Work Text:

Before you could even register what was happening, you found yourself lying in a field of wheat.

You sat up, trying to make sense of your surroundings.  A gentle breeze sent amber ripples across the fields, carrying with it the faint sound of children laughing and waves breaking somewhere in the distance.

It was a far cry from what you had just seen.

Your head throbbed, your thoughts swirling and twisting and tangling just beyond your grasp.  You needed to reorient yourself.  The last thing you remembered before being swept into this wild escapade was going into the Vortex of Genesis with Caelus.  There you had encountered Phainon and Lygus, the latter of whom suddenly threw the two of you into Phainon’s memories—or perhaps his very past.  The memories and emotions had crashed into you all at once like a tidal wave as you walked beside him,

cycle

after cycle

after cycle.

Your heart broke for him over and over and over again—far more times than you could ever hope to count.  A pit formed in your stomach as you suddenly recalled the most recent cycle you had witnessed, Hyacine’s chilling screams still ringing in your ears as goosebumps raised the hair on your skin.  Your heart sank as the sky fell.  And Phainon..  Or, rather, Khaslana… The dead, apathetic stare in his eyes as he tore her Core Flame from her lifeless body deeply disturbed you.  It was as if he wasn’t human anymore...

But where was he now?  And where was Caelus?

Somehow the three of you had gotten separated.

You rose to your feet, brushing away some stray wheat that clung to your clothes, and headed into the village, drawn towards the sound of waves.  Though you had no idea where they were, something in your gut told you they were okay.

The entire village was bathed in gold, the setting sun casting soft light across the horizon.  That’s right—this was Aedes Elysiae again.  It was small but cozy, the air itself seeming to radiate nostalgia and warmth.  A soft wind.  Falling leaves.  The tinkling of wind chimes.  Your stress seemed to fall away from you with each step.  People bustled about their day as you walked through the dirt streets, carrying sacks of flour or tending to livestock, meeting your gaze with welcoming smiles.  The smell of fresh bread from a nearby bakery drifted towards you as you walked, the sound of water gradually getting closer.

At last, you spotted Phainon and Caelus on the docks.

They hadn’t seen you yet.  Phainon stood with his back to you, shoulders slumped in a way that looked so unusual for someone who, prior to the Flame Chase, such a cheerful personality, who bore a title as grand as “Deliverer.”  His very presence seemed tired.  Haggard.  Aching.  His soul thoroughly crushed by the weight of over thirty million lifetimes.  Caelus faced him, speaking quietly, his usual mischief and playfulness replaced by something solemn.  Resolute.  Between them shimmered the faint, golden silhouette of The Hero Within—ethereal, warm, as if sunlight itself had taken a human shape.

As you stepped closer and onto the docks, you caught the tail end of their conversation.

“But this time… things are different,” said The Hero Within.  “Your persistence has shifted the tide.  On the horizon, I see it, faint but undeniable, the shape of dawn, breaking through the eternal night.”

You heard Phainon sigh.  “...Turns out, the fire that lights the way was never mine to begin with.”

The Hero Within tilted his head, seemingly aware of your presence.  A knowing, gentle smile tugged at lips made of light.  “...Or maybe, you just needed help carrying it.”  The otherworldly figure turned squarely towards you.

It was then that Caelus and Phainon both noticed you.  You exchanged glances with Caelus first, the fellow Trailblazer giving you a small nod.  There was no need for words—the uncharacteristically serious look on his face enough to tell you you both were thinking and feeling the same thing.  Finally, your gaze settled on Phainon.  A hint of his exhaustion lifted upon seeing you, eyes softening the moment they met yours.   He breathed your name like a prayer, carried by the wind and left reverently at your feet.

Whatever you had wanted to say suddenly caught in your chest, trapped by a fresh wave of grief and hundreds of tangled memories.  After a beat, you finally managed, “I’m here, Phainon.  We’re here for you.  Whatever you need...”  Though the words didn’t feel like nearly enough, they were sincere.

Pleased at your arrival, The Hero Within nodded at you with a smile before turning back to Phainon.  “Do you remember?  In that first timeline, you and Mydeimos stood before the Scales of Justice, locked in a ‘duel,’ each of you weighing what you held dearest, ‘what weighed more than the fate of the world.’  And when hesitation took hold, the answer you sought from me…”

Your brow furrowed slightly.  After all you had witnessed, that first timeline felt like eons ago.  It was more than a little strange to see different versions of the Chrysos Heirs you knew.  Simultaneously familiar and foreign.

The Hero Within chuckled.  “..What am I saying? I am you. Even if you buried me deep and chose another path, that fact never changed.”

Phainon was quiet, turning the weight of that statement over in his mind like a smooth stone.

But The Hero Within was endlessly patient, “Then let's try again. When you stood before the scales in hesitation, the answer you found in your own heart…  Do you still remember it?”

Phainon closed his eyes, conjuring the memory in his mind. “Remember the past, and become the hero of tomorrow,” he recited, “What weighs more than the fate of the world is the resolve to shoulder an immutable past, and carry it into the future.”

“Good,” The Hero Within said with a nod of approval.  His gaze swept towards you and Caelus.  “Then, Trailblazers, my friends, my comrades…

“You both arrived in this strange world and were bound by its cruel fate up till this very moment.  In the face of danger, you never once backed down.  Instead, you've saved world after world, without hesitation.  Those boarding passes are now marks of heroes.”

Without thinking, your hand found its way to the Astral Express badge on your hip, the pads of your fingers tracing its insignia.  It was grounding, offering you a sense of home away from home.

“If I choose to step through that door and embrace an end fitting of the Destruction, let this sun forged from millions and millions of Coreflames burn me up along with the god of Destruction and THEIR minions…  Then the world we leave behind, this world, my home, where hope still lingers…”

A gentle, sea salt scented breeze caressed your face and stirred your hair, as if Aedes Elysiae itself was speaking to you.

“...Will you take on everything we've carried, return to the beginning one last time, stop the birth of Irontomb, save the world we love, and rewrite its doomed fate?”

Suddenly aware of the immense amount of pressure you were about to undertake, fear began to coil into your chest.  There would be no room for mistakes.  Should Irontomb be completed, the consequences to not only Amphoreus but to countless worlds beyond could be catastrophic.

And yet, something within you burned hotter.  Something unbreakable.

Without hesitation, both you and Caelus responded at the same time,

“We will.”

The Hero Within gave a relieved chuckle at your conviction, a hopeful and refreshing sound that cut through the heaviness.  He sighed.  “...Good.  In that case, even this fruitless wasteland may finally bloom with flowers.”  The ethereal figure took in his surroundings once more, as if to savor one last moment in his hometown.  Finally, he turned to Phainon.  “So…”

His golden form shimmered and, like light through a prism, split into two separate beings: The Courage Within and The Humanity Within.  One came face to face with Caelus while the other came face to face with you.  Phainon nodded in understanding.  “If the two of you take on the weight of the whole world, you’ll be able to walk further down the path of Deliverance than a fire that only knows how to burn...”

The figure before you grinned at you—the same charming grin Phainon had flashed at you countless times before—before holding out his hand.  As you reached out to take it, his light enveloped you.  You closed your eyes, drinking in the sensation.  His light felt warm, familiar, before it disappeared into your form, tucking and settling itself somewhere deep within your chest.

When you opened your eyes, the figures were gone, leaving you, Caelus, and Phainon alone on the docks.

The latter turned to you.  He dropped his gaze, suddenly finding it difficult to meet your eyes.  “There’s…there’s one more thing I need to ask of you.”

You looked to your fellow Trailblazer questioningly.  Not missing a beat, he tipped his chin towards Phainon. ‘Go.’

Your footsteps felt heavy on the wooden pier as you made your way over to him, a bit of worry clenching at your heart.  When you were close enough, he finally met your eyes.  For a moment, everything fell away.  No fate.  No coreflames.  No cycles.  Just the two of you.

He resisted the urge to pull you into a tight hug, because he wasn’t sure he’d ever want to let go.

Instead, Phainon reined himself in with an emotional restraint that came with lifetimes upon lifetimes of practice.  He quietly breathed your name before a callused palm came to rest against your face.  “There are over thirty million versions of me who never got to meet you…  I pity them, truly,” he said with a humorless chuckle.  His thumb gently stroked your cheek as his eyes flickered across your face, trying to commit every fine detail to memory.  He was quiet for a few moments before he finally managed a weary smile.  “I don’t want to go back to that, so…”  Pleading blue eyes searched yours, internally wrestling with himself.  Was what he was about to ask too selfish?  After all you and Caelus had done already, would it be unfair to ask for yet one more thing?  In the great calculus that would ultimately decide Amphoreus’s fate, was there any room for what he wanted?

Finally, he gathered the courage and relented, deciding to make a request on his own behalf—just this once.

“If I forget this, forget you… will you find me again?”

The question caught you off guard slightly, surprised by how he carried such a humble ask with such weight.  You didn’t even need to think about your answer.

You rested your hand atop his, looking him square in the eyes.  Your voice was sure.  Unwavering.  “I will.  You’re not alone in this anymore.  I promise.”

At that, Phainon let out a breath, tension melting away from his shoulders.  A genuine, relieved smile tugged at his lips as his eyes shone with tears.  As if to hide them, he lowered his forehead against yours.  “Then let this cycle burn,” he murmured, voice low and raw.  “If you’re on the other side, I’ll gladly walk through the fire.”

His hand slid down, catching yours and guiding it to his chest.  Beneath your palm, his heartbeat pulsed—tired, stubborn, still burning.  Still warm.

“Hold onto this for me,” Phainon whispered.

“Always,” you vowed.

The wind rustled through the trees, softly sweeping out towards the sea as if the world itself had heard your promise and carried it onwards toward the horizon.  Caelus stepped forward, a quiet determination burning in his eyes.  The three of you exchanged one last look—silent words passing between you in understanding.

Destiny awaited—Irontomb, the cyclical fate of Amphoreus, and the fragile hope of rewriting it all.  As Cyrene’s gentle light curled around you, warm and hopeful and encouraging,

you stepped forward and vanished into the Vortex of Genesis.

Notes:

Thanks for stopping by to read! 🤍💙 I think I tend to really like writing the reader straight into the canon, so I hope y'all don't mind and that my writing hopefully makes a little sense with the established lore hehe

Also this patch broke me but I loved it! I'm so invested in Amphoreus now! What did yall think of the patch? Was it anything like you were expecting before it came out?
