Work Text:
Her nails dug into his skin. They were pointy, sharp - hadn’t drawn blood yet, but he wouldn’t be surprised if they would soon.
He glanced down. Her knuckles had turned white from how hard her grip was on his wrist.
“Darling, did you forget what I told you?” She asked, her voice melodic and yet to him it felt like nails on a chalkboard.
“Of course, I didn’t forget, Misa,” he said, not facing her. “But I told you that it’s necessary. You know I only love you.”
She pulled down slightly, scratching his skin. “You belong to me.” He winced.
He pulled his arm away. “It’s necessary to create our new world.”
She stood up suddenly - the chair fell over, but she didn’t care. “I don’t want you to date other girls- I won’t let you.” There were tears in the corners of her eyes. Her voice was high pitched.
“It won’t be real,” he said, truthfully. It would be just as fake as his relationship with Misa was. “You understand, I must prevent suspicions from arising.”
“You belong to me- I own you.” …is what Light was sure Misa wanted to say. She didn’t, though. She just looked at him - or through him, it was hard to tell the difference.
Her eyes flickered above his head, clearly reminding herself why he mattered. There was a flicker of something in her eyes; trauma, anger, sadness, jealousy - whatever it was, they looked haunted. Fittingly so.
Light despised her. She was nothing more than a disgusting serial killer to him. Her eyes and loyalty were useful, yes - but he couldn’t wait for the day he wouldn’t need her anymore.
Imagining her dead brought him great pleasure. He felt hatred very often, but the magnitude at which he felt it towards her was impressive even to him.
Misa’s expression changed, it seemed more controlled suddenly. She was an actress, after all. “One day- I will kill her, you know?” Her voice was chillingly casual, as if she spoke of what movie to watch next or what food to order.
Light rolled his eyes. He did not care about Kiyomi either. He tolerated her and he imagines in some other life, he could’ve even liked her - but here? Now? He had no reason to care. Kiyomi was the same as Misa and Teru. A pawn. Nothing more. At most, she was a more convenient pawn - useful, easier to control.
Misa had forgotten her place, Light thought to himself.
”I’ll make it up to you,” he lied. He had no intention to do any such thing, but he needed to keep Misa in check. “A nice date night, when all of this is over, hm? How about that?”
Misa shifted her weight from one leg to the other. “I’ll take more than that,” she said, almost like a warning. Light looked up at her - a rare thing, since he was taller.
“Do what you wish, so long as no one has to know.” His voice was distant, but Misa heard what she wanted to.
”I will! And you’ll see- I can be of use to you more than anyone else! You only need me!” She grabbed both of his hands in hers. “Promise you’ll marry me when this is all over?”
He knew she’d accept no other answer than a yes. “Shouldn’t I be the one to propose?” He avoided the question.
”You’re gonna propose?!” She tightened her grip. “I’ve won- I have!!” Her eyes looked crazed. Light broke the eye contact.
”I will, so long as you’re useful. I will kill you the moment I don’t need you anymore.” He reminded her. He let her have her fun, now he needed to make sure he still got side of the bargain.
She immediately jumped to agree. “I’m yours, Light. Use me however you need, I will be your eyes.”
