his head out of politeness but tension tightening his voice. He followed slowly.

“I am the one you summoned,” she replied, bowing slightly. “Cloud Recesses bears grief and restraint—qualities you yourself uphold. Thus this library aligns with your spirit.”
Lan made no reply—but she seemed to know his thoughts already.

“We do not give you answers,” she added, voice soft yet firm, “only guidance: where grief is strongest, where devotion is silent. Here we appear.”

He looked around—a seemingly endless expanse of shelves stretching beyond sight. He restrained his fingers as he reached for a scroll; it remained sealed, unreadable.

She noticed, and softly spoke: “Only the book you truly need will open. It will find you. Time does not move within the library.” And then she melted away into the shadows of the shelves.

Lan Wangji eventually stood before a shelf labeled “Restraint”, its calligraphy faint yet deliberate against the wood grain. His fingers hovered before touching a single book: Hidden Radiance. The weight of its presence caused the air to shift—the stillness around him deepened as though waiting for a release.

This is the book meant for me, he thought, even if I did not know its name.
With resolute calm, he opened it. The pages unfolded like echoes unspoken, and the first few lines drew a breath through his memory:

Year One:
I watched his laughter beyond the Pavilion’s rules, named rabbits he gifted me: Waiting, Promise, Depth. In those small joys lay the distance I could not cross.
His breath caught. Memories bloomed: Wei Wuxian’s laughter spilling in the Library Pavilion, the warmth of dawn mist, the rabbits with names so meaningful yet silent to all but Lan Wangji.
Flipping deeper, another passage glowed with unvoiced devotion:

Year Seven:
I carried his flute song inside me, weaving melody into moonlit nights. Each note held unsaid longing, preserved in silent harmony.
Seven years, Lan Wangji thought, I held music in my bones—as a vow I could not speak.
He advanced slowly to the final fragment, heart steady even as something deep pulsed inside:

Year Thirteen:
I bear scars branded by loyalty—not defiance. I have earned the name HanGuang-jun during war’s long shadow. Yet brightness fades when his name remains unsaid. If words could change what was lost, I would have whispered. But for now… silence is its own promise.

Lan Wangji’s hand trembled as he traced the lines. The imagery—scar-stippled skin, earned title, internal brightness—resonated with the season of the Sunshot Campaign and his own path. Here lay his heart’s confessions, woven into verse deliberately restrained yet piercing.

The cost of silence… he considered. It has been both my strength…and my prison.

Lan Wangji closed the journal gently, reverence tempered with resolve. The pages whispered in the hush—acknowledgment instead of confession—but acknowledgment still carried weight. He tucked Hidden Radiance into his robe.

In the distance, faint echoes—the Keeper’s promise that only the needed book would open—reassured him. He stood poised in grief’s mirrored calm, carrying both burden and quiet reclamation.

Lan Wangji blinked. The pale mist dissolved, and the celestial shelves retreated—swallowed by shifting air.

In their place stood the Library Pavilion at Cloud Recesses—whitewashed walls restored, wooden beams familiar, and a single magnolia tree framing the window. The rebuilt structure looked exactly as it had before, the proud heart of the Lan Sect risen again after the Wen Clan’s destruction

But Mistbound—the expansive archive of mist and mystery—was nowhere.
I’ve returned. Yet something remains amiss.

The path that carried him to that hidden realm no longer existed. The hush of a timeless library gave way to the ordered silence of disciplined cultivation. Incense drifted between pavilions, distant chants whispered in memory—but nothing beyond.

Lan Wangji remained still, his robes unruffled. I was there. Yet no trace remained.
With deliberate calm, he stepped into the pavilion, crossing its threshold with the same quiet strength he carried into every trial.

Year 13
He paused beneath a row of scroll racks. The scrolls themselves looked untouched, but a heavy absence weighed on his mind. It was as if something had shifted. A memory—half-formed, fragile—flickered at the edge of his consciousness.

Something is missing.

Within his inner robe, a subtle bulge held a familiar weight. The journal Hidden Radiance—he had taken it, though the space for taking felt… erased. His fingers found it there, as if guided by instinct.
I remember the words… but not the taking.

He drew the journal out and flipped it open. His eyes grazed the lines he'd memorized years ago:

Year Thirteen:
I bear scars branded by loyalty—not defiance. I have earned the name HanGuang‑jun during war’s long shadow. Yet brightness fades when his name remains unsaid. If words could change what was lost, I would have whispered. But for now… silence is its own promise.

Lan felt his breath steady. Recognition—not surprise—welled within him. The memory of opening the journal, reading those confessions, felt distant. Yet the emotional echo remained clear.
I know these lines… now they remind me.

Soon, time would pass before he read the journal again, on a night before the Night Hunt at Mo Manor. In the candlelit darkness, the words felt like whispers from the past—a guide, and a question mark. But tonight, the journal rested empty in his hand, as if waiting to reveal itself again when the time was right.

Lan Wangji stepped through the carved doorway of Mo Manor’s courtyard—where shadows of past grief and hope intertwined with the cold night air. His breath caught the faint scent of flute and incense—the residue of Wei Wuxian’s presence. His heart, long locked in silence and duty, trembled with something fragile, new.

He felt the empty space beside him fill before his eyes. Wei Wuxian stood bathed in moonlight, robe hem rustling faintly, eyes soft with wonder and relief.

Time stopped.

Lan Wangji’s carefully constructed composure cracked.
He moved forward—not with measured steps—but with urgency born from thirteen years of silence.
Wei Wuxian’s gasp came before recognition—then slow clarity, landing like sunlight through mist.
Lan’s arms wrapped around him.

For the first time in thirteen years, he did not hesitate.
Lan Wangji voice muffled
“I… missed you, Wei Ying. I—”
Wei Wuxian said with trembling voice,
“Lan Zhan…”
Emotions too long repressed tumbled out—Lan Wangji’s whispering chant of longing repeated, unbidden and unstoppable:
"Wei Ying… Wei Ying, I love you… Wei Ying, I missed you…"

Wei Wuxian’s arms found their way around Lan Wangji’s chest, both startled and suddenly grounded in peace.

Lan Wangji stood in the Library Pavilion, journal tucked silently within his robe. The hush of Cloud Recesses was absolute—but a faint vibration pulsed in his memory: a resonance of shelves that were no longer there, whispers of a presence gone.
He bowed once to the statues of past masters, felt the weight of restraint and duty settle upon him. Then, without turning, he stepped into the mist beyond the pavilion.

Inside the hidden library—Arcanum—time resumed its suspended state.

Books realigned. A lantern flickered to life in the distant hall. The shelves—once infinite—rippled outward, forming a corridor of invitation.

At the end of the corridor, a single volume glowed faintly on a pedestal. Its spine read “Next Arrival” in delicate script.

A book—bright with possibility—waited silently.

The air shifted. Flame softened. Veil-like mist weaved through the stacks, unfurling ribbons of faint calligraphy.

Where loyalty and grief converge, and where devotion waits unvoiced...

A heart may step through mist to speak its buried truth.

The pedestal light pulsed gently. No Keeper stood near; no voice intruded. Yet the message felt clear: the library marks the next soul who, like Lan Wangji, carries devotion in silence—and will find solace and guidance within these shelves.

The corridor dissolved, the book vanished, but the glow lingered in the air—an echo only the chosen could feel.

The library is waiting for your visit.
