Work Text:
Valour and Daya were the town’s most well-known couple.
Holly always felt like winter was the harshest season to exist, and since it was winter, she went to seek warmth from the fireplace of her favorite couple’s residence.
No, not really, she just wanted to annoy them.
🍪🍪🍪🍪
The door to the couple’s apartment was, to her immense relief, opened by Daya. They stood in pajamas, layered by a hoodie.
“Hey!” she greeted them in an overly enthusiastic tone, “ain’t that my most favorite person in the whole damn universe,” she looped an arm around their shoulder and added in a hushed voice, “I’m so glad it’s you and not Ms. Valiant.”
“Yeah, she’s…um,” They removed Holly’s hand from their shoulder and moved a couple steps away, gesturing Holly to follow them inside, “She’s taking a bath. Come on in though, we made cookies earlier. You can have that with warm milk.”
Holly didn’t need to be told twice. She sprawled on the sofa in the living room as if it were her own and looked up at them. “Can I stay over tonight?” she asked, and that was enough to make Daya enthusiastic enough to ramble on for the next two hours.
Which is clearly an exaggeration, but the point must be made.
“Oh yeah. For sure, you can. We could bake-”
“Uh,” Holly interrupted, “Didn’t you already make cookies?”
“-and have a midnight snack-”
“Oh, jolly.”
“-and watch late night movies-”
“Yeah, I don’t think your wife is than fun. Valiant is boring as f-”
“Oh! And we could invite Nike too! Should we also invite Ettian?”
“Yeah no. I’ll stop you right there,” Holly valued her life too much for that, “Valiant is going to make sure she has all our heads on a platter if you do.”
“Ah… I mean, yeah,” Daya agreed, “she does love her peace and privacy.”
“Yes, she does. So let’s just, you know, let it be me only.”
“Lu,” a voice called from the next room, “I heard the bell ring. Is someone here?”
“Oh, fuck.” Holly cursed under her breath.
“Oh yeah. It’s… um,” because a certain someone kept mouthing pleas as they spoke, they weren’t sure what to say anymore so they went with whatever came into their mind, “it’s a surprise.”
Holly face palmed herself. That was the best you could come up with?
Valour walked out in pajamas, with a towel wrapped around her shoulders. She was momentarily stunned when she saw who had arrived, but the expression was quickly replaced with displeasure.
“Oh, hey Valiant.” Holly waved at her, "surprise?"
“Get out,” came Valour’s reply.
“Val, that’s not very nice,” Daya said and got up to kiss Valour’s forehead the way they did whenever they were filled with love for the woman, which, to Holly, was all the time.
“Yeah, um,” Holly took a cookie from the table and started munching on it, “I’m here to stay the night.”
“Why?”
“Why not?”
Poor Daya just kept looking back and forth between the two women.
Valour smirked. “So you’re here to willingly third wheel the entire night?”
“Essentially.”
“Nope. Get out.”
“Ouch.” Daya said in a voice so low only they themselves could hear it. Or, as the common folk say, they ‘uttered under their breath’. They were really having fun watching this fiasco.
“Yeah no. Daya said I can stay and they are so excited to have me. You and I both know their happiness comes first.”
Valour grimaced but didn’t argue. Instead, she turned to her spouse. “Tell her to get out.”
“No,” came Daya’s reply. They were trying real hard to fight a smile.
“Lu, Please.”
“I don’t go back on my words. I did say she could stay.”
Valour huffed but didn’t say anything after.
Holly had known from the moment she had decided to crash the couple’s night that she only needed to convince Daya. Valour’s decision really didn’t matter when Daya voiced theirs. At least, not if it wasn’t something serious such as the end of the world but in what universe would that happen?
Valour sat opposite to Holly and said, “I still don’t want you here.”
Holly dramatically clutched her heart. “Oh, Valour,” she began, “I approached your abode to seek refuge from the harsh winds of winter. Who would have known your words would be harsher?”
“Oh, wow, you are so poetic.” Daya said with exaggerated awe.
“Oh wow, you are so dramatic.” Valour said with exaggerated sarcasm.
“Thank you. I know. I’m awesome.”
“So,” Daya tried to lead the night to somewhere, “cookies, anyone?”
They all ate cookies.
The cookies were yummy.
Valour was no longer grumpy.
🍪🍪🍪🍪
After much insistence from Daya, they all agreed to watch a movie. Valour agreed only if she got to pick the movie.
To Holly’s dismay, the asshole chose Interstellar. Interstellar.
Ugh.
As soon as the movie credits rolled up, Holly’s eyes sparked up the way they did whenever she was up to no good.
Yeah so apparently, she was up to no good.
“Hey, Vaya,” she called.
“It’s Daya,” Valour corrected with irritation. This woman was getting on her last nerves.
“Oh no, I was referring to both of you. You know, Valour plus Daya. Vaya. It’s your ship name.”
Valour rolled her eyes while Daya had a thoughtful expression on their face. “I low key like it,” they said.
It took everything inside Holly to stop her from cackling like a maniac and continuing the next step of her plan, “Oh, and did you know that apparently, ship names are supposed to start from the order of whoever is the top and then the bottom.”
Well, that was completely out of pocket. Needless to say, it left the couple stunned. Stunned is still an understatement.
“So,” Holly continued, completely aware of but not caring about the pair of eyes on her, “Is Vaya perfect or do I need to change it to Daylour?”
She got a whack on the head- that was Valour.
She also got a whack on the shoulder- that was Daya. “Shut up,” they said, blushing.
“Fuck you,” Valour said, also subtly blushing.
Holly grinned and got up from the sofa. “Alright, sorry, I’m sorry,” she went up to and settled by the fireplace, “so… a game of chess by the fire, anyone? Valiant, you up for a challenge?”
🍪🍪🍪🍪
You didn’t really need to, as Holly soon figured, ignite drama between those two for entertainment.
Not necessarily.
Valour, after putting Holly in a really difficult position, suddenly left and asked Daya to take over.
And where did she go?
Eh, Zeus knew where she went.
“Where did Valiant go?” Holly asked.
Daya shrugged and moved a horse to D5. “I don’t know,” they said, “but she left me here to win and I am going to win.”
“Oh, come on.”
After Kronos knows how long, Valour came back and stood over Daya, who was still sitting. She stood there, and… just stood there.
“Uh, what happened?” Holly asked which prompted Daya to look up too.
“Hi,” they said, “you want to come take over the game?”
“Remove your hoodie,” said Valour.
Daya clutched their hoodie. Holly pushed the chess board aside and comfortably lay down where she was sitting. This was going to be fun.
“Why? It’s cold.” Valour forcefully removed it from them.
“It’s not that cold,” she said, putting on the hoodie.
“Then why are you wearing it now?” They asked, clearly annoyed, “give it back.”
“It’s cold for me, not you.”
“It’s cold for me too! Dammit!”
The background was filled with Holly’s cackles. She was having a bit too much fun. This was way better than ‘Interstellar’ anyway.
🍪🍪🍪🍪
Any neighbor who had heard the commotion knew Valour got the hoodie in the end. She looked at her partner with adoration in her eyes as she enveloped in the hoodie that was a bit too large on her.
Daya gave an exasperated sigh and looked at Holly. “See, this is the kind of shit I have to deal with every day.”
Holly smiled and looked out the nearby window. This smile was out of the pure happiness she felt for her friends. “You love it though,” she said.
Valour and Daya were indeed the town’s most well-known couple.
