The war that broke the vampire and hunter world wasn't something you'd expect. The war was a long-winded battle that took many lives from both sides, many vampires and talented hunters fell in this catastrophe, but the one that caused the most damage, would be the death of Zero Kiryuu. The boyfriend of the vampire king, and close friend to the pureblood princess, Kaname and Yuuki Kuran. I know you must be wondering how this battle started, let me explain from the beginning.
It all started when Rido Kuran was killed by the illustrious and immensely powerful, Zero Kiryuu. The last living Kiryuu around. The hunter that wielded the infamous Bloody Rose with deadly efficiency, that not even a pureblood like Rido Kuran, could withstand. The fight ended at the first lights of dawn, Kaname checking on Zero after making sure Rido was dead, never to rise again in a pile of ash that blew away into the autumn morning wind. Now, most would assume Zero wouldn't want help from a vampire, let alone a Pureblood, the same type of vampire that turned him into the thing he despised more than anything. However, a secret was hidden between Zero and Kaname. that secret, was that they were dating. It started when Zero needed Kaname's blood to avoid slipping into Leve; E territory and getting killed on sight by the Hunters Association. In that cold, damp dungeon, with a hunter's sigil to keep him chained and bound like a wild animal, sat Zero Kiryuu. His bloodlust growing by the hour, his mind fading into mush with the only thought of draining blood from the first human he saw. In the corner of the room, though, stood Kaname. He watched as Zero clawed at the chains and walls, anything to break free. Kaname approached and forced Zero to drink his blood. Zero, although heavily reluctant, ended up drinking to avoid hurting Yuuki or any other Day Class student. Since then, him and Kaname started to understand and tolerate each other, much to Yuuki's surprise and joy. Eventually, during one feeding, Kaname looked Zero in the eyes and asked him something important "Zero, would you be my boyfriend?". Zero, having just finished feeding, had no idea what to say. On the one hand, he started to feel things for Kaname, but on the other hand, that would mean betraying the Hunters Association and his family's legacy that was left to him. In the end, he did end up accepting the confession, and the two began to date in secret. Yuuki, being the supportive friend she was, accepted that Kaname and her would never be anything more than friends, later to be siblings. It hurt, but she learned to let go and move forward, for her own well-being, and for those she cared deeply for.
However, peace was not meant to last. After Yuuki's awakening into a pureblood, she became the princess of the Kuran clan. She helped Kaname rule over the vampires and other purebloods with strict rules designed to keep the peace between humans and vampires. However, a pureblood by the name of Sara Shirabuki, didn't hold the same sentiment as Kaname and Yuuki. She wanted to become the next queen of the vampires, unaware that the position had been filled already. Sara hunted and enslaved many humans into becoming her servants. She wanted to prove her power through sheer numbers and to show off the power she held, hoping to catch Kaname's attention. The news swept fast through the hunters' networks about a pureblood wreaking havoc. Of course, Zero as well as Yagari Toga and Kaito Takamiya were dispatched to take care of the situation. The Kurans were also made aware of the rough pureblood turning humans into Level D's and C's, throwing the balance of the world. Hearing this, Kaname went to deal with this situation himself. When he made it to the residence of Sara Shirabuki, he already found that the hunters had her pinned down, ready for the final shot. Kanem stopped them though, because he wanted to be the one to deal with her personally. She was stripped of her title and made to work for the Kurans for eternity as nothing more than a Level C. The humans were given different jobs and places to stay, because they could no longer return to their normal lives again.
The biggest keg to this war, however, was the awakening of a pureblood by the name of Fuyuki Hakamori. He was a ruthless and sadistic pureblood that reveled in the bloodshed left in his wake. His name meant Winter Tree Grave Keeper, which was fitting due to him killing the most in Winter and burying bodies in shallow graves, like a grave keeper. He went after the Hunters and managed to kill a couple, throwing the peace treaty that was in motion, out the window. The hunters saw this as an attack to them and fought back, resulting in a war. Kaname wanted Zero to come with him and Yuuki to stay safe, but he refused. He stated that he couldn't abandon those he cared for in the Association and that he'd be ok. What a lie that turned out to be.
The war raged on for years, both sides never giving an inch. The hunters found a way to exploit the vampires by giving them dead animals that smelled heavily of blood. It distracted the lower ranked ones long enough to be killed. The higher ranked ones though, saw through this and cut down the hunters who were too slow to get away. In a particularly bloody battle between Zero and Fuyuki, who inserted himself into this war, a servant of Fuyuki was distracting Zero so her master could land a solid hit on Zero, trying to incapacitate him. When she was killed, however, that increased Fuyuki's rage by twice the strength. He tried landing a hard punch to Zero's ribs, but he avoided it. Fuyuki slammed his fist into the ground creating a dust cloud. Zero didn't see Fuyuki until he turned around and narrowly missed getting a deep gash to the neck. Fuyuki, planning an ambush, summoned another servant to land a killing blow, thrusting his clawed hand through the hunter's chest. Kaname, who was trying to keep Yuuki safe from other nobles and lower levels, saw Zero hit the ground. In a flash, Kaname was holding Bloody Rose and shot Fuyuki, point blank ranged in the stomach, turning him to dust. Kaname, seeing the blood pooling around Zero, tried to stop the bleeding. The battlefield stilled for a few moments to watch the scene of their king, holding and failing to stop the bleeding of a hunter. The air felt tense and heavy as the weight of the situation dawned on him. He was holding the dying body of his beloved Zero.
Yuuki, seeing the blood around Zero, came rushing over with her vampiric speed, saw the light starting to drain from his eyes. The already pale skin was growing paler by the second, looking more like the color of freshly fallen snow than the beautiful pale color of his natural pigmented skin. He was growing colder and weaker by the minute, and soon, he'd see his family again. He held his hand out to Kaname and Yuuki, tears falling down his face, as fear washed over him. He didn't want to die yet but he knew Lady Luck was never on his side. He wished for Yuuki and Kaname to be happy and he was sorry for the pain he brought them. The tears started free falling from Yuuki's eyes, watching the person who she cared for and grew up with, die with a gaping hold to the chest and blood drying on the ground around him. Kaname let out an ear-piercing scream that resonated throughput the entire battlefield, signaling then end of this war.
Zero was laid to rest with the rest of his family, with Kaname and Yuuki visiting as much as they could. They placed a ward onto his grave so that he may never be disturbed by those with ill intentions. Everyone felt the resonating sadness that came with losing someone like Zero Kiryuu. Years past with Kaname never wanting to find another person that wasn't his Zero. Yuuki still cried sometimes when she thought of him and his master and adopted father always made sure to place flowers onto his grave to pay their respects. The fall of the Kiryuu bloodline was one that stayed in the Hunter's Accociation records for many years, never letting anyone forget the life that was Zero Kiryuu.
