Her hair was blonde. Not beach blonde- it was more of a dirty blonde. Shiny, straight, and sleek. She hopped on her skateboard, her shoes thick and steel toed against her board. She should've worn converse today. Alas, she met up with Mark, Jesse, and Matthew.
They always met at the same dingy alleyway. Matthew would be smoking a cigarette up against the wall. Mark would stand beside him- a little closer than called for. Jesse stood farther away, staring out into the distance, probably waiting for Avril. When she finally arrived, they all cheered. She grinned. Her black eyeshadow was already pretty smeared from sweat.
“Hey,” she said, kicking up her skateboard. She wore baggy jeans, a tight shirt, and a tie. “Ready to go grab something to eat?”
Jesse replied first. “Hell yeah.” He said, his stomach grumbling comically on time.
Mark grabbed his skateboard, watching all the others tumble down beside it. His was the base of the skateboard pile.
“Dude!” Matthew huffed, wrinkling his nose. “Cmon.”
Avril laughed, punching his shoulder. “Toughen up,” she said. “Let’s go get slurpees. Who’s paying?”
“It’s like your turn to pay!” Jesse said, hopping on his skateboard. They skated in a line on the sidewalk, as a group on the streets or parking lots.
“No!” The other 3 shouted at him.
“Jesse, stop gaslighting us.” Matthew groaned. “It’s your turn to pay.”
He cross his arms and sighed. We skated in comfortable silence to the 7/11, only getting honked at once or twice by a red Honda civic and a green Toyota.
The group slid up to the parking lot of 7/11, grabbing onto their skateboards and walking in. They knew the cashiers by now- mondays, Tuesday, and Thursday had the chill employees. The rest of the time, they were rude pricks. Today was Monday, thankfully.
Avril always ditched the boys to go get a cherry slurpee. They went to the other side to get sodas. There was never anyone there, so they could take as much time as they needed to just hangout. Refills were free, in their minds.
Avril turned the corner, ready to get her slush, but was found face to face with a girl, about the same height as her, with jet orange hair. She quickly turned to look at Avril, her eyes wide, but softening.
Avril grinned. “Hey,” she said, moving over to start getting a slushee. She was worried she’d rubbed off as like.. the female version of a frat boy.
But the other girl just turned to look at her. She was very pretty. There was never anyone else cool in this boring town. Avril was fascinated.
“Are you visiting town?” Avril tried again.
The other girl fiddled with her own slushee cup, going back and forth between cola and blue raspberry. “We just moved in.” She said, her voice was nice. Strong, but quiet.
“Do you like it?” Avril asked. She wanted to be herself, but she was worried that.. well, herself would scare off the stranger.
She didn’t quite know why she felt like this. The other girl was, well, cute. But Avril had never felt like this for a girl before. It didn’t really bother her, but she was confused. She wanted to get to know her. To hangout. She wanted to know what this girl's lips would feel like.
The girl responded, her eyes brightening as Avril kept the conversation going. “It’s okay. I haven’t really met anyone.”
Avril laughed. “Yeah? You can hang around me and my friends if you want. We’re always free. I’m Avril, by the way. Avril Lavigne. I live right off of fourth street.”
“I’m Hayley. Hayley Williams. Fourth street? I live on fifth! We’re really close.” She said.
Despite her soft smile, her insides had a party. “I’m gonna pay for your slushee.” Avril finalized. It wasn’t a suggestion. It was a statement.
“What? I can’t make you do that-“ the girl argued. But Avril shushed her.
“Nonono, dear Hayley, this is an honor.”
“Yeah, a fucking honor that none of us ever get.” Mark said, pouting. “You’re so lucky. Avril never pays.”
Avril turned and glared at her friend. “Hayley, meet Mark. That’s Jesse and Matthew back there,” she said, pointing at the two.
BOOM. outside, thunder roared. “Are you serious?” Matthew groaned.
“Fuck.” Jesse said. “Let’s get going soon.”
Avril grabbed Hayley’s wrist and pulled her up to the counter, paying. The cashier seemed surprised to see Avril with someone else besides her crew, let alone paying. But Avril’s tight look shut the cashier up, who folded the cash and handed back change.
“I’ll walk you home.” Avril said to Hayley, who looked nervous.
“It’s okay, you should go with-“
“Chill out,” Avril said. “It’s my pleasure.”
Matthew groaned. “Fine, leave us. Bye. See you tomorrow."
The rest of the boys said something similar, before leaving with their sodas after paying and skating away. Avril carried her skateboard in one hand, her slurpee in the other.
It was beginning to drizzle. Avril felt her hair getting damp. It would be worse for Hayley, with her orange dyed hair. It would get everywhere.
“Let’s get you home.” Avril said, softly and worriedly.
Hayley almost melted at the way Avril said her words. “Thanks for walking me home. And, well, buying my drink.”
Avril smiled. “No worries. I got your back. Hey, we should hangout more. I’ll teach you how to skateboard.”
Hayley shook her head. “I roller skate.” She said, her eyes twinkling. “But we can skate around together.” The girl winked. She WINKED at Avril.
Avril’s eyes dashed to look at everything about Hayley. She needed something, something to make a move. And then, she saw it. Her earring. It was a circle, covering up her lobe. It seemed like just cute colors, but it was the lesbian flag. Good covering.
“Nice earrings.” Avril said.
Hayley's face turned red. “Uh.. yeah.. thanks.” She stammered, looking anywhere but Avril.
Avril knew she was hot. And she knew Hayley was hot. Two hot girls. One… unlabeled, and one lesbian.
“Hey,” Avril said, smiling. “You gotta look at me.”
Hayley did, and once she did, Avril leaned in close.
It was now or never. “Do you wanna go on a date with me? Tomorrow? Pizza shop downtown?” Avril asked, blunt as ever.
Hayley blinked once. Then she blinked again, her eyes glossed in processing. “Yes!” She chirped. “That would be great.” She was blushing red again.
It was pouring down rain. Avril was done with her slushy by now. Hayley wasn’t.
“This is my house.” Hayley said, stopping in front of a nice, modern home.
“How was your slushee?” Avril smirked.
“Good?” Hayley said, her thin eyebrows furrowed.
“Can I try it?”
“Sure!”
So, in the dripping rain, Avril put both hands on Haley’s face and pulled her close, kissing her on the lips, before pulling away. Avril licked her lips. Hayley was starstruck.
“See ya tommorow, firebird.” Avril said, hopping on her skateboard.
Hayley stood in the rain, watching as that beautiful girl skated away. She couldn’t wait for the next day.
