Even When It Hurts

Summary:

Some days, the pain is too loud to ignore. But Remus is there—with tea, with gentleness, and with love that never wavers.

Work Text:

The sound of rain patters against the window, a soothing counterpoint to the sharp stabs of pain that pulse through you. You're nestled beneath a thick woolen blanket, the heat trapped against your skin doing little to soothe the ache deep in your bones. It's a pain that lingers, always there, no matter what spells or potions you take. Some days, it is merely background noise. Today, it roars.

You don't cry out anymore. The tears have long since dried up, replaced by a grim acceptance. Instead, you draw in shallow breaths, each one a silent prayer for respite. You lie still, letting the waves of pain wash over you without resistance. Fighting back only seems to give it more power, fueling its relentless assault on your body.

Your hear the kettle whistle in the kitchen, the shrill sound piercing the quiet hum of the rain. Remus's footsteps are soft against the wooden floor, muted almost to a whisper. He moves with a gentleness born of years spent treading lightly, every action measured and deliberate as if he fears causing further harm to something already broken.

"Still with me?" His voice is low, barely audible over the rain's steady rhythm, as he enters the living room carrying two mugs, steam curling from their brims.

A flicker of a smile crosses your face, despite the pain. "Where else would I be?"

The clink of china against wood resonates through the room as Remus sets the mugs down on the coffee table. He sinks to his knees beside the couch, close enough that you can feel the heat radiating off him. His gaze is heavy, rooted in concern, and it lingers over every part of you—each crease in your brow and the tension coiled in your shoulders.

He notices how your hands lie limp on your stomach, making no move to grab the mug of tea waiting for you. The silence stretches between you both, a chasm filled with unspoken words and shared understanding.

"Here," he murmurs, reaching for your hand. His fingers are rough but gentle as he traces circles on your palm with his thumb. It's a small gesture, one meant to soothe and comfort, but it's laden with so much more—a silent pledge, a tether in the storm.

"Is it a bad day?"

You nod, unable to find the strength to lie or dismiss his worry. Your eyes flutter shut, the world spinning slightly even behind your closed lids. The soft press of his lips against your knuckles is unexpected, the warmth seeping into your skin like a balm. His stubble grazes your hand, a contrast to the smoothness of his mouth. It should be comforting, grounding, but instead, it feels like an anchor pulling you further under.

"I hate this," you whisper, your voice barely audible. "I hate that this is normal."

His hand cups your cheek, fingertips tracing the line of your jaw with a gentleness that belies the strength within them.

"I know," he says, his voice barely more than a whisper. "I know, love."

You close your eyes, leaning into the warmth of him. Remus smells like parchment and chamomile, like the forest after a summer rain. He always does. It's comforting, familiar—a beacon in the chaos that too often surrounds you. His arm wraps around you, holding you together when you feel as if you might shatter from the pain.

"Sorry," you mumble, your words slurred with exhaustion and the remnants of agony. "Never meant for you to be stuck with... this."

He stills, not in anger but in a profound hurt that seems to echo through the silence. His hands pause their tender ministrations, and he pulls back just enough to look at you. His eyes, usually so full of life and mischief, are now pools of quiet concern, reflecting a depth of emotion rarely seen except in moments like these—when you try to push him away.

"Sweetheart," he murmurs, his voice rough as if scraped raw by the very thought of you blaming yourself. "You're all I ever needed."

The words are simple, yet they strike you with the force of a stunning spell, leaving you breathless. How could he say that, when your body is a battlefield, when every movement sends waves of pain crashing over you?

"I don't care what your body can or can't do," he continues, brushing a stray lock of hair from your forehead with a gentleness that belies his strength. "You're not too much. You're mine. And I love you. Every version of you. On the good days, and on days like this."

Your eyes flutter closed, then open again in a blink as tears well up and spill over. Remus doesn't shy away from them. Instead, he leans in, pressing a soft kiss to your forehead, then to your cheek, the corner of your mouth. His lips brush against your skin like the faintest whisper of a promise.

"You're not broken," he murmurs, so close now that you can feel the warmth of his breath against your cheek. "You're brave. Braver than anyone I know, and I'm so proud to be yours."

Your breath hitches as you bury your face in his shoulder, letting the tears come. Not from pain this time, but from a deep relief that leaves you trembling. Relief from being seen, truly seen, and still loved. Loved not despite your scars, both visible and invisible, but because they are part of who you are.

The hours melt away as Remus stays by your side, a constant presence amidst the torment. Just when you think you can bear it no longer, he is there, reading aloud from your favourite book to distract you. His voice is a balm, soothing the raw edges of your pain with each word spoken.

"Here," he murmurs, carefully turning you onto your side when the stillness becomes too much to bear. He brushes stray hairs from your face with a tenderness that belies the strength in his hands. Each gesture is a testament of his patience, his understanding. Never once does he make you feel like a burden.

And so the day passes into night, the darkness outside mirroring the shadows cast across your heart. The pain recedes, leaving an exhaustion that seeps into your very bones. It's a welcome reprieve, one that allows your mind to wander towards the words that have lingered unspoken between you.

"I love you too."

The words are barely a whisper, a breath caught on the edge of sleep, but they carry the weight of everything you've been through—every shared secret, every stolen moment, every touch that lingers just a moment too long.

Remus' chest rises and falls beneath your cheek, the steady rhythm lulling you further into the abyss. But before you surrender completely, you feel him stir, his arm tightening around you as if to anchor you back from the edge. His breath is warm against your head, a counterpoint to the chill that has settled in your bones.

"Even when it hurts," you add, more to yourself than to him. It's an affirmation, a promise that despite the pain and fear, there is something here worth fighting for.

He doesn't respond, not with words, but the way he holds you close—as if trying to shield you from the world outside—is answer enough.
