The King's Night to Remember

Summary:

Caesar goes to Lumina square for a romantic night with her beloved proxy, Wise. With a night full of chatter, laughter, gifts and memories ahead of them, Caesar does her best to show her affection despite her usual mannerisms. What she doesn't know is what Wise had in store for her as well, could it all be too good to be true? Well, romance is very unpredictable.

Work Text:

A warm late afternoon shone over all of Lumina Square as a nicely dressed woman sat at a table right outside of the Coff Cafe. She was beautiful with mid-length pale green hair, and a fit hourglass figure complimented by a comfortable black silk slit dress that exposed one of her legs as she sat down. She seemed lost in thought as multiple people passing by her couldn’t help but glance in her direction. “ Hmm, all these people keep staring at me… ” She thought to herself as she looked down at her dress. “ Guess Lucy was right in thinking this dress looks lavish… or do I just look strange to these people ?” She then grew a faint blush as she thought deeper.

As she was thinking, a familiar male voice caught her attention. “Oh, Caesar! Sorry I’m late…” As he said this, she jumped slightly before turning to her right to see Wise standing there, dressed in a white polo and khaki pants with dress shoes. They stared at each other for a moment before Caesar spoke up. “Oh hey Wise! Glad you could make it…” She said with an awkward smile before continuing. “Y-you look different. Y’know if I didn’t recognize your voice then I’d think you’re a totally different person… or something!” She said with a nervous chuckle. “I could say the same about you, I didn’t think you’d be the type to wear a dress~” He said with a joking smile before sticking out his hand. “Let’s get our orders in, we have a lot on our plates huh?”

Caesar quickly nodded before taking his hand and walking into the cafe with Wise. As they received their orders of coffee and pineapple buns, Wise began to break the ice more. “Y’know, I hope Belle doesn’t find us here… I wouldn’t hear the end of it, she already started chuckling when I left in this…” He said with a small laugh as Caesar smiled at him. “Oh, I get that… I remember telling the others about my plans for tonight…” She said as she drank her coffee. “Lucy at least helped me pick this out… after she was done laughing like a hyena…” She awkwardly giggled before looking back up to Wise as he spoke. “Well, going through all that was worth it. Because it’s great to see you looking like a princess~” Caesar blushed at his comment before speaking up again. “At least you think I look great, so that’s all that matters~” She then warmly smiled at him as they continued chatting about recent events, spending what felt like hours to Caesar as Wise looked into her eyes.

After finishing their coffee, they walked away from the cafe as they roamed Lumina Square. As they strolled down the streets, they stopped by various stores and ogled the contents inside them, observing the aged decorations of the antique store or admiring different types of flowers at Dew Gardening. Eventually stopping by San-Z’s studio and browsing the peculiar collectibles in stock, with Caesar eyeing a model pickup truck with an abstract color scheme. As she bought the collectible, she noticed Wise pick up and buy another statue he kept from her sight.

As they walked out of the store, Wise handed her the bag he held with his purchase and she couldn’t help but blush before handing him the model truck. “Seems we both had a similar idea, huh..?” She said with a nervous giggle before opening the bag he handed her and looked inside.

Inside, Caesar found a model bangboo statue that was a pastel pink color. Her face flushed a bit more as Wise spoke up again. “I’m guessing you like it, huh?” He said with a soft smile as Caesar looked at him again. She then gently moved to hold his hand as they began to walk through the pedestrian area once more.

During their walk, Wise led Caesar down the sidewalk towards a small store she couldn’t recognize. Walking inside, she realized it was a small jewelry store as multiple beautiful pieces gleamed in the bright lights inside the store. “Go on, look around, Caesar.” Wise said as Caesar stared in awe. “Fairy showed me this was a new store, highly rated too…” He chuckled as Caesar quietly walked through the store, ogling at all the displays, keeping note of every earring, bracelet, necklace and ring she could see.

As she peered into the display case with various rings, she saw some made from various materials such as emeralds, sapphires, topaz, rubies, and especially diamonds. Her eyes scanned over about a dozen different looking bands adorned with diamonds, until she found something that caught her interest. It was a shining ring with a band that resembled two intertwining threads with a sizable, flawless diamond; as she gazed at it, she read a label next to it in the case: “To plan to tie the knot with someone special!” She was captivated by the ring’s beauty, but grew embarrassed at the thought of it. “There’s no way we’d come this way for that…

It’s all a dream these days I suppose.” Caesar thought to herself as she got lost in her own daydreams in regards to the ring’s purpose.

While she was in thought, Wise’s voice cut through as he called out to her. “Hey Caesar, come look at this.” He called out to her, snapping her back to reality. “O-oh! What’s up, Wise?” She somewhat stammered in embarrassment as she walked up to him. She was shaking off her fantasies as one of the store’s staff came with a small box that had a neat white bow on it. When Wise received the box, he took Caesar back outside before speaking again. “Nice store huh? There are a lot of good accessories there, some things are expensive but I’m sure they’re all worth it.” Caesar then nodded to him as they stood by the store still. “Exactly, there’s so many good pieces in there! I’m sure Lucy would love this place, so many rings and bracelets… this could make some girl feel like a princess!” She then began to daydream again before Wise handed her the small box.

“Oh, so this is for me? But Wise you shouldn’t…” She said before looking up at Wise again and seeing his soft smile. “You know I had to get you something, Caesar. It’s everything an Overlord would want I’m sure… or even a princess.” He said with a warm tone as Caesar held the box close to her heart for a moment before beginning to unwrap the bow and open it. Upon opening it, her eyes widened as she saw a beautiful necklace with a silver chain and a nicely sized opal adorning it. As she opened it, tears began to form in her eyes as she held the beautiful accessory in her hand and Wise gently grasped it as well. “You like it, right? Glad you do.” He said as he helped her put it on. The beautiful opal perfectly stood out from her black dress in the early evening light.

Caesar held back the tears that began to form before reaching out and hugging him. Her hands shook from pure joy as she held onto him almost too tightly. “I… I love it… thank you…” She said between sniffles as they held the embrace for a few seconds. As she began to pull back, Caesar gulped quietly before placing her lips on Wise’s cheek and kissing it. As his eyes widened slightly, Caesar could notice a small blush forming on his face as he awkwardly chuckled. “You’re welcome… it’s the best fitting gift I can get for you.” He said before getting a notification on his phone.

“Oh, Belle’s messaging me. Just jokingly making sure I wasn’t stood up or anything like that.” He said as he typed out his response to his sister. After sending the message, Wise could feel Caesar’s prosthetic arm wrap around his right arm and pulled herself gently next to him as she looked into his eyes. “Then why not take a picture? I’m sure Belle would be so happy for you! Besides, I’m sure the girls back at Blazewood would also wanna see some pictures…” She said with a small laugh before trailing off as Wise turned on the phone’s camera. As they posed and smiled together and took the photo, Caesar couldn’t help but keep smiling as she saw the picture before it was sent to Belle.

“Wow, Wise… we really look like a couple here. I wonder if Belle could even recognize me in such a dress…” She said jokingly before Wise put his phone away and still held her close as their arms were still locked together. “Well, any couple would look like one on camera. But it’s nice in real time as well… Now come on, I booked us a couple tickets to watch ‘The Outdoor Cinema’ at the theater. We don’t wanna miss it now do we?~” He said with a grin before walking with Caesar in this close fashion as they made their way to Gravity Theater.

Inside of the cinema, they walked up to the booth to redeem their reserved tickets. As they did so, the lady at the booth smiled before talking in a cheery voice. “Oh wow, didn’t think this was for a more special occasion! If you’d like, I can apply our current twenty five percent couples discount deal to your order. Perfect for watching a nice romantic film with your date here~” As she said this, Caesar blushed as she noticed some other movie goers looking their way as she began to stammer. “U-uh, you really don’t have t-“

“Of course, that’d be wonderful! We’ll do that~” Wise said to the lady, much to Caesar’s embarrassment. After hearing the answer, the young lady smiled before applying the discount and telling them what theater the film was playing in. “Now, enjoy the film you two~” She said with a wink at Caesar as they walked towards the correct theater. As they continued to walk side by side, Caesar giggled awkwardly before speaking up. “You really didn’t have to do that y’know, all those people were staring and everything…” She said, smiling despite her embarrassed tone. “ After all, you don’t see someone dressed like this just waltzing through places like this. What if they think I’m his wife or something? ” She thought to herself as they made their way into the theater and sat together at one of the paired seats.

As the movie began, Caesar could feel Wise being quite close as they sat next to each other. In this proximity, her right hand clenched somewhat trying to fight the urge to hold his as the movie played before them. As they watched the film, time began to feel slower as the romantic scenes played out on screen and she imagined herself and Wise in similar situations. As the plot progressed, she could feel Wise gently place his hand on top of hers and intertwine his fingers with hers as he gently got closer. Caesar felt her face heat up as they continued to watch the movie together, when the two protagonists finally kissed, she gently looked to Wise to notice him looking towards her as well. “Sometimes watching movies like this reminds you of how special things are. Don’t you agree?” He said gently as Caesar smiled warmly at him. “You’re right, Wise. It reminds me how I have you…” She said softly before he suddenly leaned forward to her and gently planted his lips onto hers.

Time seemed to go even slower as they kissed, wanting to savor the moment forever. Caesar leaned into the kiss as those couple seconds turned into a few before she finally pulled back. “He finally kissed me, this feels just like all those comics I read… Wise~” She dreamily thought as the credits rolled before them and she began to breathe heavily before the lights in the theater came on. “That was quite the film huh? I enjoyed watching it with you, maybe this should be a frequent option at the store once we can get a few tapes in stock.” He said before turning to his date again. “Did you enjoy it too, Caesar?~” Caesar took a deep breath before trying her best to speak up through her flooded thoughts. “Y-yeah, it was a real heart-warmer for sure. So what else did you have in store for tonight, Wise?” She asked as she remained fixated onto him and slightly tightened her grip onto his hand as she was enveloped in his loving presence.

As they left the theater, it was nighttime while they walked hand in hand through the pedestrian area once more. Caesar could feel the cool breeze of the night wind as Wise led her towards the hot pot restaurant for dinner. Inside, more laughter and loving words were shared amongst them along with the mountains of food they boiled and shared together.

Afterwards they continued towards Wise’s car before getting inside and beginning to drive out through Lumina Square. Throughout the drive, Caesar sat in the passenger seat and snuck glances at Wise before eventually moving to hold his hand again while he drove. “I wonder where he’s taking me… oh it must be another surprise of some kind. Oh Wise, such a way with a lady~” She thought as she closed her eyes and dreamt of the possibilities as they drove towards Port Elpis.

When the car eventually stopped, Wise opened the door for Caesar to let her walk out of the car as she looked around. “Wow, you really do have interesting places to take a lady. You really are something else, Wise~” She said with a cheery smile as she looked out to the sea, noticing the moonlight against the rippling waves among the sea around the silhouettes of large cargo ships near the horizon. Wise then held her hand again before gesturing to the lighthouse. “I know how we can get a better view of things from here. Let’s go…” He said with a warm smile before walking her through the boardwalk and towards the lighthouse. After climbing up the spiraling stair up to the top of the lighthouse, they stood against the railing as they peered off to the ocean, entranced by the view of the waves and ships in the moonlight once more at the higher angle.

“Wow… Wise, this view is real pretty…” Caesar said softly as they enjoyed the view from atop the lighthouse. Wise then quietly chuckled before responding to her. “Well, it’s certainly not as pretty as you…” He said which caused a laugh to come from Caesar in response. After laughing for a second, she began to speak up loudly. “Oh c’mon Wise, that’s probably the cheesiest thing I’ve heard you say!” She laughed again to herself before noticing Wise wasn’t responding. “Wise? Oh alright, it was quite swee…” She said before trailing off as she turned her head to her right to see Wise, however he was now on one knee as he looked her in the eye.

“Wise… what’re you…” She said quietly before trailing off, unable to find the words to say before Wise spoke up to her. “Caesar, we’ve known each other for quite a while… from your rise to Overlord to even now.” He said with the same warm and romantic tone from earlier. “And I figured, if we worked this well together all the time… I’d never be happier…” He said before pulling out a small box from his pocket and opening it. Inside, Caesar saw a beautiful diamond ring, the exact same one she looked over back at the jewelry store before she got the necklace. The same intertwining band and beautiful diamond and everything she ogled and dreamt mere hours ago.

“W-Wise…” Caesar stammered before cutting herself off, her eyes tearing up with surprise and joy. Before she could say anything more, Wise spoke up again. “Caesar King, will you marry me?” He said with a heavy but earnest tone as Caesar finally cried in front of him. “W-Wise… I-I…” She could hardly speak between sobs before she finally gulped and shakily spoke. “Yes… yes Wise, yes!” She loudly declared as her tears still fell and she smiled before Wise gently held her prosthetic arm and slid the ring onto her ring finger. After he did so and stood up, she grasped him in a vice grip of a hug. As she cried tears of joy into him, he spoke again. “I’m glad, we’ll be partners til the end of time…” He said before kissing her once more to close the night as she blissfully closed her eyes.

Eventually, Caesar’s eyes opened as she found herself in her room again. As she shook off her drowsiness, a loud voice came from outside. “Caesar! You can’t sleep all day! Haven’t heard from either you or Burnice today!” She heard Lucy yelling for her to wake up, causing Caesar to remember the wild party they had the night before, and that unfortunately she just dreamt up her night with Wise.

“Sorry Lucy, just felt tired after that party… I’ll get up.” She said disappointedly as she got up and began to get dressed, then heard Lucy again. “Alright then, let me know when you’re done so we can look for that damn fuel head!” She yelled as Caesar began to get her clothes. After she finally got dressed for the afternoon, she noticed the manga she accidentally still had on her bed when she slept. Picking it up, she smiled as she read the cover: “The Princess and The Proxy”, remembering how it ended. “One day…” She muttered to herself. “One day I’ll make it real…” She blushed before leaving the book on her bed and walking out of her room for another day in the Outer Ring.
